Abstract

Abstract The change of curriculum has affected the approach of English learning in Indonesia, especially for Vocational School education. In curriculum 2013, the content of English material focuses on general English which does not meet students’ needs that require teachers to teach ESP. Therefore, teachers need to develop ESP teaching materials. The limitations of their knowledge, time, and experience make them uncreative and tend to choose the available book. Furthermore, the government do not facilitate them to have a training or workshop about material development. This community service program is urgent to conduct to help them in developing ESP teaching material. The teacher joined FGD, seminar, and workshop. The results of this community service program are; 1) there is improvement in teachers’ knowledge about ESP material development steps; 2) teachers’ motivation in developing ESP teaching material is increased, and 3) the quality of their ESP teaching material is quite good and applicable for their students. Abstrak Perubahan Kurikulum telah mempengaruhi pendekatan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di Indonesia khususnya pada Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK). Hal ini juga berpengaruh pada buku ajar yang diberikan untuk para peserta didik di SMK. Pada kurikukum 2013 bahan ajar yang disediakan berisi Bahasa Inggris secara umum (General English). Padahal adanya perbedaan jurusan di SMK menjadi tuntutan perbedaan kebutuhan siswa dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan mengharuskan guru mengajarkan ESP (English for Specific Purposes) sesuai dengan jurusan peserta didiknya. Tugas guru dalam pengembangan bahan ajar sangat dperlukan, akan tetapi dengan keterbatasan ilmu pengetahuan, waktu, serta pengalaman pengembangan bahan ajar yang kurang membuat guru cenderung tidak kreatif dan hanya menggunakan bahan ajar yang sudah disediakan oleh Kemendikbud saja. Selain itu ketersediaan pelatihan pengembangan bahan ajar dari MGMP maupun dari Dinas Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan setempat belum pernah dilakukan. Melihat pentingnya hal tersebut maka pelatihan pengembangan bahan ajar bagi guru-guru SMK dilakukan dengan beberapa metode seperti Focus Group Discussion (FGD) dan workshop. Hasil dari kegiatan ini ialah adanya peningkatan pemapahan guru akan langkah-langkah penegmbangan bahan ajar, adanya perbaikan bahan ajar Bahasa Inggris berbasis ESP dan adanya peningkatan motivasi guru untuk membuat buku ajar.

Abstract

Pelaku usaha di Desa Wisata Pangandaran menjadi salah satu SDM wisata yang terdampak pandemi Covid 19. Ketidaksiapan akan krisis dan pandemi ini merupakan hasil dari rendahnya kecerdasan emosional para pelaku usaha sehingga menurunkan kinerja mereka dalam melakukan strategi pemasaran dan pelayanan konsumen. Disamping itu karena tidak adanya wisatawan asing yang berkunjung ke Desa Wisata Pangandaran selama dua tahun terakhir membuat para pelaku usaha lupa dan canggung dalam menggunakan bahasa Inggris dan hal ini akan sangat merugikan mereka. Merujuk pada permasalahan tersebut maka tujuan pelatihan strategi pemasaran, pelayanan konsumen, dan English for Tourism and English for Business ialah untuk melatih kemampuan pelaku usaha dalam memahami informasi tentang prilaku konsumen dan mengidentifikasi tahapan pemasaran, meningkatkan kualitas pemasaran dan pelayanan, serta kualitas bahasa Inggris para pelaku usaha, dan menginisiasi pembuatan Klinik Bisnis bagi pelaku usaha di Desa Wisata Pangandaran yang akan difasilitasi oleh laboratorium bisnis Program Studi Manajemen dan laboratorium Bahasa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan pelatihan dilakukan selama 8 pertemuan. Hasil kegiatan ini diantaranya adanya peningkatan pemahaman para pelaku usaha tentang EQ dalam berwirausaha, berubahnya mindset para pelaku usaha dalam melakukan pemasaran dan pelayanan konsumen, dan meningkatknya kemampuan berbahasa Inggris untuk wisata dan bisnis bagi para pelaku usaha. Marketing Strategy, Consumer Service, and English for Tourism and Business Training for Pangandaran Business Actor Business actors in Pangandaran are one of the great sources of increasing income and expanding job opportunities for the community there. However, their low emotional intelligence and unpreparedness for the crisis and pandemic of Covid-19 caused an increase in unemployment and bankruptcy. The pandemic also decreases their performance in implementing marketing and customer service strategies. In addition, the absence of international visiting Pangandaran for the past two years has made them forget and doubt in using English. Referring to these problems, the training on ESQ, marketing strategy assistance and customer service, and ESP are needed. The training aims to increase participants' understanding and ability about consumer behaviour, marketing stages, marketing and service, and English. The training was held in 8 meetings. The results of these activities showed that 1) their understanding of EQ in entrepreneurship is increasing, 2) their mindset in marketing and customer service is changing, and 3) their English for tourism and business ability has improved.

