Abstract

Learning strategies encompass deliberate techniques and methods employed by individuals to optimize their acquisition and comprehension of information or skills. Among the categories of language learning strategies frequently utilized are memory, cognitive, compensatory, metacognitive, affective, and social strategies, all of which serve as valuable tools for enhancing language acquisition efficiency. Consequently, this study aims to assess the utilization level of language learning strategies, determining the extent to which students employ these strategies, and identifying the most and least utilized strategies in learning English. For data collection, this research adopted Oxford's Strategy Inventory Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire version 7.0. Employing quantitative descriptive methods, data were gathered from 42 Capiz National High School ESL students. The findings revealed a tendency among students to utilize strategies in their English learning endeavors, with cognitive strategies being the most frequently employed and affective strategies being the least used. These results underscore the importance for ESL teachers to tailor teaching methods, materials, and activities to align with students' preferred strategies, thereby supporting language learning effectively. Additionally, future studies are recommended to utilize larger and more diverse samples to further explore the relationships between learning strategies and other variables in greater depth.

Abstract

Mathematics learning must be oriented towards achieving mathematical skills and shaping students' character. The nature of mathematics as the highest form of rationality, often results in the teacher's view that mathematics is only intended for cognitive development, but it is difficult to develop students' character. For this reason, the purpose of this research is to develop mathematics learning to improve students' cognitive abilities and character. This study uses an integrative literature review method by integrating ethnomathematical theory and project-based learning to build a theoretical framework for the Epsipo Learning Strategy (Ethnomathematics-Project-based Learning). The epsipo strategy is basically an effort that can be made to teach mathematics through a project with a cultural context. The project-based learning model has contributed to realizing meaningful mathematics learning, but it lacks value instillation. The ethnomathematics initiated by D'Ambrosio is rich in moral and social values. The two theories complement each other with their own advantages. Through the implementation of the Epsipo strategy, it is hoped that students will have the knowledge and ability to think mathematically and develop their character. It is hoped that through this strategy, mathematics learning is not only oriented towards achieving cognitive aspects but also to strengthen students' character.

Abstract

Learning motivation is one of the important factors that influence the success of the learning process, especially in Natural Science (IPA) subjects that require an in-depth understanding of concepts. This study aims to analyze the level of motivation to learn science in 5th-grade students at MIN 3 Lampung Utara. Learning motivation is measured based on four main indicators, namely Self-Efficacy (SE), Interest and Enjoyment (IE), Connection to Daily Life (CDL), and Cross-Cultural Interactions (CCI), which are adapted from Ginzburg & Barak's research (2023). Data were collected by distributing questionnaires directly to students, and the data were analyzed using the Rasch model. The results showed that the motivation to learn science at MIN 3 Lampung Utara was in the high category, with an average percentage of motivation of 71.67%. The results of the analysis using the Rasch model show person reliability of 0.78 and item reliability of 0.85, which indicates that the instrument used has good consistency in measuring science learning motivation. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis of the four indicators showed that overall student motivation was high. However, the Connection to Daily Life (CDL) indicator, which reflects students' ability to connect science material with daily life, showed the lowest score compared to other indicators. This finding has important implications for educators and curriculum developers to improve the relevance of science learning to students' daily lives. Therefore, further research is needed to explore the factors that influence the low connection between science materials and students' daily life contexts.
