Abstract

This study aims to examine the development of students' writing literacy across educational levels. The research questions to be answered are: 1) How does writing literacy, in terms of logico-semantic aspects, develop in argumentative texts between high school students and university students? And 2) Are there significant differences in the logico-semantic structure of argumentative texts between high school students and university students? The method used is a comparative study with high school students and university students as subjects. Data in the form of argumentative paragraph texts were collected and analyzed using logico-semantic analysis, which involves the identification and assessment of the structure and logical relationships between clauses. The results of the study indicate a significant development of writing literacy from high school students to university students, marked by an increase in complexity and variation in the use of logico-semantic relations. University students' texts show better argument quality and coherence. This study suggests the need for systematic development of argumentative writing instruction from school to university, with a focus on strengthening text structure, logic, use of evidence, and more complex use of logico-semantic relations.

Abstract

The study aims to improve the diagnosis, management, and prevention of HIV/AIDS by using classification algorithms. The dataset used consists of 707,379 records and 89 columns. Data preprocessing includes removing irrelevant attributes, handling inconsistencies, and balancing the data using the NearMiss method, resulting in a balanced proportion of reactive and non-reactive HIV cases. Once the data is balanced, it is split into several ratios: 60:40, 70:30, 80:20, and 90:10. The classification models used in this study are Naive Bayes and SVM. The models are evaluated using the metrics Accuracy, Precision, Recall, and F1-Score. The results show that the SVM model achieves the highest accuracy of 82.6% with a 90:10 data split at a 6-fold value, and 82.2% with a 60:40 data split at a 5-fold value. On the other hand, Naive Bayes achieves the highest accuracy of 61.1% with a 60:40 data split.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and identify various types of relational processes found in Sundanese. The analysis is conducted using the perspective of Functional Systemic Linguistics, with a special focus on the transitivity system in the Sundanese language structure. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive approach. The data collection technique in this research is sourced from Mangle magazine. The data analysis technique involves classifying the clauses into attributive and identifying relational processes based on the transitivity system in Functional Systemic Linguistics. The results show that the texts in the Sundanese-language Mangle magazine contain typical Sundanese relational processes. The types of relational processes found are attributive and identifying relational processes. Each of these types is further divided into more specific categories: intensive, possessive, and circumstantial. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan dan mengidentifikasi berbagai jenis proses relasional yang terdapat dalam bahasa Sunda. Analisis dilakukan dengan menggunakan perspektif Linguistik Sistemik Fungsional, dengan fokus khusus pada sistem transitivitas dalam struktur bahasa Sunda. Adapun metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif.  Teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini bersumber majalah Mangle. Teknik analisis data dalam penelitian ini dilakukan dengan mengklasifikasikan klausa-klausa ke dalam proses relasional atributif dan identifikatif berdasarkan perspektif sistem transitivitas dalam Linguistik Sistemik Fungsional. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa teks-teks dalam majalah Mangle berbahasa Sunda mengandung proses relasional khas bahasa Sunda. Jenis proses relasional yang ditemukan adalah proses relasional atributif dan proses relasional identifikatif. Masing-masing dari kedua jenis proses relasional tersebut selanjutnya terbagi lagi menjadi tipe-tipe yang lebih spesifik, seperti intensive, possessive, dan circumstantial.

Abstract

The Genre-Based Approach (GBA) has been a common teaching method in Indonesia for many years, particularly for learning how to write. GBA consists of four stages: 1) Building Knowledge of the Field, 2) Modeling of the Text, 3) Joint Construction of the Text, and 4) Independent Construction of the Text. This research examines how effectively GBA and teacher feedback can improve high school students' understanding of discussion texts. This research combined Classroom Action Research (CAR) with a Genre-Based Approach (GBA) to investigate learning outcomes in a class of 12th - grade at SMA Negeri 1 Garut. The CAR cycle, involving planning, action, observation, and reflection, was interwoven with the GBA stages: building field knowledge, modeling, joint construction, and independent construction of texts. The Genre-Based Approach (GBA) provides a structured framework for analyzing texts, making it easier for both teachers and students. By breaking down the structure of texts like discussions, GBA helps students understand how to present their own arguments effectively, including counterarguments and reasoned conclusions. Furthermore, providing constructive feedback to students is essential for their learning. This feedback not only improves their understanding of the material but also enhances their interest, motivation, and performance in future assignments.The study found that GBA is beneficial for improving students' understanding of discussion texts. However, the research also highlighted that the successful implementation of GBA often depends on the teacher providing effective feedback to students. The study concluded that when implemented effectively, GBA, combined with constructive teacher feedback, significantly enhances high school students' writing skills for discussion texts.Keywords: Genre-based Approach (GBA); feedback; high school; writing skill; discussion text