Abstract

The Localish Program is a community service program in the form of teaching English that focuses on improving speaking skills and providing local wisdom values through storytelling activities for elementary school-age children who live in Kampung Cantilan, Sukarame Village, Tasikmalaya Regency. This program is a follow-up program from the previous community service program, namely empowering English book libraries and teaching English which focuses on increasing vocabulary. The method used is the practice of community development adapted from Vincent (2009) starting from forming a team, formulating goals, determining target community, analyzing the needs of the target community, prioritizing problem solutions, preparing, implementing, reviewing and evaluating, and the last is determining new needs and target community. While the steps used in the learning process are: orientation, training, feedback, and continuation. Pre-test and post-test were carried out on seventeen participants at the beginning and end of the program. From the results of these tests, it can be interpreted that the English-speaking skills of elementary school age children in Kampung Cantilan have increased after participating in this program. Meanwhile, the results of the interviews proved that this program contributed in increasing children's understanding of local wisdom values.

Abstract

This research that aims to investigating how teachers implement of online assessment at junior high schools and find out the challenges faced by the teachers in implementation of online assessments in English lesson at junior high schools in Tasikmalaya. This study takes place at junior high schools in Tasikmalaya. This study sample 6 English teachers were chosen purposive sampling technique. This research is classifying as case study. Case study is using because this approach can develop more in-depth analysis of a case (Cresswell, 2018, p.295). This research is a suitable a case study because it raises a phenomenon that is currently happening in Tasikmalaya. In the results of this study found online assessment tools used by teachers, namely Google Classroom, Google Form, WhatsApp, Zoom, and which are less frequently used, namely Blogs and Quizizz. Based on the data generated from the interview there are obstacles encountered by teachers like often finding students asking for delays in assessment, late students in work collections, trouble seeing student insights, trouble getting feedback because it's hard to contact a few students. Abstract

Politeness is necessary for the way people socialize. However, some people choose to communicate impolitely despite knowing that it’s inappropriate. This study aims to find out how people use impoliteness strategies in communication, and identify the impoliteness strategies used in the Vice-Presidential United States of Amerika candidates debate between Mike Pence and Sen. Kamala Harris on October 8th, 2020, while also figuring out the purpose of using these strategies in the debate. For this reason, to identify the use of impoliteness strategies, the researcher used Jonathan Culpeper's (2005) theory of impoliteness strategies and a qualitative approach to analyze the data. The data was taken from a YouTube video entitled “Full Debate: Vice President Mike Pence and Sen. Kamala Harris | WSJ” posted by the Wall Street Journal on October 8, 2020. The results of this study revealed that four out of five impolite strategies were used, with negative impoliteness as the most commonly used strategy. The other four strategies are bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, and sarcasm and mock politeness. Meanwhile, withholding politeness was never used in the debate.

