Abstract

Along with the increasing incidence of bullying in the school environment, it is necessary to conduct an in-depth study on how to suppress the incidence of bullying. Bystander bullying is known to have an important role in suppressing bullying, especially when the bystander shows behavior to help and defend the victim. Previous studies have found that the perceived sense of school safety is related to the tendency of students to help victims of bullying. This study wants to look further into the relationship between school safety and bystander bullying responses by comparing the context of rural and urban schools. This study predicts that rural school students tend to be more willing to help victims, regardless of their perception of a school safety. A total of 109 high school students in the Jakarta and surrounding areas, which consist of 75 rural school students and 34 urban school students, participated in this study by filling out a series of questionnaires that measured school safety and the tendency to respond to bullying incidence. The results of this study show that rural school students tend to be more willing to help victims of bullying than urban school students. In addition, it was found that there was no relationship between perceptions of school safety and the tendency to help victims of bullying in rural and urban schools. The results of this study have implications in determining the appropriate intervention between rural and urban schools in encouraging students to be more willing to help victims of bullying

Abstract

Abstract

Today, one of the growing sport activities in Indonesia is dancing. As a new sport, dancing is lack of athlete who is able to represent Indonesia in international dancing competitions. This happens because dancing has been labeled as an expensive sport (Zadli, 2009). In fact, the qualification to become a dancer is strong physical and mental capability gained from regular and consistent trainings. One of the factors which may encourage someone to take regular trainings is motivation. A study conducted by Li et. al. (Batia, 2007) reveals that motivation may regulate desire and consistency to take regular trainings. Motivation types based on self-determination continuum are called behavior regulation. Ryan and Brown (in Magnus, 2007) mention that motivation type or behavior regulation is influenced by self-esteem, which is an aspect of self-concept. Hence, if self-esteem affects behavior regulation, self-concept may indirectly influence behavior regulation. The result of this study shows that there is no significant relationship between self-concept and behavior regulation in dancing because each respondent has different competition experience, and respondents hold a high self-concept. Thus, the respondent's motivation to practice dancing is not caused by high self-concept.

Abstract

Several studies have shown that perspective taking may increase perceived similarity between two people via increased self-other overlap. However, there are reasons to doubt the efficacy of perspective taking, particularly due to the difficulty in leaving one’s own perspective to view the world from another’s. In two experiments, we tested the efficacy of perspective taking on increasing perceived similarity and, failing that, proposed a different method that may be more effective in increasing perceived similarity. The first study focused on perspective taking and was done with 95 participants (74% women) with a between-subjects design. The second study examined the effect of imagined contact with 59 participants (76% women) with a within-subjects design. The first experiment showed that perspective taking does not significantly affect perceived similarity, t(94) = -.10, p = .92, while imagined contact increases perceived similarity, t(58) = -2.54, p < .05. These experiments show that perspective taking does not improve perceived similarity, whereas imagined contact does increase perceived similarity. Practical implications are also discussed.

Abstract

Self-image in general is an important part of humans. Having an ideal body shape according to the perceptions and norms that develop in society is usually a standard condition to be considered to be attractive. Self-image view is closely related to body image; mental picture of a person, cognitive and emotional assessments of himself, and approximately other people's judgments about the shape and size of his body. A positive body image is a multifaceted construct that is not simple so that it is not only a target of self-criticism but also an attitude of respect and self-acceptance which is called body appreciation. The purpose of this study was to find out the role of sociocultural influences and self-compassion on individual body appreciation and the presumption of the role of social appearance comparison variables as mediators between self-compassion and body appreciation. Participant were individuals aged 20-40 years consisting of 84 women. This research was conducted using multiple regression analysis. The results of the analysis, self-compassion contributed 21.7% to body appreciation and the proof of social appearance comparison mediated partially the relationship between self-compassion and body appreciation.

Abstract

Happiness is a state that is constantly strived for amidst the complexity of life. Previous research suggests that the student population is prone to psychological problems due to high workloads and a scarce resource of time that could affect happiness. Referring to previous studies, this study seeks to examine the relationship between feelings of awe and subjective well-being which is influenced by perceptions of time availability and perceived workload. Data were collected offline (N = 56) using VR devices to present awe-inducing videos, with responses measured via self-report. The results showed the absence of video effects on the condition of awe towards time availability (b = 0.118, p = 0.216), a positive and significant relationship was found between time availability and subjective well-being (b = 0.278, p = b = 0.412, p =