Abstract

Humor is a universal language that cuts across cultural barriers. Trevor Noah's stand-up special "Don't Lose Your Accent / Learning Accents are good examples of humor in the classroom. The theory of systemic functional linguistics says language functions as a system for meaning-making. A positive and fun atmosphere in the learning environment can increase motivation and interest in the language. Moreover, it often involves wordplay, puns, and linguistic creativity. Engaging in language play helps learners become more comfortable with the structure and flexibility of the language, fostering linguistic creativity and a deeper understanding of how the language works. In hence, Incorporating humor into language learning can be done through a variety of means, including funny anecdotes, jokes, cartoons, humorous videos, and interactive activities. It's essential to strike a balance between humor and educational content, ensuring that the humor enhances the learning experience rather than becoming a distraction

Abstract

The pro-Israel product boycott campaign, initiated in October 2023, has had a significant impact on consumer behavior, particularly within the coffee industry. Starbucks, often perceived as linked to Israel, has been one of the brands most affected by this movement. This study employs a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach to examine the linguistic features and underlying motivations expressed in the discourse surrounding the boycott, with a specific focus on Starbucks in discussions on X (formerly Twitter) in Indonesia. CDA is particularly suited for this study as it allows for an in-depth exploration of power dynamics, ideological positioning, and social influences embedded in digital discourse. Using Martin and White’s Appraisal Theory, the research analyzes how attitudes—expressed through affect, judgment, and appreciation—shape language choices and construct interpersonal meanings in boycott-related discussions, revealing how public sentiment is mobilized and reinforced through discourse. The analysis identifies three dominant types of attitudes: judgment, appreciation, and affect, with judgment being the most prevalent. The findings suggest that the discourse reflects strong sentiments of anger and concern toward the Israel-Palestine conflict, as well as a collective stance in support of the boycott. These attitudes are expressed through language that critiques Starbucks and expresses solidarity with the Palestinian cause. The study’s time frame, spanning from October 25, 2023, to August 15, 2024, may limit the scope of the findings, but provides a focused view of the discourse during a key period in the boycott movement. This research contributes to understanding how social media discourse shapes consumer activism and the public’s relationship with global brands during politically charged times.

