Abstract

Gender is a crucial topic to explore especially in education context because it will affect the students’ understanding in a real life or around their society. It can not be denied if in textbook includes material which contains gender bias. Gender issues in the previous studies still depict gender stereotypes and biases, but some studies depict the positive images of gender. The present study examines through visual and verbal artifacts on ELT textbooks used in vocational high school and looks from gender roles. Using Fairclough’s (1995) model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as a method. The reveal showed that gender roles on the materials still depict gender biases however some gender discourse represent positive images. From this research suggests that the textbooks author must pay attention for developing materials in the textbooks.

Abstract

The effect of globalization in all sectors of life will impact on the moral degradation of the Indonesian students. It is due to the fact that it is easy for students to imitate cultural behaviors from other countries through social media that are difficult to be controlled by parents and teachers. School children who are still immature in mind may easily adopt the fast spread of information from different parts of the world regardless of whether or not they are appropriate with the Indonesian culture. Culturally, what is considered good behaviors in one country may not be accepted in other countries or vice versa. Therefore, the inclusion of moral education (character education) in Indonesia is crucial to avoid students’ misconception of moral values and to direct students’ behaviors in appropriate ways.

Abstract

The use of computer media by teachers for the benefit of teaching is something that is often encountered. With the character of open computer media, teachers can access all information. Of course, the information obtained will have the potential to influence the teacher's mindset or the teacher's perspective on something related to education. Therefore, this study aims to find out the roles of computer media in EFL teachers' mindset on teaching. This study used a narrative inquiry research design and used semi-structured interviews with two EFL teachers in Jember to obtain data. The data obtained was analyzed using thematic analysis and succeeded in finding the roles of computer media, including managing time, improving quality of instruction, encouraging active classes, controlling assignments, providing innovation, and tools for interaction. This study also found teachers' opinions about teaching EFL with and without computer media. It can be concluded that the roles of computer media facilitate the teaching of English. Therefore, the teacher assumes that computer media helps teachers in teaching and makes teachers more creative and varied when teaching.

Abstract

Researching my set induction skill during teaching practicum program is essential because it is the crucial step that could determine the success of teaching and learning process. Interesting set-induction could help students focus on the topic to be learned, connect their prior knowledge with the new topic, and motivate them learn the materials. In this research, I did self-reflective study on how I developed my set-induction skill. I accomplished this research by videotaping my teaching performance, and continued by writing self-reflective journal based on the video. I analyzed the data using thematic analysis. The analysis revealed 5 themes, i.e., gaining students’ attention, building students’ motivation, assessing students’ prior knowledge. providing content overview, and determining students’ expectation. It is suggested that teachers videotape their teaching performance and do critical reflection based on the recorded video to plan better teaching performance.

Abstract

Abstract The objectives of this research were to find the causes of Indonesian EFL learners’ writing anxiety and how they cope with writing anxiety at one of the state junior high schools located in the rural area of Banyuwangi. In this study, the researcher employed a qualitative approach by conducting semi-structured interviews with the five participants who potential experienced in writing anxiety. The findings of this study revealed that the causes of writing anxiety were internal cause, external causes, and linguistic causes. The internal causes include psychological sources. External causes include: (1) classroom practices and (2) interpersonal threats. While, lingusictic cause include writing aspects. In addition, the strategies that the Indonesian EFL learners use to cope with writing anxiety was categorized into a theme named strategies to cope writing anxiety.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate what and how moral values portrayed in a non-governmental EFL textbook for junior high school students for grade 8. The present study applied critical discourse analysis (CDA), framed in Fairclough’s three dimensional approaches to analyze visual, textual, and multimodal texts materials that represent the moral values in the textbook. The findings showed that Religiosity has the most frequently moral values found in the textbook, which is represented 36 times through different images, texts, and multimodal texts. Followed by the frequency of Nationalism and Helping each other took in a second place that represented moral values in the textbook, whereas the values of Integrity and Independence has the least frequently found in the textbook. Despite the potential imbalance in quantity, it can be inferred that this English textbook remains suitable for teaching the character education values to the students, since the textbook contains all five core moral values that recommended by the Indonesian government under the PPK program.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the politeness maxims in the government published ELT textbook for Senior High School student. According to Geoffrey Leech's (1983) politeness principle includes six maxims: tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim. Every maxims has its own purpose so it is necessary for the teacher to understand about each purpose of the maxims. The researcher gathered the dialogues which provide information about maxims of politeness which is represented in the textbook. Textbooks are standard books for instructional purposes which supports the teaching and learning process (Tarigan, 1986: 13). There are some previous researches in using textbook as the instrument. However, mostly the previous researchers are interested in moral value, gender equality, cultural elements and etc. Therefore, in order to explore the use of politeness principle inside a textbook, the researcher interested in conducted a study based on Geoffrey Leech’s six maxims theory in an English Textbook for Senior High School students.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate how religious tolerance portrayed in ELT textbook for senior high school students for grade 10. The present study applied critical discourse analysis (CDA), framed in fairclough’s 3D model approaches in analyzing visual and textual artifact materials that represents the religious tolerance in the textbook. The findings showed that religious tolerance has very rare found in the textbook, which is represented 6 times through different images and oral text. The visual and textual data of religious tolerance contained in each textbook unit have been identified using the categories of fairness (F), respect (R1), and reasonableness (R2). The findings showed that there is still a lack of visual and verbal representation of religious tolerance in the textbook.

Abstract

Generators that use permanent magnets do not require initial excitation to produce voltage. where the generator design is an axial flux type using a ceramic type permanent magnet (NdFeB), and uses two flanking stator rotors. For electricity use, the AC voltage is changed to DC voltage using a rectifier for charging the accumulator. The air gap in an axialflux generator is the distance between the rotor and stator. The air gap is also a place for the magnetic field to move through the coils in the stator which ultimately produces a magnetic flux value which will influence the amount of induced voltage produced. The faster the rotation produced, the greater the voltage produced, but the frequency value will also increase, so that this generator is only limited to 400 rpm rotation, at a frequency value of 50 Hz, producing an effective voltage of ± 22 V with an air gap distance ( δ) is 2 mm, the frequency measurement has an error of 10-20 Hz and an error percentage of 5-10%, with the results of the induced current measurement having the same voltage

Abstract

Changes in English language learning experienced by students after the pandemic can elicit a range of academic emotions. These emotional changes can be due to the environment and different learning atmospheres. The existence of these emotional changes will also have an impact on students’ academic achievement. Therefore, this study aims to examine the academic emotions of high-achieving students of junior high school learning English after the Covid-19 pandemic and how they affect students’ effectiveness in learning English. Using a descriptive case study research design to explore students' academic emotions, the research revealed the existence of four types of academic emotions: achievement, epistemic, topic, and social emotions. Each type was accompanied by positive and negative experiences. The positive emotions such as happiness, enjoyment and confidence can be caused by their enthusiasm and interest in learning, which closely related to the achievement obtained. Inversely related to the negative emotions, they tend to feel bad when they do not like something done during offline learning.
