Abstract

Relasi perkawinan antar etnis, khususnya Jawa-Tionghoa, merupakan fenomena yang cukup sering ditemui di Indonesia. Namun demikian, perbedaan budaya yang khas dari masing-masing etnis dapat menjadi sumber potensi konflik perkawinan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi dinamika pengalaman pasangan dalam mencapai kepuasan perkawinan pada relasi perkawinan antar etnis Jawa-Tionghoa. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan fenomenologi. Penelitian ini melibatkan empat orang informan atau dua pasangan dengan suami beretnis Jawa dan istri beretnis Tionghoa. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah interpretative phenonenological analysis (IPA). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa adaptasi budaya, resolusi konflik, intimacy, relasi dengan lingkungan sosial dan pengelolaan keuangan menjadi aspek penting dalam pencapaian kepuasan perkawinan pada pasangan antar etnis Jawa-Tionghoa.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the social status of Singaporean English, within the framework of Singapore’s multilingual societies. The context of World Englishes, especially the model crafted by Kachru, underlined the dynamic evolution of the language. This descriptive qualitative study explores empirically and theoretically the topic based on the secondary sources. The involvement of a related-literature review from previous researchers and experts, written in some journal articles and scientific books, has been considered. The result of the study demonstrates that the indigenization’s process of Singaporean English is linked to the roles and functions of the language in multilingual, multiethnic and multicultural contexts. Next, the management of multilingualism is achieved by the recognition of ethnic and linguistic diversity. Lastly, Singapore has been successful in language policy which equates ethnic identity and political role with one of four official languages.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the emblematic discourse markers lah in Colloquial Singaporean English (CSgE). The questions addressed are why the lah particle is commonly used as a discourse marker in CSgE and to what extent it contributes to the analysis and description of discourse markers in English language. This descriptive qualitative study explores empirically and theoretically the topic grounded on the secondary sources. The involvement of a related-literature review from previous researchers and experts, written in some journal articles and scientific books, has been considered. The result of the study demonstrates that the particle lah is indeed commonly used as a discourse marker by Singaporeans and identified as one of the most emblematic discourse markers in CSgE. The notion of diglossic situation seems to be one of the reasons why lah is widely used among Singaporeans. The pragmatic function of lah is noticeable as well since it is used to indicate emphasis, solidarity, familiarity and informality. Finally, the particle lah surely contributes to the analysis and description of discourse markers because it represents a naturally-occurring example of English in use. So, lah may enrich the English grammar, highlight its pragmatic function, and demonstrate the variability of English.

Abstract

Inter-ethnic marriages have challenges in the adaptation process due to cultural differences, stereotypes and prejudices between ethnicities. This study aims to explore the dynamics of marital adaptation in Chinese-Javanese couples. The informants in this study are Chinese-Javanese couples who have been married for more than 10 years. The research method used is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. The results of this study found four main aspects in the process of marital adaptation in Chinese-Javanese couples, namely: Cultural adjustment, conflict management, intimacy and egalitarian principles. The further implication of the success of the adaptation process is the sustainability of marital relations in the long term.

Abstract

In this global era, mastery of the English language by students is an essential skill that is emphasized. Presentation skills in English, which are used in both the educational and professional worlds, need to be developed among high school students. This is the aim of the P5 Poster Presentation program, which is implemented for high school students in Belitang District, East OKU Regency, through an interactive and enjoyable learning method. The program, which covers the basics of presentation techniques, effective use of the English language, and building self-confidence, is conducted in the form of intensive training and a competition that encourages active participation from the students.

Abstract

The research aims to develop web-based learning media to foster literacy in higher education that is valid, practical, and potentially effective.  Besides, this study attempts to obtain the average literacy score using the developed web-based learning media.  The researchers employed the ADDIE model of instructional design comprising five phases: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.  The research subjects were university students of Musi Charitas Catholic University, particularly the English Language Education Study Program students.  The data collecting technique employed tests, questionnaires, and documentation.  The collected data was analyzed by using qualitative descriptive analysis and thematic analysis.  The research results show that web-based learning media on literacy using Google Sites is categorized as valid and practical and has potential effects.  The result shows that the average literacy score is 84.8.  Thus, web-based learning is likely to foster literacy in the context of higher education.

