Abstract

The present study used adsorbents from Kepok banana peel to remove Fe (II) from an aqueous solution. The effect of adsorbent dose and initial metal concentration was investigated at room temperature to evaluate the maximum adsorption and adsorption capacity of Kepok banana peels. The adsorption parameters studied were adsorbent mass [0.5-2.5 g], and initial Fe (II) concentration [30-70 mg/L], where the operating conditions were 50 ml of Fe metal solution was added to each adsorbent, the pH value of the mixture was adjusted to 6. Then the mixture was stirred at 250 rpm for 30 minutes. In the adsorption process, it was found that 2.5 grams of mass adsorbent and 60 mg/L as initial metal concentration gave the highest adsorption and adsorption capacity, with 57.99% and 0.644 mg/g, respectively. FTIR spectra of adsorbent showed hydroxyl, carboxylic, and amine groups in Kepok banana peels. This study showed that Kepok banana peels had good potential for removing Fe (II) ions and could be used as a good adsorbent for removing the Fe (II) from water and wastewater at very little concentration.

Abstract

The rise of media coverage regarding the production of illegal and dangerous cosmetics is one proof that the use of cosmetics is currently a necessity. Online marketing is one of the facilities for spreading these illegal cosmetics. Thus, it is necessary to educate the public, especially social media users who are generally in productive age range, to be more careful in choosing safe cosmetics. In this community service activity, education was carried out to 17 participants from senior high school student. The method used includes the presentation by the presenter as well as discussion and question and answer. To measure the increase in knowledge, pre-test and post-test were carried out. It was found that 64.7% experienced an increase in knowledge after this activity was held.

Abstract

Contamination in aquatic systems has an indirect impact on survival. One type of contamination of the aquatic system is the presence of heavy metal contamination. Continuous exposure to heavy metals can cause kidney, liver, neurological disease, vascular disease, and cancer. Sources of heavy metals come from the mining industry, paint industry, use of pesticides, etc. To provide insight to the public, it is necessary to conduct education about the sources of heavy metal contamination and its impact on the body. The implementation of this community service activity is in the form of webinars for active students. A total of 63 students participated in this educational activity. The selection of students as the target community is based on their role in society. The methods used in this activity include presentations by lecturers and students, as well as discussions and questions and answers. To measure knowledge, pre-test and post-test were conducted.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a degenerative disease indicated by increased blood sugar levels. This disease can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, one of which is by consuming foods high in fiber and having a low glycemic index. Porang tubers are a high-fiber food with a low glycemic index. However, porang tubers cannot be consumed directly because of the high content of calcium oxalate, so it is advisable to consume porang tubers in processed forms such as porang rice, shirataki, porang pudding. This activity aims to provide information to the public about the benefits of porang tubers and their preparations for health, especially for someone with diabetes mellitus

Abstract

In this study, orange peel was used as an adsorbent to determine the adsorption properties of lead metal. The orange peel used in this study came from waste generated by a fruit juice shop. The mass variation of the adsorbent was studied to determine its effect on the adsorption of lead metal. Mass variations used include 0.25-1.5 gram. The operating conditions used in this study included the preparation of 50 mL of 50 mg/L Lead solution, the pH of the mixture was adjusted to pH 4, the stirring speed was 100 rpm for 180 minutes and at 25℃. The results showed that the highest % adsorption was achieved at an adsorbent mass of 0.75 grams, which was 92.9% (2.5 mg/g), while the highest adsorption capacity was obtained at the use of an adsorbent mass of 0.25 grams (7.27 mg/g). Both the decrease in % adsorption and adsorption capacity that occurred in the use of the mass variation of the adsorbent were mostly caused by the aggregation process.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the level of lead concentration in eyeliner cosmetics in Surabaya city. Eyeliner is one of the cosmetics that is applied to the eye line, therefore the ingredients contained in it must be safe. Cosmetic eyeliner totaled 6 samples with different trademarks were collected by purposive sampling method. The cosmetic eyeliner samples were digested wet with aqua regia and heavy metal analysis of lead was performed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) at a wavelength of 283.3 nm. BPOM of Indonesian Republic decides the limit of heavy metals allowed in cosmetics is 20 mg/kg. All samples in this study were found to contain lead metal exceeding the specified limits. The highest lead levels were found in sample E, which was 180.1188 ppm. The results show that cosmetic eyeliner products are exposed to dangerous heavy metals and may have a risk to the health of users because metals can accumulate in the body.

Abstract

Continuous use of cooking oil at high temperatures produces oil that is no longer suitable for help because it is not good for the body’s health. So that waste cooking oil can be reused, it needs to be processed to improve its quality by utilizing waste to increase its benefits. Raja Nangka, one of the banana types, is commonly used as raw material for making fried bananas, resulting in abundant banana peel waste. Therefore, this research aims to utilize Raja Nangka peel waste to rejuvenate waste cooking oil. Raja Nangka banana peel was cut into small pieces, dried, sifted, and then activated using KOH to increase its surface area so that its adsorption capacity increases. The results showed that the greater the adsorbent mass and the longer the adsorption time, the greater the ability to reduce the acid number and peroxide value in waste cooking oil. An adsorbent mass of 10 grams and a soaking time of 150 minutes were the best results for reducing the acid number and peroxide value.

Abstract

Significant temperature changes make the body unable to adjust properly, which eventually leads to disease, affects the immune system, and increases the risk of developing viruses and bacteria. Empowerment of family medicinal plants in the cultivation and utilization of TOGA can be a way to overcome these problems, especially in the city of Surabaya. The purpose of this community service is to increase public understanding of the efficacy of TOGA and to create facilities for nature conservation, especially the cultivation of TOGA greenery. The form of community service activities is providing education, giving and planting TOGA, and monitoring TOGA maintenance. The resulting output is increasing public understanding of the efficacy of TOGA and creating facilities for nature conservation, especially cultivating reforestation for special TOGA gardens (Kencur, turmeric, temulawak, and binahong) so that they can help realize preventive and promotional communities in overcoming disease problems that often arise during the transition season.
