Abstract

This article examines the evaluation of translation errors made by using online translation applications. Online translation applications are increasingly important for cross-language communication, but their quality often contains errors and defects. The research uses qualitative methods with a descriptive analysis approach, focusing on sixth-semester English students at the Indonesian Christian University of Toraja. The study consists of 10 Indonesian sentences translated into English using an online translation application. The results of semantic analysis show significant translation errors, including context-related errors, loss of nuance, and word choice errors. Inconsistencies in translation between sentences are also observed. The article emphasizes the importance of human skills in translation and double-checking translation results. It emphasizes the need for a deeper understanding of context and nuance. While online translation apps can be useful tools, careful and critical evaluation is still essential to ensure optimal quality in cross-language communication.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of a local wisdom-based English learning model in enhancing the English proficiency of fifth-grade students at SDN 11 Mengkendek, Tana Toraja, Indonesia. The model integrates Torajan cultural values into English instruction to provide students with meaningful and contextually relevant learning experiences. Employing a quantitative experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach, the study involved 23 participants selected through cluster sampling. Data were collected using an English proficiency test measuring vocabulary and sentence structure, while data analysis was conducted using PSPP software. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, and the calculation of effect size (r). Results revealed a significant improvement in students’ posttest scores (Z = −4.02, p = 0.000), with a very large effect size (r = 0.84), indicating that the model had a substantial pedagogical impact. The findings affirm that embedding local culture such as the Torajan values of kasianggaran, kasiuluran, and kasialamasean into English learning fosters stronger engagement, comprehension, and cultural identity. This study supports the principles of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) and highlights the importance of culturally responsive pedagogy in improving English education within Indonesia’s multicultural settings.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the correlation between the use of authentic videos in English language learning and the development of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) among university students. HOTS encompasses critical, creative, and analytical thinking skills, as well as problem-solving abilities. Authentic videos, such as films, news videos, and YouTube videos, are considered to offer real-world context that can aid students in developing these high-level thinking skills. This study employed a quantitative correlational research design to investigate the relationship between the use of authentic videos in English language learning and the development of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) among students.  The data were gathered via a questionnaire assessing students' perceptions of the use of authentic videos in relation to their thinking skills. The findings indicate a positive correlation between authentic video usage and context understanding, as well as an improvement in listening skills. However, YouTube videos, particularly those by non-educational content creators, showed a negative impact on HOTS development, especially in listening comprehension and context understanding. The study also found that gender and academic semester influenced the perception of video usage benefits, with female students and those in higher semesters reporting greater improvements in HOTS. This research highlights the effectiveness of using carefully selected and structured videos to enhance HOTS in English learning. It recommends that educators integrate a variety of relevant, engaging video content that aligns with learning objectives to foster critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. The study also encourages teachers to regularly evaluate the impact of video content on student engagement and academic progress to refine their teaching practices.
