Abstract

This study aimed at finding out whether or not (1) the language learning strategies had a significant relationship with language proficiency, (2) there was significant difference in language proficiency among semester, (3) there were relationships between categories of language learning strategies and academic achievement gave contributions to the value of language proficiency, and (5) there were significant differences between the students pf Regular Program and  Extension Program in their language learning strategies, academic achievement, and language proficiency. The statistical analysis show that there were significant relationships among language learning strategy, academic achievement and language proficiency, there were differences in language proficiency between first and third semesters and between fifth and seventh semesters, and there was also significant differences between Regular and Extension Program in Language Proficiency, Academic Achievement, and Language Learning Strategies.

Abstract

Listening comprehension is a course which students majoring in English must take. It is also a part of every English competence test. It is usually considered as a difficult course just because students usually have problems in understanding what they are listening either in classrooms or in tests. There are factors which contribute to these problems. Students and teachers must recoqnize these problems in order to have better listening comprehensions. There are also suggestions to solve these problems. This paper is discusing why listening comprehension is difficult and possible solutions which students and teahers can do.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to find out the general description of learning styles, types of learning styles, and English proficiency of students of English Language Education Program,Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP),Sriwijaya University and to find out whether there was a correlation between their learning styles and their English proficiency in general. The population of this study was the 3rd, 5th and 7th semester students of Palembang and Inderalaya campuses. The results show that in general the learning style of the students was dominated by verbal learning style with the percentage of 46.3%followed by social, logical, auditory, solitary, visual, and physical learning styles with the percentage of 18%, 9.8%, 9.4%, 9%, 5.7%, and 1.6% respectively. In general, the students’ English proficiency was still at the elementary level(59%), low intermediate level(30.7%), intermediate level(7%), and advanced level(3.3%). There was no positive and significant correlation between students’ learning styles and their English proficiency.

Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out the ability of students to use English collocation and its correlation with their academic achievements. The samples of this study are the 5th semester students of English education study program, UniversitasSriwijaya. Data were gathered by means of ability test using English collocation and academic achievements, GPA. The analysis results showed that there was a positive correlation between the ability of students to use English collocation and their academic achievements.
