Abstract

The quality of life for those with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus can be affected by this chronic metabolic illness. Coping strategies are one aspect of mental health that affects life satisfaction. The purpose of this research was to look at how people living in Nyomplong Village, which is part of the UPTD Puskesmas Pabuaran working area in Sukabumi City, deal with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and how it affects their quality of life. This study used a cross-sectional design with quantitative correlations. Using a total  sampling technique, 82 respondents were selected from a group of 85 patients. The data was collected by using the Diabetes Quality of Life (DQOL) questionnaire to evaluate quality of life and the Brief COPE Inventory to examine coping methods. The data was analyzed using a 5% significance threshold and the Chi-square test in conjunction with the contingency coefficient. The majority of respondents reported low quality of life (53.7%), and (58.5%) used maladaptive coping techniques. A good correlation (CC = 0.542) and a significant connection (p < 0.001) were seen between coping techniques and quality of life. Patients' quality of life is substantially correlated with their coping techniques in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. If we want to improve patients' quality of life, we must improve their adaptive coping mechanisms.

Abstract

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major global health problem, and many patients with end-stage kidney disease require maintenance hemodialysis. Although life-sustaining, hemodialysis is associated with persistent symptoms, psychosocial distress, and lifestyle restrictions that reduce health-related quality of life (HRQoL), particularly in resource-limited settings. Empowerment-oriented self-care education may strengthen patients’ ability to manage dialysis-related demands and improve HRQoL, yet evidence from district-level services remains limited. Objective: To evaluate the effect of an empowerment-oriented self-care education program on HRQoL among patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis. Methods: A quasi-experimental, two-arm pretest–posttest study with a control group was conducted in 2022 in a public district hospital hemodialysis unit in Sukabumi, West Java, Indonesia. Eligible adults receiving maintenance hemodialysis were recruited using consecutive sampling and allocated to either an intervention group (empowerment-oriented self-care education) or a usual-care control group. The intervention consisted of structured nurse-led self-care education integrated into routine dialysis visits and focused on guided problem-solving, collaborative goal setting, self-management skills, and coping strategies related to dialysis care. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was assessed at baseline and after completion of the intervention using the Kidney Disease Quality of Life 36-item survey (KDQOL-36). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariable linear mixed-effects models to estimate group, time, and group × time effects, adjusting for baseline covariates. Results: Of 68 screened patients, 62 were enrolled and 58 completed primary analyses. Compared with usual care, the intervention group showed greater improvements in Burden of Kidney Disease, Symptoms/Problems, Effects of Kidney Disease, and SF-12 physical and mental components. Conclusion: Empowerment-oriented self-care education was associated with meaningful improvements in HRQoL among hemodialysis patients in a resource-limited setting. Integrating structured empowerment-based self-care education into routine hemodialysis nursing practice may help reduce perceived disease burden and improve patient well-being

Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension is highly prevalent among older adults and often remains inadequately controlled despite pharmacological treatment, particularly in community and primary care settings. Low-cost, non-pharmacological interventions that support long-term self-management are increasingly recommended. Slow deep breathing, a mind–body intervention targeting autonomic regulation, has shown potential to reduce blood pressure, but longitudinal evidence among older adults remains limited. Objective: This study aimed to examine the longitudinal association between a structured slow deep breathing intervention and changes in blood pressure and quality of life among older adults with hypertension. Methods: A longitudinal repeated-measures quasi-experimental study with a comparison group was conducted among community-dwelling adults aged ≥60 years with hypertension. Participants were allocated to either a slow deep breathing intervention group or a standard hypertension education group using a non-random allocation approach. The intervention consisted of guided slow deep breathing practiced daily for four weeks. Blood pressure and quality of life (WHOQOL-OLD) were assessed at baseline, week 4, and week 8. Linear mixed-effects models were used to evaluate group-by-time interactions while adjusting for baseline values and antihypertensive medication use. Results: Sixty-eight participants completed the study (intervention n = 34; comparison n = 34). Compared with the comparison group, the intervention group showed greater reductions in systolic (β = −6.82, 95% CI −10.23 to −3.41, p .001) and diastolic blood pressure (β = −3.94, 95% CI −6.31 to −1.57, p = .002), along with greater improvements in quality of life (β = 3.26, 95% CI 1.54–4.98, p .001)..Conclusion: Participation in structured slow deep breathing was associated with improved blood pressure control and quality of life. Further randomized studies are needed to confirm effectiveness and causal relationships.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a non-communicable disease that requires long-term management. Effective hypertension control involves not only pharmacological treatment but also self-care management practices, including medication adherence, physical activity, dietary regulation, blood pressure monitoring, and stress management. Family support is considered an important factor that may influence patients’ ability to perform self-care behaviors. Purpose: To determine the relationship between family support and self-care management among patients with hypertension. Method: A quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of patients with hypertension at the Baros Public Health Center, Sukabumi. A total sampling technique was applied, involving 86 respondents. Data were collected using questionnaires measuring family support and self-care management. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman’s rho correlation test. Results: The majority of respondents received good family support (n=69; 80.2%) and demonstrated good self-care management (n=64; 74.4%). The Spearman’s rho correlation test showed a statistically significant relationship between family support and self-care management among patients with hypertension (p < 0.001; r = 0.878). Conclusion: Family support is significantly associated with self-care management among patients with hypertension. Strengthening family involvement through health education and hypertension management programs may support patients in improving self-care practices and maintaining better disease control.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) patients living in disaster-prone areas may experience interconnected food, nutritional, socioeconomic, and healthcare vulnerabilities that can be exacerbated by disasters. However, an instrument that comprehensively assesses food and nutrition vulnerability in this population remains limited. This study aimed to develop and validate the multidimensional Food Security-Nutrition Vulnerability (FOSENUVU) instrument for assessing food and nutrition vulnerability among TB patients living in disaster-prone areas. A methodological study was conducted through sequential instrument development and psychometric validation. Initial item development involved a literature review, healthcare worker interviews, item construction, and expert assessment. Content validity was evaluated by five experts using the Content Validity Index. The resulting 30-item instrument was administered to 300 adult pulmonary TB patients living in disaster-prone areas of Sukabumi Regency, Indonesia, selected using purposive sampling. Validity analysis was carried out in stages: content validity was assessed by five experts using the Content Validity Index (CVI), followed by item validity testing using corrected item-total correlation. Furthermore, construct validity was analysed using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), whilst convergent validity was assessed using Average Variance Extracted (AVE) and Composite Reliability (CR). Expert assessment demonstrated 90% agreement, supporting the content validity of the instrument. The 30-item FOSENUVU showed strong internal consistency, with Cronbach’s alpha of 0.979 overall and 0.872–0.894 across six conceptual domains. EFA identified a dominant single-factor structure explaining 60.5% of the total variance, with factor loadings ranging from 0.709 to 0.825. CFA confirmed the one-factor model with excellent fit (χ²/df=1.046, CFI=0.997, TLI=0.997, RMSEA=0.012, and SRMR=0.022). Convergent validity was supported by an AVE of 0.605 and composite reliability of 0.979. All 30 items were retained. FOSENUVU demonstrated strong content validity, internal consistency, structural validity, and convergent validity. The final 30-item instrument provides a multidimensional yet integrated measure of food and nutrition vulnerability among TB patients in disaster-prone areas.
