Abstract

Background: Gypsum is a material widely utilized in dental medicine for imprinting study models in prosthesis manufacturing. Dimensional stability is a crucial requirement for achieving optimal gypsum imprints. The addition of potassium sulfate to type III gypsum may serve as a solution to enhance dimensional stability. This study aims to compare the dimensional  stability values of type  III gypsum with  the  addition of 4% potassium sulfate against type III gypsum without the addition of potassium sulfate.Methode: This research employs an experimental design with a post-test-only control group. A total of 32 specimens were produced using gypsum molds in accordance with ADA no. 19. The specimens were divided into two groups: the first group consisting of type III gypsum with added potassium sulfate, and the second group comprising type III gypsum without added potassium sulfate. Data were subjected to non-paired parametric t-tests.Result: The mean value for the type III gypsum group without potassium sulfate addition was 0.0288±0.00052%, while the mean value for the type III gypsum group with potassium sulfate addition was 0.0058±0.00040%. The non-paired t-test results revealed a p-value of 0.000.Conclussion: Based on the conducted research, the addition of potassium sulfate to type III gypsum resulted in enhanced dimensional stability.

Abstract

The results of the Basic Health Research (2018) stated that the Indonesian population with oral problems aged 55-64 years was 61.9% and aged 65 years was 54.2%. Some changes in teeth and oral cavity that are often found in the elderly are tooth loss which results in impaired food digestion, pain / pain in the teeth due to periodontal tissue and root caries, reduced vertical dimensions of artificial teeth, gingivitis and various other abnormalities. It is hoped that after being given oral health education through an innovation program in the form of a stroke elderly companion link or what is called “LIPSIAS” can increase the knowledge of stroke elderly on how to maintain their oral health through the help of a companion so that it can have a good influence on their dental hygiene. Research Objectives: Producing a dental and oral health maintenance program through empowering elderly companions in the form of the LIPSIAS Application as a medium for promoting oral health in the Elderly Social Service Home. Using Quantitative methods with pre-experiment research design (one group pretest and posttest design). The sampling technique was purposive sampling consisting of 14 elderly stroke at the Elderly Social Services Home. Results: The results of the statistical test showed P value 0.05, meaning that there was a significant difference in the knowledge of dental and oral health maintenance of stroke elderly before and after being given the LIPSIAS application intervention. Before treatment, the average value of knowledge of stroke elderly was 4.07 (poor category) increased to 8 (good category). The LIPSIAS application is effective in increasing the knowledge of stroke elderly about how to maintain oral health through companion assistance

Abstract

Self-medication is an act of self-treatment performed by the community to overcome toothache. Many people who suffer from toothache choose to self-medicate with pain killers or herbal medicines. The phenomenon of self-medication arose because people felt that self-medication was an easier and more practical option than going to the dentist. The aim of the study was to determine the factors that influence the self-medication behaviour of patients with toothache in the community. The research method used was descriptive observational with a cross-sectional approach. The population in this study was the community of Batudaa district, and the sample was taken through accidental sampling method using questioner by google form. The results showed that majority of the respondents (91.66%) had practiced self-medication, 33.97% of them used chemical drugs while 41.02% combined chemical and herbal drugs. Mefenamic acid was the most commonly purchased analgesic from the pharmacy (33.97%), while saline solution was the most commonly used herbal medicine (42.94%). The main reason for self-medication by respondents was convenience and practicality (33.33%), followed by experience of recovery with the same medicine (30.76%), and several other reasons were given by respondents. This study found that personal knowledge and previous experience by themselves or peers significantly influenced the choice of medication, including easier, quicker and can be done by themselves, save cost, time and can return to activities immediately. The conclusion of this study emphasises that self-medication behaviour is influenced by convenience and practicality factors, with recommendations for the community to increase knowledge about the use of analgesics and to consult medical personnel before initiating any medication regimen and symptoms do not improve.

Abstract

Abstract

Oral health issues are prevalent among the elderly due to physiological aging, which often leads to decreased oral muscle function and impairs essential activities such as mastication, swallowing, and salivary secretion. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of oral stimulation exercises in improving these oral functions in elderly individuals. A pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design was conducted involving 28 elderly participants in Pedalangan Village, Semarang, Indonesia. Participants received regular oral stimulation exercises, and assessments were made before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test for normality, with paired sample t-tests and Wilcoxon tests applied accordingly. The results demonstrated significant improvements in salivary flow rate (p = 0.018), swallowing function (p = 0.000), and mastication ability (p = 0.004). These findings suggest that oral stimulation exercises are an effective non-pharmacological strategy to enhance oral functions among the elderly, potentially improving their overall health and quality of life.
