Abstract

The effect of globalization in all sectors of life will impact on the moral degradation of the Indonesian students. It is due to the fact that it is easy for students to imitate cultural behaviors from other countries through social media that are difficult to be controlled by parents and teachers. School children who are still immature in mind may easily adopt the fast spread of information from different parts of the world regardless of whether or not they are appropriate with the Indonesian culture. Culturally, what is considered good behaviors in one country may not be accepted in other countries or vice versa. Therefore, the inclusion of moral education (character education) in Indonesia is crucial to avoid students’ misconception of moral values and to direct students’ behaviors in appropriate ways.

Peace value is a key to instill learners with good characters. Peace education can readily be integrated into values education as a part of subject through textbook since textbook is mostly used material and every aspect of the textbook has the potential to promote the values. Aiming to explore explicit and implicit messages about peace values in English Textbook for Tenth-Grade Senior High School Students, this study reviews the images of the textbook by revealing the embedded peace values. Critical discourse analysis was conducted to characterize, understand and explain the nature of the textbook’s discourse. The list of peace indicators from Balasooriya (2001) was used to identify kinds of peace values represented in the textbook. The result shows that the contents of peace values, for particularly peace with nature, was seriously under represented while the most represented one is social peace. Consequently, the imbalanced representation of peace values may lead to failure of raising the optimal implementation of the three categories of peace values

The present study applied critical discourse analysis (CDA), framed in Fairclough’s three dimensional approaches to analyze visual, textual, and multimodal texts materials that represent the moral values in the textbook. The findings showed that Religiosity has the most frequently moral values found in the textbook, which is represented 36 times through different images, texts, and multimodal texts. Abstract

In recent decades, character education in language education has been discussed and studied. Textbooks are an important role to channel certain character education values. The readers not only get knowledge about academic materials but also get good values represented in the book. ELT textbooks used in secondary schools are no exception. In response to this, this article reports on a critical discourse analysis study that examines how character education values according PPK program are represented in English textbooks published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture using qualitative research design. Semiotic analysis shows that ELT textbooks represent character education values presented in the form of visual artifacts. The findings conclude that visual artifacts in textbooks do not always depict character education values. Therefore, textbook writers and teachers need to consider the values when developing and using ELT textbooks.
