Abstract

This study investigated the impact of integrating Flipped Learning (FL) and Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) on the pragmatic competence of English as Foreign Language (EFL) students, with a particular focus on their pragmalinguistic competence related to making requests and refusals. Conducted in an Islamic higher education setting, this research addresses a gap in the existing literature, as the combined effect of FL and STAD on pragmatic competence remains underexplored. The study aimed to empirically assess the influence of this integrated pedagogical approach and examining students' perceptions of its effectiveness. The research gathered quantitative and qualitative data using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design. Initially, quantitative data were collected from pre- and post-test scores using a two-group experimental design (experimental group N=28, control group N=28). Discourse Completion Tests (DCTs), focusing on requests and refusals, were employed to evaluate pragmatic competence. Subsequently, semi-structured interviews with eight students from experimental group were conducted to delve into their perceptions. ANCOVA statistical analysis revealed that the flipped-STAD group significantly outperformed the control group on post-test scores, demonstrating its effectiveness for enhancing pragmatic competence in requests and refusals. In contrast, the control group received traditional teacher-centred instruction, which limited opportunities for interactive pragmatic practice. This comparison between student-centred and teacher-centred methods might inherently favour the interactive approach. The findings from the Interviews indicated that students had positive perceptions of flipped-STAD for developing pragmalinguistic competence. Thus, flipped-STAD seems a promising strategy for enhancing pragmatic competence in EFL, offering educators with an effective method. However, further research is needed to compare it with other student-centred approaches.

Abstract

Designing effective English for Specific Purposes (ESP) lessons in vocational schools remains a challenge, as teachers often struggle to source authentic materials, align content with workplace demands, and collaborate across disciplines. This study investigates the collaboration between vocational English teachers, university students, and lecturers in developing ESP lesson designs. It utilized the school–university partnership-based Lesson Study framework (Plan, Do, See) across twelve meetings in Indonesian vocational schools. A qualitative–quantitative design was employed with five English teachers, three lecturers from English education, agriculture, and farming, and thirty-five pre-service teachers. Data were collected through observations, a self-developed questionnaire that was content-validated by professors in a private university, semi-structured interviews, and field notes, and analyzed thematically and descriptively. Survey results show that over 85% of participants agreed or strongly agreed that lesson study enhanced their ESP lesson planning, improved their understanding of students’ needs, and strengthened collaboration with colleagues. Interviews and observations corroborated these findings, highlighting that lesson study fostered trust, professional community, and greater confidence in integrating authentic workplace materials. Pre-service teachers reported improved ability to connect theory with practice, while lecturers enriched lesson design with subject-specific expertise. Challenges included selecting suitable syllabus topics, sourcing authentic ESP materials, and managing online delivery. The study demonstrates that school–university partnerships through lesson study provide an effective model for enhancing ESP pedagogy and professional development, supporting teacher autonomy and preparing pre-service teachers with collaborative competencies for future careers.

Abstract

The field of education has experienced significant changes due to technological advancements. In response to these changes, online learning has become a popular teaching mode. The COVID-19 pandemic has made online learning a mandatory approach to education. Therefore, a variety of online learning tools have been developed for use. The primary goal of this research was to explore the viewpoints of educators regarding the implementation of digital media for English language teaching amid the pandemic. This research focused on investigating the challenges and the best practices experienced by Junior High School teachers when designing EFL online learning. Three English teachers were taken as participants. Moreover, a qualitative research method was utilized. Semi-structured interviews and observation were used to collect the data, and descriptive analysis was chosen as the data analysis technique. The findings revealed that the challenges faced by teachers were their difficulties in designing effective online teaching and learning plans. In addition, the best practices experienced by the teachers and students when running virtual learning were using digital media, such as Google Classroom, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Since they were readily available, digital media facilitated students' participation in learning the English language.

Abstract

Critical thinking in the education of Indonesia has not been well socialized; students also tend to accept information without evaluating it first and change ideas uncritically. This case is very detrimental. Therefore, teacher plays an important role in developing stu- dents' critical thinking and critical reading ability. The puropse of this study is to find out teachers' strategies in improving students' critical thinking and critical reading ability. This study used qualitative research design, interview and questionaire was used asa research instruments in this study. The results of this study shows strategies used by the teacher are asking open-ended questions, restate and clarify the meaning of a few sentences from the text, and use small group discussions with specific tasks assigned. In short, the teachers' understanding of critical reading and critical thinking is low, their strategy in improving students' critical reading is also limited.

Abstract

Abstract   POKLAHSAR Melati Binangkit is a group of housewives who utilize the abundant fish raw materials in the area to make nuggets, crackers, serundeng, and sempol. The abundance of fish raw materials as potential product development is contrary to product quality and marketing. Changeable flavours, unequal shapes, and unattractive packaging make the marketing of these products stagnant and a halt in production. The problems in production and marketing are the main points of this community service. The solutions provided include making product quality control standard, assisting group legality by making NIB (Business Identification Number), PIRT (Business and Home Industry) permits, and halal certificates, utilizing the marketplace as a marketing medium, and making packaging and advertisements using the concept of Multimodality. Activities are carried out by providing training and mentoring focused on one processed advertising of crackers. The trainings and assistance were about production and marketing strategies, marketplaces, and multimodality in advertisements. The results obtained from this community service activity include: 30% of members' knowledge of the marketplace and the concept of Multimodality increased, the issuance of NIB, PIRT, and Halal, and the creation of marketplace accounts, standing pouch packaging, and advertisements. Abstract

This study investigates the types of listening activities and the extent to which they reflect authenticity in the Indonesian EFL textbook Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/SMK/MAK Kelas 10 A published by Intan Pariwara. Through content analysis, the study identifies the distribution of listening activity types and examines the level of authenticity in both tasks and texts. The findings reveal that selective listening is the most dominant type, while extensive listening is absent. In terms of authenticity, most tasks and texts are semi-authentic, with limited fully authentic materials. These results indicate that the textbook emphasizes controlled and form-focused listening practice, offering limited opportunities for learners to engage with real-life spoken English. The study highlights the need for more diverse and authentic listening inputs to better support students’ communicative competence in EFL contexts.
