Abstract

Diabetes mellitus, known as diabetes or blood sugar disease, is a group of chronic diseases characterized by increased blood sugar level (hyperglycemia). Prolonged hyperglycemia conditions will cause an increase in ROS (Reactive Oxygen Spesies) production by the mitochondria, which then cause damage to the mitochondrial membrane resulting in loss of function of the mitochondrial membrane potential and can induce sperm cells apoptosis. This study aims to determine effect of kayu ular (Strychnos lucida) steeping on decreasing spermatozoa abnormalities of mice (Mus musculus) diabetes mellitus model. The result showed that administration of kayu ular steeping at concentration of 2,6gr/50ml was signicantly reduced (P<0.05) spermatozoa abnormality. This dose is the most effective concentration to decreased the spermatozoa abnormality of mice. This though to be due to the active compounds found in steeping kayu ular (Strychnos lucida) which can counteract free radicals due to diabetes mellitus that decreasing spermatozoa abnormalities.

Abstract

Abstract

Alang Asaode Village is one of the villages in West Seram Regency that has a large mangrove forest. Sonneratia caseolaris is one type of mangrove that has a fruit called pedada fruit. Pedada fruit has nutritional content that can be utilized into food products such as jam and syrup because of its high vitamin C content and can also be processed into antiseptic liquid soap. Community service activities in Alang Asaode village in the form of socialization of pedada fruit processing using the fermentation process into economically valuable products such as liquid soap to increase family income.

Abstract

Catharanthus roseus, a plant belonging to the Apocynaceae family, contains various chemical compounds. The roots, stems, leaves, and seeds of Catharanthus roseus contain over 70 types of alkaloids, including 28 bi-indole alkaloids found throughout the plant. These compounds, many of which are beneficial in medicine, exhibit blood sugar-lowering (hypoglycemic) properties. This study aims to evaluate the effects of pure methanol extracts of Catharanthus roseus leaves on diabetes mellitus in mice, providing comprehensive evidence of its efficacy. Methanol and petroleum benzene extracts of Catharanthus roseus leaves were diluted to a 5% concentration and administered to test animals at a dose of 1.5 ml. After a two-week testing period, the results showed a significant reduction in blood sugar levels in the diabetes mellitus model mice. This demonstrates the hypoglycemic effect of methanol and petroleum benzene extracts of Catharanthus roseus leaves in lowering blood glucose levels in streptozotocin-induced mice.

Abstract

Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houtt) is a native Indonesian spice, and its pulp is often discarded as waste after juice production. However, the residue still contains essential oils and active compounds such as flavonoids, phenols, and myristicin, which may benefit human health. This study aims to evaluate the potential of nutmeg pulp residue as a nutraceutical herbal tea through organoleptic testing, assessing aroma, taste, clarity, and color. The research employed a completely randomized design with three replications. Organoleptic and hedonic tests were carried out on 25 panelists using Friedman and Wilcoxon tests. Results showed that tea clarity scored highest in preference (3.72), followed by aroma (2.28), taste (2.18), and color (1.82). The nutmeg pulp tea was generally acceptable, although improvements in color and flavor intensity are needed. This innovation offers an ecological and economic solution for waste utilization, with potential for rural product diversification and health benefits.