Abstract

Peningkatan kualitas SDM Pariwisata merupakan salah satu langkah strategis dalam mengembangkan dan meningkatkan pertumbuhan wisata dan perekonomian di kawasan wisata tersebut. Kabupaten Pangandaran yang memiliki destinasi wisata alam dan budaya yang terkenal di Jawa Barat menjadi kawasan wisata favorit yang terdampak pandemi Covid 19. Beberapa kegiatan pelatihan penguatan ekonomi di kawasan Pangandaran telah dilakukan oleh pemerintah maupun perguruan tinggi, namun pelatihan tersebut tidak menyentuh pada psikis para pelaku usaha. Maka kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk 1) memberikan pengetahuan tentang strategi pengelolaan kecerdasan emosional bagi para pelaku usaha, 2) meningkatkan kemampuan pengelolaan kecerdasan emosional bagi para pelaku usaha, 3) menambah kompetensi berbicara Bahasa Inggris bagi para pelaku usaha. Pelatihan dilakukan selama 7 pertemuan dengan tiga tahap kegiatan; simulasi ESQ (1 pertemuan), pelatihan pengelolaan kecerdasan emosional (3 pertemuan), dan pelatihan Bahasa Inggris (3 pertemuan). Hasil dari kegiatan ini ialah adanya peningkatan pengetahuan akan pengelolaan kecerdasan emosional 82% dan keterampilan berbahasa Inggris 75%, keberhasilan ini dikarenakan 100% peserta hadir dan mengikuti rangkaian kegiatan pelatihan, dan 85% peserta berpartisipasi aktif dengan mengisi modul bahasa Inggris yang diberikan. Dengan demikian, 85% peserta merasakan kebermanfaatan kegiatan dan puas dengan pelayanan kegiatan, bahkan 90% peserta bahkan siap dan bersedia untuk mengikuti kegiatan pelatihan jika diadakan kembali di periode selanjutnya.

Abstract

The English Learning Oasis or Taman Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris (TPBI) program was a community service committed to providing free English courses to students of Madrasah Diniyah Takmiliyah (MDT) or an islamic enrichment school. This community service was given to the 4th-grade students of MDT Al Mujahidin, one of MDTs in Cikunir, Singaparna, Tasikmalaya Regency. Most of the students do not receive English lessons at their school. The program aimed to improve these MDT students’ interest and skills in English. In this English course, they learned four language skills; listening, reading, speaking, and writing. The teaching team for this course consisted of students majoring in English Education Department of Universitas Perjuangan Tasikmalaya. This community service was executed in seven stages; needs analysis, pretest, syllabus design, lesson planning, dissemination of the lesson plan, implementation of the English course, and evaluation (posttest and perception survey). This English course yielded positive results in two areas. First, this English course was proven to increase students English learning outcomes. It can be seen from the average score of posttest (88) which was higher than that of pretest (53,59). Second, the students developed positive attitudes and interest in English. The initial survey indicated that 16% of the students did not desire an English course while the final survey revealed that 100% of the students wish for the continued implementation of the English course.

Abstract

The field of education has experienced significant changes due to technological advancements. In response to these changes, online learning has become a popular teaching mode. The COVID-19 pandemic has made online learning a mandatory approach to education. Therefore, a variety of online learning tools have been developed for use. The primary goal of this research was to explore the viewpoints of educators regarding the implementation of digital media for English language teaching amid the pandemic. This research focused on investigating the challenges and the best practices experienced by Junior High School teachers when designing EFL online learning. Three English teachers were taken as participants. Moreover, a qualitative research method was utilized. Semi-structured interviews and observation were used to collect the data, and descriptive analysis was chosen as the data analysis technique. The findings revealed that the challenges faced by teachers were their difficulties in designing effective online teaching and learning plans. In addition, the best practices experienced by the teachers and students when running virtual learning were using digital media, such as Google Classroom, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Since they were readily available, digital media facilitated students' participation in learning the English language.

