Abstract

This study aims to deeply understand the role of academics in building the capacity of sustainable societies through service practices based on social reflection and local values. The research approach uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological design, which focuses on the meaning of the subjective experiences of the academics and the communities involved. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation of service activities in several communities in South Sulawesi over a six-month period. The results of the thematic analysis show three main themes, namely the transformation of the role of academics from instructors to social partners, the integration of local wisdom as a basis for sustainability, and critical reflection on the impact and value of service. These findings confirm that the success of community service is not only determined by the existence of the program, but by the quality of social relations and the co-learning process  between academics and the community. This research provides a theoretical contribution to the development of the concept of academic citizenship as well as a practical contribution to strengthening university policies in encouraging participatory, reflective, and sustainable community service.

Abstract

This research aims to explore and examine the role of Acehnese women throughout history, in the political, social, and cultural spheres, by positioning them as active subjects who contribute to the dynamics of society. This research is important because the history of Aceh shows the presence of prominent female figures, such as sultanahs, female scholars, and warriors, who made significant contributions to the sustainability of Acehnese society's identity and social structure. This research uses a qualitative method with a historical-interpretive approach that seeks to understand the traces of women's roles thru narrative analysis, archival documents, literature, and oral testimonies. Data was obtained thru in-depth literature studies of historical manuscripts, local chronicles, colonial archives, and semi-structured interviews with historians, academics, and community figures in Aceh who understand the role of women in local history. The research sample involved 12 key informants who were purposefully selected due to their involvement in historical studies or because of a strong oral tradition heritage in their environment. Data analysis was conducted by reducing information, presenting narratives, and thematic interpretations, resulting in a comprehensive picture of women's position in the historical trajectory of Aceh. The research findings indicate that Acehnese women are not only present in the domestic sphere but also play a significant role in political leadership, the fight against colonialism, and the transmission of cultural and religious values. This finding confirms that the history of Aceh cannot be fully understood without presenting the narrative of women as agents of change. This research contributes to enriching Indonesian historiography with a gender perspective and opens space for a more inclusive and equitable reinterpretation of history regarding women's contributions.

Abstract

This chapter examines the Cold War as a global ideological confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union and analyzes its role in shaping the political, economic, and social transformation of modern Europe. Following the end of World War II, the rivalry between liberal-capitalist and socialist-communist ideologies led to the emergence of a bipolar international system that divided the world into opposing blocs. Although direct military conflict between the two superpowers never occurred, the Cold War was characterized by intense political competition, military alliances, nuclear arms races, proxy wars, and technological rivalry, particularly in the field of space exploration. This study employs a qualitative historical and library research approach by analyzing secondary data derived from academic books, peer-reviewed journals, and credible historical documents. The analysis focuses on the background, processes, and impacts of the Cold War, including its influence on European modernization, global political structures, economic development, military strategies, and technological advancements. The findings indicate that the Cold War significantly accelerated scientific and technological progress while simultaneously generating political instability, economic disparities, and prolonged regional conflicts. The chapter also discusses the collapse of the Soviet Union as a critical turning point that marked the end of the Cold War and reshaped the global order. Reforms introduced through Glasnost and Perestroika revealed structural weaknesses within the Soviet system and ultimately led to its disintegration in 1991. Overall, the Cold War and the modernization of Europe represent interconnected historical processes that have profoundly influenced contemporary international relations and global development.
