Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui: 1) efektifitas teknik DBCIRC untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman membaca; 2) persepsi mahasiswa terhadap penerapan teknik DBCIRC. Peneliti menggunakan one class pre-test post-test design. Sampel penelitian terdiri atas 16 mahasiswa STKIP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi yang dipilih secara purposive. Dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan tiga instrumen yaitu test pemahaman membaca, angket dan pedoman wawancara. Data dianalisis secara kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Hasil analisis data menunjukan bahwa (p) value yang diperoleh dari perhitungan paired t-test adalah 0.000. Dapat dilihat bahwa (p) value (0.000) lebih kecil dari taraf signifikan (0.05). Artinya adalah Ho ditolak dan Ha diterima. Disamping itu, hasil angket dan wawancara menunjukan bahwa persepsi mahasiswa terhadap penerapan teknik DBCIRC adalah positif. Jadi dapat disimpulkan bahwa penerapan teknik DBCIRC sangat efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman mahasiswa dalam membaca.                                                                                         The aims of this study are to examine: 1)the effectiveness of DBCIRC technique to promote students’ reading comprehension achievement; 2) the students’ perception about the implementation of DBCIRC technique. This study employs one class-pre test post-test design. The sample consisted of 16 students of STKIP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi who were selected purposively. To gather the data, the researcher used reading comprehension test, questionaire and interview guideline. The data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results show that (p) value gotten from paired t-test was 0.000. It can be seen that (p) value (0.000) is less than significant level (0.05). In other words, H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Besides, the result of students’ questionaire and interview reveal that students’ perception about the implementation DBCIRC technique is positive. Therefore, it can be concluded that DBCIRC technique is effective to be used to promote students’ reading comprehension achievement.Keywords: digital media, CIRC technique, reading achievement, students’ perception.

Abstract

Listening skill in English is one of the most important skills in communication and educational process. However, listening skill is a skill that is not easily mastered by all non-native speaker students. The students need to know and understand the difficulties in listening process. Therefore, the current study aims to investigate the difficulties faced by the students dealing with listening comprehension. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with case study approach that examines six students in third semester of the English education study program in Universitas Muhammadiyah Kotabumi with three different proficiency levels: low, moderate, and high level. The results of this study showed that students with low level faced difficulties with unfamiliar words (message content), speed of speech (speaker), and lack of vocabulary (listener). Then in moderate level students felt difficult in the speed of speech (speaker) and noises (physical settings). Meanwhile, students with high level faced difficulty with the long spoken text (message content), variety of accents (speaker) and noises (physical settings). It can be concluded that the listening comprehension difficulties encountered by the students at tertiary level are different depending on their proficiency in English. Therefore, the implication of the current study is that the lecturer need to consider the information revealed in this study in order to be able to overcome the difficulties faced by the students.

Abstract

The current article attempts to elaborate on the students’ language learning motivation within the application of lesson study for the learning community at STKIP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi. This article is a descriptive-quantitative study involving 60 students of the English Education Study Program as the sample. A questionnaire to identify the language learning motivation is administered as the instrument of the research. The questionnaire is validated by experts and the reliability is tested using Cronbach Alpha formula. The data are analyzed descriptively. The findings show that the students’ language learning motivation within a lesson study framework tends to be instrumental orientation. Therefore, lesson study for a learning community is effective to be implemented at STKIP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi, especially for the students of the English Education Study Program.

Abstract

The current article attempts to develop teaching material for intermediate grammar in form of electronic book (e-book) which utilize epub format. E-book is assumed to be an interesting learning sources since it utilizes digital media, in which it is suitable with the students’ condition in digital era. This research was carried out by using Research and Development method. In developing e-book, several stages were conducted; pre-liminary research, prototyping phase, and assessment phase. From the assessment result, it was found that three experts in; material, language used and media declared that this e-book is appropriate to be used. Moreover, in term of students’ perception, it was revealed that from aspect relevance (4.0); consistency (3.8); practice (4.4); and effective (4.2) which hence it can be said that students have positive perception toward the use of this e-book.. Therefore, it can be concluded that generally this e-book is very good and recommended to be used in pre-intermediate grammar classroom.

