Abstract

Waste treatment (WT) was one way to increase the income of small-scale goat farmers. Many factors influence breeders to adopt technology, including the subjective norm (SN) factor. This study aims to determine the effect of subjective norms (SN) consisting of the influence of informal leaders (IL), Family (F), extension (E) /Training Officer (TO), and peer groups (FG) or farmer neighbors (FN) on the behavior of farmers in feces waste treatment (WT). The research was carried out in West Sulawesi Province, precisely in Polman and the Majene Regencies, which were goat farming centers. The respondents were 50 in the Majene district and 100 in the Polman district. The determination of the sample was carried out randomly at the location of the goat breeding center (GBC). The research variable consisted of the behavior of farmers in adopting technology (AT), which consisted of five levels: feces disposed of (score 1), not processed and used alone (score 2), not processed and sold (score 3), processed and used alone (score 4). It was processed and sold (score 5). Independent variables consisted of subjective norms, including the Community Leader (CL) (X1), Family (F) (X2), Extension Workers (EW) or Technical Officers (X3), and Neighbors (N) or colleagues (C) influence (X4). The linear regression model was used to predict the F-test and t-test. The results showed that SN affects breeders’ behavior in processing goat livestock waste (GLW). The variable influence of EW, F, and N was a component of SN that influenced the behavior of breeders, to increase the adoption of WT technology, the role of EW must be increased in assisting farmers in adopting WT technology. Abstract

Abstract

Beef cattle farming in some areas is carried out by raising their own cattle and some raise cattle with a profit-sharing system or in Bugis Macassar culture known as tesang/teseng. Tesang is a profit-sharing pattern between the capital provider and the farmer. This study aims to determine the level of satisfaction of capital owners (ma'tesang) and breeders (pattesang) and capital owners (ma’tesang) in conducting a profit-sharing system and to determine the factors that affect the satisfaction of breeders (pattesang) in conducting a profit-sharing system. This study used a questionnaire to collect data in the form of the level of importance (expectations) and the level of performance (reality) experienced by each breeder measured based on the dimensions and indicators of measuring the level of satisfaction. The data were analyzed using the IPA (Importance Performance Analysis) and CSI (Customer Satisfaction Index) methods and multiple linear regression using SPSS. The results showed that based on IPA and CSI analysis the results obtained were the level of satisfaction of the capital owner was 85.57% and the breeder was 80.21%. So that based on the predetermined criteria index, the level of satisfaction of capital owners and breeders is on a scale of Very Satisfied with the profit-sharing system. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that overall farmers and capital owners are very satisfied in conducting tesang. Keywords: Capital Owner; Farmer; Satisfaction Level; Tesang.

Abstract

Rural development plays a crucial role in strengthening a nation’s economy, with the agricultural sector serving as a key driver of growth. Among its sub-sectors, the livestock industry, particularly cattle farming, requires continuous improvement. Barru Regency in South Sulawesi is recognized as a national center for beef cattle development and breeding; however, rural cattle farming in the area still faces challenges that threaten its sustainability. The Maiwa Breeding Center (MBC) represents an innovative cattle-breeding partnership program designed to empower smallholder farmers through sustainable business practices. This study employed a qualitative exploratory approach to analyze the implementation of social entrepreneurship elements within MBC’s Participatory Breeding Program. Data were obtained from 32 purposively selected informants through interviews, observations, and literature review. The results show that MBC demonstrates all key elements of social entrepreneurship: social value creation through increased farmer income and capacity; civil society built on trust, networks, and shared norms; social innovation in mentorship, profit-sharing, and marketing; and economic activity through business skill development, financial access, and product diversification. This study introduces a novel framework linking social entrepreneurship and sustainable livestock development, demonstrating how participatory breeding programs can effectively strengthen rural economies in tropical regions. Abstract

Polled Bali cattle (PBC) are Bali cattle that do not naturally have horns. This study aims to compare quantitative and qualitative characteristics of PBC found in Bone and Barru Regencies, South Sulawesi. This study was conducted from June 2024 to March 2025. The number of samples aged 12 - 24 months, for quantitative characteristics using 80 heads each in Bone (40 heads) and Barru (40 heads), with a ratio of 20 males and 20 females. The qualitative characteristics used in PBC in Bone (62 heads), and in Barru (39 heads). This study used an independent samples t-test for quantitative traits and descriptive analysis for qualitative traits. The results showed that for quantitative traits, there were significant differences in withers height and body length between males from Bone and Barru, with cattle from Bone having a larger size. However, no significant differences were found in heart girth and all morphometrics for females. For qualitative traits, there are a dominant light brown coat color, black eyelid, white ear hair, white lip edge on the edge, black mouth lash, white legs (stocking) with clear boundaries, black hoof, thick backline, small dewlap size, and polled. Although they have many similarities, there are differences in several qualitative traits such as switch of tail color, body color pattern, tail length, and rump patch color. These results provide useful information regarding the differences in body dimensions of PBC in both regions, which can be the basis for planning more effective breeding and maintenance strategies.

Abstract

Some cattle breeds that have evolved hornless versions include indigenous cattle. This research aimed to identify phenotypic and morphometric traits in Polled Bali cattle (PBC) as the indigenous cattle, this research is important for breed characterization. This study involved 165 heads of PBC, which included 60 males and 105 females. The lack of horns in PBC causes the interaction of the poll gene (P) and the scur gene (Sc). The PBC coat color is mainly reddish-brown (>40%), with black color on the hoof (>90%), switch of the tail (>68%), eyelid (>100%), and muzzle (>96%), with reddish-brown color on the mouth lash (>82%), and white color on legs (>50%), and rump patch (>50%). PBC are mainly humpless (100%), small on the dewlap size (100%), a thick line on the dorsal (>48%), and poll in males (82.76%), in females (52.27%), and scurs in males (17.24%) in females (47.73%). Net Replacement Rate (NRR) values were 145% (male) and 140% (female) and indicated that South Sulawesi Province was still capable of producing seed stock per year.
