Abstract

This paper shows the commodification process that occurs in Kampung Adat Sijunjung to support the development of rural tourism. The commodification process can be seen in the use of Rumah Gadang as a homestay place for guests. Rumah Gadang for the Minangkabau people is not just a place to live but a space and cultural symbol. So that if it is used as a homestay it will cause a dilemma, on the one hand Rumah Gadang needs to be maintained as a distinctive Minangkabau cultural monument and on the other hand the tourism aspect can have an economic impact on the people of Sijunjung. The dualism of Rumah Gadang as a cultural product and tourism product is what results in commodification to develop tourism in rural areas. The method used was thorough observation of Rumah Gadang and interviewing 15 residents and Ninik Mamak (traditional ruler) as members of the tribe that owns Rumah Gadang. In addition, Rumah Gadang continues to function as a place and space for social and cultural activities of the Sijunjung community. So that the values and norms that exist in Rumah Gadang as a symbol of Minangkabau culture continue to run and through homestays, the Sijunjung community can obtain additional economic benefits from the tourism sector.

Abstract

This article examines the intricate relationship between the expansion of oil palm plantations and the preservation of customary (adat) systems in the villages of Salareh Aia Utara and Salareh Aia Barat, Agam Regency, West Sumatra. Employing a critical ethnographic approach, the study investigates how customary land, traditionally managed by Ninik Mamak (traditional leaders), has been transferred to private companies—particularly PT AMP Plantation—through adat-based agreements and compensation mechanisms. The research highlights the emergence of internal conflicts among traditional leaders, disputes over authority and compensation, and broader tensions between indigenous communities and corporate interests. Findings reveal that the process of land transfer, while formally adhering to customary and legal procedures, often leads to contestation, fragmentation of community leadership, and persistent disputes over land rights and plasma distribution. The article highlights the intricate interplay of economic, social, and political factors that influence these dynamics, underscoring the need for companies and policymakers to acknowledge the evolving nature of customary authority and the importance of culturally sensitive engagement. Ultimately, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of how modernisation and agribusiness intersect with indigenous rights and social structures in contemporary Minangkabau society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the need for interactive multimedia-based teaching materials for classifying living things in order to improve students' classification and problem-solving abilities. The research was conducted at SMP Negeri 8 Bayung Lencir using a descriptive method through interviews, observations, and documentation. The research results indicate that the teaching of living organism classification is still teacher-centered, with minimal use of visual and digital media, and has not yet utilized the potential of the surrounding environment. The teaching materials used are limited to textbooks with simple and non-contextual illustrations, which impact the low classification skills and weak contextual problem-solving abilities. The diverse learning styles of students and limited access to biodiversity necessitate varied, interactive, and technology-based teaching materials. The needs analysis shows that students expect teaching materials that are easy to understand (98.82%), interesting (96.47%), contextual (89.41%), independent (81.18%), and technology-based (94.12%). Additionally, 100% of teachers stated the importance of interactive multimedia teaching materials for improving students' classification and problem-solving abilities. The results of this study serve as the basis for the need to develop interactive multimedia-based teaching materials that are relevant to student characteristics and support effective, engaging, and contextual 21st-century science learning.