Abstract

Penulisan artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan keterampilan membaca pemahaman mahasiswa setelah diberi treatmentpengajaran dalam bentuk metode pembelajaran Cooperative Integrated Readingand Composition (CIRC) terintegrasi media pembelajaran digital berbasis Sparkol Videoscribe. Artikel ini merupakan sebuah penelitian tindakan kelas (classroom action research) yang melibatkan mahasiswa semester III Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia Universitas Muhammadiyah Kotabumi sebagai sampel. Penelitian ini menggunakan siklus yang dikembangkan oleh Kemmis & McTaggart yang terdiri atas planning, action, observing, dan reflection. Setelah dilakukan tindakan selama dua siklus, hasil menunjukan bahwa ada peningkatan signifikan yang terjadi pada keterampilan membaca pemahaman mahasiswa. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa metode pembelajaran CIRC terintegrasi media pembelajaran digital dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan membaca pemahaman bagi mahasiswa.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate the listening strategies employed by the students at the tertiary level in EFL setting. The current study used descriptive approach which involved six students. They are the representative from the low, medium and high ability students. To achieve the objective of this research, the researchers used interview guideline as the instrument to collect the data. The findings showed that from those six strategies, there were only five strategies which are employed by the students; namely social startegy, cognitive strategy, compensation strategy, metacognitive strategy and affective strategy. From the result of this research, it can be concluded that memory strategy is not employed by the students.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the ways people communicate verbally. Important speaking skills, students must be able to speak English well. However, in reality students' communication in speaking class often faces problems. One of them is communication apprehension, communication apprehension is people who feel bad feelings in communicative situations. Therefore, it is important to do further research through research to find out whether actually facing communication fears can help to succeed in learning to speak. Based on these problems, researchers are interested in examining the types and factors that cause student communication in the speaking class. This study aims to describe the types and factors that cause communication anxiety experienced by students. This study uses a descriptive approach. This research involved 7 participants from speaking class at Muhammadiyah University of Kotabumi. Data collection was done through a questionnaire with a google form. The results showed that students experienced network communication in types of traits such as, situational and general context. In this case, the person-group is the missing type in this study. Then for the anxiety factor, students experience novelty, formality, subordinate status, ignorance, inequality, attention, heredity and environment. The missing factors of Communication Aprehension are strengthening and defeating.

Abstract

The main problem in this Community Service activity is the lack of motivation and movement of teachers in the school in presenting information technology-based materials that can support the distance learning process during a pandemic. As a result, students become less enthusiastic and less motivated to take part in learning because the teacher only gives assignments without any explanation so that students have difficulty doing them. Teachers should be able to use various learning media to convey material so that learning can be carried out smoothly. Weaknesses of SMP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi that the teachers lack updates regarding digital learning media so that in carrying out learning it is less attractive to students. From the problems described above, the community service team provides a solution to the problem by carrying out assistance in making interactive learning media based on the Sparkol Videoscribe application for teachers at SMP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi North Lampung. The purpose of this activity is to improve the skills of teachers in making sparkol videoscribe-based digital learning media, and it is hoped that the teachers will have skills in making digital learning media so that the distance learning process can be carried out properly.

Abstract

Listening considered as difficult skill and some problems often experienced by the students  which are understanding difficult and new words used by native speakers and connect the meaning into certain message, following the fast speed of speaking of native speakers, understanding different accents and pronunciation of native speakers. Referring to the problems which also experienced by the third semester students of English Education Department at Muhammadiyah Kotabumi university, the researchers conducted a research by applying Research and Development method. The researchers designed listening log-based book as learning source for the students. Forty students became the research subject and the researchers used test and interview to collect the data. The book completed with theories related to material in listening comprehension, some effective strategies to be applied in different listening material and some exercises. The book has been validated, revised and tried out to the students. Based on the result of book try out it was found that the book was effective to reduce learning barrier during listening comprehension course in the class.

Abstract

Learning style is one way to find out a person's most comfortable way in the learning process being carried out. In the learning process takes place, students have their learning style preferences. Learning styles have four preference models, namely VARK; visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic. The VARK can help students' learning style preferences in maximizing their learning style. Thus, the gap in this research is the investigation of learning styles in the English as a Second Language (ESL) context. The purposes of this study were to find out; (1) the learning styles employed by students and (2) the dominant learning style employed by the students in Sekolah Indonesia Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in learning English. This research used a descriptive quantitative research method that deals with the types of learning styles by VARK Neil Fleming. The total participants of the research were 28 students. The findings showed that (1) it was found that in the ESL context, students prefer to use two learning style preferences, namely; unimodal and bimodal, and (2) students predominantly used the kinesthetic learning style. The current findings implied that ESL teachers should provide English learning activities which is able to trigger students to engage directly in the process of teaching and learning in the classroom so that they can use their learning style maximally. Furthermore, the teaching process should emphasize on students—centered learning in order that students will be easier in reaching the objectives of Learning English in ESL context.
