Abstract

Common Written Errrors of English Department Students in IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro. Writing is still considered to be the most difficult skill to master as it combines ideas getting, grammatical structures, vocabulary, and mechanics. Producing good written English is an essential and required skill for English Department Students. This study examines the common errors in written English produced by the students of English Department in IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro. The error analysis on writing aims at giving the English teacher or lecturer data about common written errors and arousing the students to be more confident and enthusiastic in producing good writing by giving them correction symbols. Data were collected from narrative and descriptive texts written by the students of class 2C of English Department in IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro. The errors are analyzed in ten categories which use ten correction symbols, they are: 1) S (spelling), WO (word order), G (grammar), T (tense), C (concord), ! (missing things), WW (wrong word), [ ] (unnecessary things), ?M (unclear meaning), and P (punctuation). The overall results indicate that the most errors the students made were grammar mistakes and unnecessary things. On the contrary, the students made the least errors in word order. It was also found that the students made errors in the rest categories including spelling, tenses, concord, missing things, wrong words, unclear meaning, and punctuation.Key words: common errors, written English, correction symbols, descriptive qualitative.

Abstract

Mathematic problems often become obstacles to the students of ICP (International Class Program) schools in Indonesia, including the elementary school level. They cannot understand sentences presented in mathematic problems because they have constraints in the mathematical vocabulary. To overcome this problem, this research under the experimental design conducted experiments on using Ezzlemath (English Puzzle for Mathematics) for assisting the students’ reading comprehension upon mathematic problems. By having fun in doing a puzzle and repeated words filled in the puzzle, the students of elementary school level of ICP design can have more exposure to mathematical vocabulary. The researchers involved 12 students of grade 5A as the experimental group and 17 students of grade 5B as the control group. The research results demonstrated that Ezzlemath gave significant effects to the students’ reading comprehension of mathematic problems.

Abstract

Abstract : The Pancasila student profile is a translation of Indonesia's national education goals to build the character and competence of students. Global diversity is one dimension of the Pancasila student profile. This dimension has four elements and 11 sub-elements. In elements 1) knowing and appreciating the culture and 2) communication and interaction between cultures, English plays an important role because these two elements contain a global or international context. By applying a mixed method and taking as many as 100 research subjects from three study programs (PPKn, Economics Education, and English Language Education) at a private university in Bojonegoro Regency in November 2022, this study aims to investigate students' perceptions of the role of English for strengthening global diversity in the profiles of Pancasila students. Data on the students’ perceptions were collected by distributing questionnaires and conducting interviews. Students' positive perceptions of English will accelerate the competency achievement of Pancasila student profiles on the global diversity dimension. The results of the study indicated that students have positive and negative perceptions of English. However, they have a positive perception of the role of English in strengthening the global diversity dimension in the profiles of Pancasila students. University plays vital roles in developing the positive students’ perceptions. Keywords: Pancasila student profile, global diversity, student’s perception Abstrak: Profil pelajar Pancasila merupakan bentuk penerjemahan tujuan pendidikan nasional Indonesia untuk membangun karakter serta kompetensi peserta didik.

Abstract

Project-Based Learning (PjBL) has really caught on in higher education. It gets students more involved and helps them pick up the crucial 21st-century skills. In terms of Translation course, research on how project-based activities actually impact students’ learning is still limited. We took a group of English Department students and had them create bilingual storybooks for kids as their project. The students translated stories they made from Indonesian to English and designed storybooks, paying close attention to language accuracy, cultural fit, and what young readers need. We investigated what the students actually got out of this experience, how it affected their learning, literacy, and life skills. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, we focused on the third-year students in a Translation course. We watched them in class, looked over the storybooks they made, and read their reflections on the project. They produced eleven bilingual storybooks, which we analyzed for recurring themes. This project really boosted the students’ critical thinking and creativity, especially when they had to solve tricky translation problems or tweak stories to fit a new audience. Working in groups made them better at collaborating and communicating as they had to negotiate and make decisions together. They sharpened their information, media, and tech skills by using digital tools and design platforms. The project helped them grow in other ways too, building flexibility, initiative, leadership, productivity, and social skills. Project-Based Learning is not just another teaching trend, it actually supports well-rounded learning in Translation courses for English Department students.
