Abstract

The training of rhetoric techniques in the sub-district of Balai Gadang Padang is aimed at improving the communication skills of the Islamic preachers or ‘juru dakwa’h in delivering their sermon or ‘khutbah’. With the improved skills, it is expected that their audience will receive and understand the messages delivered to them more easily. Rhetoric tehcnique or also known as ‘the art of speaking’ is a special skill used to speak in front of a larger audience whose purpose is not only to enable the listeners to understand the messages but more importantly to persuade them to agree with the opinions or statements shared by the ‘juru dakwah’. This ‘art of speaking’ is the most crucial to master since it can determine the success or failure of ‘a khutbah’. It also highlights the uniqueness of the preacher. Three rhetoric techniques were taught during this public service training namely; 1) monologue rhetoric involving only one speaker such as those found in speeches, sermons and declamation, 2) dialogical rhetoric involving two or more speakers like in discussion, conversation, debates, and colsultation and 3) speaking techniques coaching involving training to practice breathing, resonating, projecting, articulating and storytelling.

Abstract

In the last few years, there have been a large number of trainings or professional developments carried out to enhance teachers’competence in formulating HOTS-based-test items. These phenomena then seem to put aside the capability of designing and managing classroom activities to develop students’ higher order thinking skills (HOTS). In fact, the latter is essentially needed to prepare students with knowedge and skill to solve problems given in the test. In addition, it is likely unreasonable to administer a HOTS test to those who have never attended a HOTS class.  This article then is intended to describe how a training on designing HOTS – based learning module in Junior High Schools was carried out to help teachers to conduct a HOTS-based class. The training and coaching were given to 26 of 35 teachers under the auspices of English Teacher Association in Kota Padang Panjang. Prior to the program, those who were willing to take a part were required to fill in a form of commitment confirming that they have to fully join 36 hours of training and submit a HOTS-based learning module for one meeting at the end. The instructors invited to the program were those having specialties in curriculum design and pedagogical competence. The results of the program show that most of the teachers are able to create a HOTS-based learning module to support learning process after they get some feedbacks and guidance from the instructors.

Abstract

This study evaluates English textbooks used in Indonesian high schools to determine their alignment with curriculum standards and their effectiveness in supporting language acquisition. Using document analysis, textbooks were assessed based on key criteria, including aims and approaches, design and organization, language content, skills development, topics and cultural representation, and practical considerations. A Likert-scale rating (1–4) was applied to quantify evaluation results. The findings highlight strengths and weaknesses in locally produced textbooks compared to internationally published materials, emphasizing the need for improvements in cultural inclusivity, skills integration, and real-life applicability. The results provide valuable insights for educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers in selecting and enhancing English learning resources. Additionally, the study serves as a reference for future research on textbook evaluation, particularly in adapting global materials to local educational contexts. By identifying gaps and providing recommendations, this research contributes to the continuous development of high-quality textbooks that align with national and international standards, ultimately improving English language education in Indonesia.