Abstract

POKLAHSAR Melati Binangkit merupakan kelompok ibu rumah tangga yang memanfaatkan ikan yang melimpah di daerahnya untuk dibuat nugget, kerupuk, serundeng, dan sempol. Melimpahnya ikan sebagai bahan baku pengembangan produk tidak diikuti dengan kualitas produk serta pemasaranya. Rasa yang berubah - ubah, bentuk yang tidak sama, serta kemasan yang kurang menarik membuat pemasaran produk ini tersendat sehingga produksinya terancam terhenti. Permasalahan produksi dan pemasaran yang dihadapi kelompok tersebut menjadi poin utama pada pelaksanaan pengabdian ini. Solusi yang diberikan diantaranya membuat SOP quality control produk, membantu legalitas kelompok dengan membuat NIB (Nomor Induk Berusaha), izin PIRT (Pelaku Usaha dan Industri Rumah Tangga), dan sertifikat halal, memanfaatkan marketplace sebagai media pemasaran, dan pembuatan kemasan, dan iklan menggunakan konsep multimodality. Kegiatan dilakukan dengan cara memberikan pelatihan dan pendampingan yang difokuskan pada satu produk olahan iklan yaitu kerupuk. Pelatihan yang diberikan diantaranya pelatihan strategi produksi dan pemasaran, pemanfaatan market place, dan konsep multimodality pada iklan. Sedangkan pendampingan yang dilakukan ialah pembuatan SOP quality control, logo, NIB, PIRT, dan sertifikat halal, serta pembuatan kemasan dan iklan. Hasil yang diperoleh dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini diantaranya: 30% pengetahuan peserta akan marketplace dan konsep Multimodality meningkat, terbitnya NIB, PIRT, dan Halal, serta dibuatnya akun marketplace, kemasan, dan iklan produk

Abstract

Perubahan Kurikulum membuat mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris di Sekolah Dasar berubah dari muatan lokal menjadi program ektrakurikuler. Berdasarkan data pra-observasi, di Kecamatan Ciamis pengajaran Bahasa Inggris mengalami beberapa kendala seperti kualifikasi guru yang bukan Sarjana Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, pengunaan teknik serta metode mengajar Bahasa Inggris yang monoton dan menjenuhkan, kurangnya sumber ajar, serta tidak adanya pelatihan dan pembinaan pengajaran Bahasa Inggris bagi pembelajar anak. Melihat berbagai permasalahan tersebut maka penulis melakukan pengabdian kepada masyarakat dengan memberikan pelatihan pengajaran Bahasa Inggris dan Forum Group Discussion (FGD) bagi guru-guru Sekolah Dasar di Kecamatan Ciamis. Hasil pengabdian ini menunjukan bahwa guru memiliki motivasi yang baik dalam meningkatkan kompetensi mereka dalam pengajaran Bahasa Inggris, pemahaman mereka terhadap karakteristik pembelajar anak juga meningkat, serta adanya peningkatan kemampuan guru untuk menciptakan pengajaran yang bermakna dan menyenangkan.Kata kunci: Pengajaran, Bahasa Inggris, Sekolah Dasar Socialization of English for Young Learners (EYL) for Elementary School Teachers in Cluster II Ciamis Kecamatan District ABSTRACTThe change of curriculum makes English subjects in Elementary School move from local content to the extracurricular program. Based on pre-observation data, there are some obstacles face by the teacher in teaching English to young learners in Ciamis. Those are the unqualified English teachers, the monotonous of teaching techniques and methods, the lack of using teaching sources, and the unavailable of EYL workshops. Therefore, to solve those problems the author conducted a community service in the form of the EYL workshop and FGD.  The community service makes the teachers' motivation to improve their competency in English language teaching increase. Besides, their understanding of the characteristics of children and their ability to create meaningful and interesting teaching also increase.Keywords: Teaching, English, Elemntary School
