Abstract

Abstract

Future predictions are meaningful for human life. This study aims to examine the effect of self-enhancement on the individual and authentic or unauthentic experiences that individuals have for predicting the future of their lives. In addition, this study is expected to enrich the literature on self-enhancement in Indonesia. This research using experimental method with design of random assignment 2 (self-enhancement: high vs low) x 2 (authenticity: authentic vs. not authentic) and between subjects. 120 participants were included in this study. ANOVA factorial analysis technique was used to see the differences in between tested groups. The results show that people with high self-enhancement have better results in future predictions than people with low self-enhancement. With a distant psychological distance, individuals will be more likely to have more positive predictions of the future, so the high or low level of one's self-enhancement does not impact the future scenario they make. Regardless of authentic or inauthentic experience, the results of this study show that most participants present their future picture optimistically.Furthermore, it is expected in subsequent research to increase the number of participants so that the experimental results can be analyzed more optimally.

Abstract

Eibach, Libby, and Gilovich’s (2003) experimental research suggested that people with less self-change awareness will perceive that their social worlds change more than do those who are more aware that they themselves are changing. This present review, based on two other studies, serves as a further research recommendation to expand their thesis. Social cognition experiments conducted by Cloutier and Macrae (2008) as well as by Hess and Pickett (2010) using the social memory paradigm indicated that if a person experiences: (1) personal disengagement (self-univolvement, i.e. his/her experience is chosen by others); and (2) social rejection, then he/she will be less aware of him/herself, and will remember more (or is more aware of) information regarding other people (others > self). Reversely, a person with: (1) self-involvement (i.e. selects his/her own experience); and (2) social acceptance experience, will be more aware of him/herself than of others (self > others) and will perceive the social world to change less. Based on those findings, the authors hypothesize that self-involvement and social rejection–as variables that influence the awareness of self (changes)–influence one’s perception of social changes. Some applications related to colonial mentality, as well as Bitcoin and blockchain technology, are presented as illustrations to elaborate the conjecture.

Abstract

This research proves that religiosity (Islamic totalism) is a predictor of conservative ideology, as is the need for cognitive closure and right wing authoritarian which has been proven as a psychological variable that affects conservative ideology. The ideology of conservatism emphasizes on the tendency to preserve what is already established, resist change and maintain existing orders whether social, economic, legal, religious, political, or cultural (Jost, Glaser, Kruglanski, & Sulloway, 2003). This research utilized a quantitative survey method. Participants of this study were 528 college students from Jakarta with multiple regression analysis. The results obtained are 1) Islamic totalism, cognitive closure and right wing authoritarian are social and economic conservatism predictors; 2) only Islamic totalism is a religious conservatism predictor; 3) Islamic totalism has the greatest influence on social, economic and religious conservatives.

Abstract

Two philosophical perspectives on the good life, namely hedonic and eudaimonic, have become references for experts to explain how people understand happiness in Western societies with individualistic culture and the majority of Christians. This descriptive phenomenological study aimed to understand the happiness experiences of a collectivistic Muslim society. The participants in this study were nine Muslims, consists of male and female who were known as religious persons by their relatives. The results of data analysis shows that happiness for a Muslim is a process that provides experiences in overcoming problems and life's trials based on religious guidance. These experiences lead participants to a meaning of happiness as shown by three main themes, namely a sense of being able to overcome problems with acceptance and gratitude, life satisfaction in sufficiency, and a sense of worth for the accomplishment with hard work. The results of this study explain that happiness is a dynamic process that is greatly influenced by persons' understanding and belief in religion.

Abstract

The absence of children in marriage has some impact on the couple. Empirical studies showed a different result, one is that it brings out a positive impact, and another says the other side. This discrepancy leads to the question of what causes that contradictive finding. This study is aimed to explore the lived experience of involuntary childlessness and determine the context of that experience. In order to get the whole understanding of the experience, this study is using the depth interview method with a phenomenological principle. Participants of this study are 11 involuntary childless who have married for at least 3 years. Results show 8 themes that describe the experience of involuntary childlessness, including positive and negative experience, acceptance, spousal, social and spiritual relationship, conflict, and marital evaluation. The context that determines the experience is the relationship with the spouse, family, community, and the spiritual matter of the couple.
