Abstract

Pollen is a microscopic spore that plays a crucial role in the reproduction of seed plants. Pollen management has significant benefits, especially in hybrid seed production, but its viability tends to decline during storage. This study aims to determine the best medium for pollen germination in ten different plant species, namely starfruit, pumpkin, papaya, durian, bougainvillea, four o'clock flower, sweet potato, butterfly flower, chili, and eggplant. The research method used two media: Brewbacker and Kwack (BK) and Pollen Germination Medium (PGM), with two observation times (2 hours and 4 hours). The results showed that the BK medium was suitable for sweet potato and eggplant pollen, while the PGM medium was suitable for starfruit, pumpkin, bougainvillea, and butterfly flower pollen. Meanwhile, durian and four o'clock flower pollen were able to germinate in both media. The differences in pollen germination ability were influenced by genotype, flower age, as well as temperature and humidity. This study confirms that selecting the appropriate germination medium affects pollen viability, which in turn influences the success of pollination and fruit production.

Abstract

Nematodes are soil organisms that play an essential role in agricultural ecosystems, both as plant pathogens and soil health indicators. Non-parasitic nematodes or free-living nematodes play an essential role in soil food webs. This study aims to analyze the diversity and population of non-parasitic nematodes in Piper nigrum L. from various pepper accessions on Bangka Island. soil samples taken from seven locations and extracting nematodes using centrifugation flotation techniques. Nematodes were identified based on morphological characteristics by using a stereo and binocular microscopes and validated to the nematode identification keybook. The population of identified nematodes was calculated using the absolute population calculation formula. The results showed variations of non-parasitic nematodes in each location, which were influenced by environmental factors and types of pepper accessions. The most dominant population of identified nematodes was classified as Rhabditidae with 92.42%, Mononchidae, and Aphelenchus avenae (92.42%). The nematode population in Lampung Daun Lebar accession was 41 individuals, Lampung Daun Kecil (17), Nyelungkup (9), and Merapin (healthy control) 65 individuals. Non-parasitic nematodes have roles as bacterivores (soil bacteria eaters), fungivores (soil fungus eaters), predators of parasitic nematodes, and decomposers in the soil.

Abstract

The management of paper money in mosque donation boxes has been done manually, which can lead to delays in recording and the risk of discrepancies in the amount of money. To address this issue, an Internet of Things (IoT) based system has been designed that can automatically count, record, and monitor the incoming paper money in the donation box. This system aims to facilitate the mosque committee in managing incoming funds more efficiently, transparently, and accountably. This system uses several key components such as a paper money detection sensor, a microcontroller, a solenoid to control the mechanism for money entry, an LCD screen to display the nominal amount, and IoT connectivity for real-time data transmission. When money is inserted, the sensor will read the nominal amount, activate the solenoid to direct the money to the storage, and automatically record the transaction data. This information is then sent.

Abstract

Rice plants typically grow in paddy fields, but they can also be cultivated in dryland areas, known as upland rice. This study aims to examine the effect of applying the micronutrient boron on the growth and morphological characteristics of two rice varieties, IPB 3S and IPB 9G, conducted at the Leuwikopo experimental field of IPB using the legowo planting system. The treatments consisted of four combinations: no boron application on IPB 9G and IPB 3S varieties, and boron application on both varieties. Boron was applied at a concentration of 20 ppm through foliar spraying on the lower leaf surface three times during the growing period. Observations were made on plant characteristics, including leaf shape and position, plant height, number of tillers, flowering age, panicle exertion, and grain characteristics. Based on the results, it can be concluded that rice grain filling is influenced by pollen production and viability, which can increase the percentage of filled seeds and seed production. However, the production results in this study could not be analyzed due to bird pest attacks, which resulted in the absence of harvest data. Therefore, further research is recommended with more optimal plant protection to accurately obtain seed production data.

Abstract

Hydroponics is a method of cultivation without soil, but instead utilizes nutrient-rich mineral solutions containing essential elements. This community service activity aims to improve students' skills in creating and maintaining simple hydroponic systems at SMAN 1 Pemali, particularly within the Green Bee extracurricular group. A total of 30 students participated in this activity. The method used in this activity involved socialization and training on simple hydroponics, specifically the wick system. In this activity, in addition to direct practice, students actively engaged in discussions and asked questions, demonstrating their enthusiasm and curiosity about hydroponic plant cultivation. The results of this community service activity include increased knowledge among the students of SMAN 1 Pemali regarding the preparation of hydroponic tools and materials, the preparation of growing media, the planting process of hydroponic pakcoy vegetables, and the monitoring and evaluation of simple hydroponics. The pakcoy plants in the wick system hydroponic produced during practice were distributed to students of SMAN 1 Pemali as a form of appreciation. This activity also raised awareness about the importance of utilizing limited space and recycled materials for plant cultivation through hydroponics. This opportunity has the potential to serve as a foundation for future entrepreneurial ventures.