Abstract

AbstractThis research examines cultural reproduction strategies for maintaining local languages in elementary schools in Indonesia. The academic struggle for local language maintenance programs needs to be refined with alternative thinking and solutions. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach and a library research and outlines various findings regarding local language maintenance programs in elementary schools. Maintaining local languages in the management of elementary schools in Indonesia can be done through Pierre Bourdieu’s cultural reproduction strategies through programs orientated towards strengthening aspects of 1) Habitus, which focuses on externalizing awareness of the importance of preserving local languages; 2) capital, which focuses on resources and supporting capacity for local language preservation; and 3) arena, which focuses on educational and learning activities. The design of strengthening local language preservation through habitus is carried out in several steps: 1) applying linguistic knowledge; 2) promoting language loyalty, pride, and awareness of norms; 3) engaging in literature on language preservation and authenticity; and 4) fostering a positive language attitude. Meanwhile, the capital strengthening program through resources and carrying capacity is carried out: 1) the implementation of the Indonesian Language Policy; 2) the promotion of family, neighborhood, and religious values; 3) linguistic diversity. The strengthening program implemented through the arena includes: 1) strategies that include formal learning, extracurricular activities, and mandatory activities; and 2) technology, documentation, and revitalization.Keywords: habitus, capital, arena, cultural reproduction.AbstrakPenelitian ini mengkaji strategi reproduksi budaya dalam pemertahanan bahasa daerah pada sekolah dasar di Indonesia. Perjuangan akademik terhadap program pemertahanan bahasa daerah perlu disempurnakan dengan pemikiran dan solusi alternatif. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan pendekatan kualitatif dan telaah pustaka untuk menguraikan berbagai temuan mengenai program pemertahanan bahasa daerah di sekolah dasar. Pemertahanan bahasa daerah dalam pengelolaan sekolah dasar di Indonesia dapat dilakukan melalui strategi reproduksi budaya Pierre Bourdieu melalui program yang berorientasi pada penguatan aspek 1) habitus, yang fokus pada eksternalisasi kesadaran akan pentingnya pelestarian bahasa daerah; 2) kapital, yang fokus pada sumber daya dan daya dukung pelestarian bahasa daerah; dan 3) arena, yang fokus pada kegiatan pendidikan dan pembelajaran. Rancangan penguatan pelestarian bahasa daerah melalui habitus dilakukan dengan beberapa langkah: 1) penerapan pengetahuan linguistik; 2) mempromosikan kesetiaan berbahasa, kebanggaan, dan kesadaran terhadap norma; 3) menggeluti kepustakaan tentang pelestarian dan keaslian bahasa; dan 4) menumbuhkan sikap berbahasa yang positif. Sedangkan program penguatan kapital melalui sumber daya dan daya dukung dilakukan: 1) kebijakan Bahasa Indonesia; 2) keluarga, lingkungan sekitar, dan agama; 3) keberagaman bahasa. Program penguatan melalui arena tersebut adalah: 1) strategi meliputi pembelajaran formal, ekstrakurikuler, dan wajib; 2) teknologi, dokumentasi dan revitalisasi.Kata kunci: habitus, kapital, arena, reproduksi budaya.

Abstract

This study investigates the initial implementation of multiliteracies pedagogy (MLP) in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom in Indonesia. Although the increasing complexity of language learning requires innovative pedagogical approaches, many EFL classrooms continue to rely on conventional teaching practices. In addition, limited studies have explored how teachers initially understand and apply MLP proposed by the New London Group in EFL contexts. Using a single-case qualitative design, this study involved one English teacher at an Indonesian senior high school. Data were collected through pre- and post-implementation interviews, classroom observations, and lesson plan documentation. The data were analyzed thematically to examine changes in teacher cognition and instructional practices during the implementation process. The findings indicate that the teacher’s understanding of pedagogy developed from a procedural focus on activities and media toward a more conceptual and pedagogically informed perspective. This shift was reflected in lesson design, questioning strategies, classroom interaction, and the teacher’s role in facilitating students’ meaning-making. Furthermore, the implementation process became a significant site for professional learning, fostering reflective and student-centered teaching practices. The study contributes to the growing discussion of MLP in EFL education by emphasizing the importance of supporting teachers in translating pedagogical frameworks into effective classroom practice and professional development.

Abstract

Developing speaking skills remains a significant challenge for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in higher education. While Project-Based Learning (PBL) has been recognized as an effective student-centered approach, limited studies have explored the integration of presentation, storytelling, and debate activities within a single project framework to enhance speaking proficiency. This study aims to investigate the implementation of PBL and examine its contribution to students’ speaking development. A qualitative case study design was employed involving EFL students enrolled in speaking courses at a higher education institution. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, recall interviews, speaking performance assessments, and document analysis. The findings reveal that PBL was implemented through five stages: project planning, collaborative inquiry, project development, oral performance implementation, and reflection. The integration of presentation, storytelling, and debate activities improved students’ fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary mastery, grammatical accuracy, and communicative competence. Furthermore, students reported increased confidence, motivation, classroom participation, and willingness to communicate, while experiencing lower levels of speaking anxiety. These findings suggest that PBL provides authentic learning experiences that effectively support speaking development and foster positive learner engagement in EFL contexts.