Abstract

Currently, learning a language does not only have to be done in school. Facilities and places are available to support the language learning process which can be accessed directly or virtually. This flexibility enables language centers or institutions to emerge its active role as a center for language learning and services for many users. This study aims to investigate students’ perceptions and attitudes towards language learning and services at a language center. It is a descriptive research which involves the language service users as the respondent of the study. Closed-ended questionnaire about perceptions and attitudes is used to obtain the data. Afterwards, the data are analyzed and interpreted descriptively. Findings are expected to bring beneficial and constructive inputs towards the betterment of language learning and services provided by the language center.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to design a TOEFL preparation program for the Rethorica Class of St. Paulus Minor Seminary Palembang, aimed at improving reading skills essential for post-high school education and English proficiency in today's disruptive era. The program, which lasted for 7 days, involved 27 seminarians and integrated lectures, exercises, tests, and discussions. It included pre- and post-tests to measure progress, along with a questionnaire to gather feedback. The reading skills targeted were main idea identification, text organization, direct and indirect question answering. Results showed a significant improvement, as evidenced by a higher score in the post-test compared to the pre-test. Inference statistics revealed a significance value of 0.005, indicating meaningful change. The questionnaire results confirmed that the program effectively supported TOEFL reading skills development. This study offers insights for improving TOEFL preparation programs in seminaries and similar institutions, emphasizing structured training methods to enhance reading skills and test-taking strategies. The originality of this research lies in its focus on seminarians and its empirical evidence of the positive impact of tailored, short-term TOEFL training on their English proficiency.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan untuk mengatasi permasalahan yang berkaitan dengan perkembangan psikologis, kesehatan mental, dan manajemen konflik bagi para seminaris di era digital. Program ini dilakukan bekerja sama dengan Seminari Menengah St. Paulus Palembang melalui serangkaian tahapan yang terstruktur. Tahap awal mencakup koordinasi dengan mitra, penyusunan materi pelatihan, serta pengembangan instrumen umpan balik. Pelatihan yang diberikan mencakup topik penting seperti perkembangan psikologis remaja, kesadaran akan kesehatan mental, dan strategi penyelesaian konflik dengan menekankan nilai-nilai Kristiani seperti kasih dan pengampunan. Selain itu, lokakarya dan diskusi juga dilakukan untuk mendorong refleksi mengenai penggunaan teknologi digital dalam formatio spiritual. Umpan balik dari peserta menunjukkan peningkatan kesadaran akan kesehatan mental, pemahaman yang lebih baik tentang manajemen konflik, serta perlunya pengelolaan teknologi secara bijak. Sebagian besar seminaris juga menyatakan minat untuk mengikuti sesi lanjutan atau pendampingan jangka panjang guna mendukung penerapan ilmu yang telah diperoleh. Program ini ditutup dengan pengumpulan data, penyusunan laporan akhir, serta publikasi hasil dalam media massa dan jurnal akademik. Umpan balik positif dari peserta menunjukkan bahwa kegiatan ini memiliki relevansi dan dampak yang signifikan dalam membekali seminaris dengan keterampilan esensial untuk formatio di era digital.

Abstract

Our world has been transformed dramatically by COVID-19 Pandemic as it affected health, economy, politic, social, education, etc. The aim of this research is discovering students’ reflection toward their personal and academic life during early COVID-19 pandmic situations grounded on three zones, namely fear, learning, and growth zones. This descriptive qualitative survey research used questionnaires to gather the data from 187 freshmen in a university in Palembang. The data were analyzed and interpreted by using a thematic analysis consisting of six steps, namely (1) familiarizing with the data, (2) generating initial codes, (3) searching for themes, (4) reviewing themes, (5) defining and naming themes, and (6) producing the report. The research results show that students reflected on their personal and academic life differently when it was reflected based on the three zones. There were also some factors influencing the reflection, namely the transition between senior high school and university and the typically online learning process demanding autonomous learning. Finally, the research suggests that, alongside the society, students might learn how to move gradually one zone to another in order to overcome this global crisis. Therefore, covid-19 pandemic should be perceived then as a lesson learnt.
