Abstract

This study examines the role of Islamic feminist and state feminist discourses in Pakistan’s gender law reforms between 2006 and 2023. It is based on close reading of statutory texts and critical engagement with secondary scholarship on legislative processes. The analysis identifies distinct ways in which reform was justified in legal and policy debates. Islamic feminist discourse relied on Quranic reinterpretation to legitimate women’s rights within religious frameworks. State feminist discourse emphasized state protection, governance responsibilities, and international norms. Across cases, the two frameworks converged around shared policy objectives but diverged in their epistemological foundations. Debates over the Protection of Women (Criminal Law Amendment) Act 2006 reflected both religious and institutional rationales. Domestic violence legislation exposed tensions between family preservation and individual rights. The findings suggest that legal change in Pakistan requires navigating multiple sources of authority. Neither discourse alone was sufficient to secure reform. The study contributes to the scholarship on gender law reform in Muslim-majority contexts by showing how competing discourses both enable and limit legislative outcomes.

Abstract

This study explores the intersections of divine femininity and Islamic mysticism in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust and West-östlicher Divan [West–Eastern Divan], positioning these canonical works as fertile ground for intercultural literary inquiry and postcolonial English Language Teaching (ELT). Employing hermeneutic, intertextual, and comparative literary methods, this research uncovers Goethe’s engagement with Sufi metaphysics, the Qur’an, and Persian poetic traditions—particularly his intertextual dialogue with Hafiz and the implicit spiritual kinship with Islamic thinkers such as Rabiah al-Adawiyah and Muhammad Iqbal. Central to this inquiry is Goethe’s concept of the Ewig-Weibliche [Eternal Feminine], which, when read through Islamic mystical lenses, reveals a syncretic spiritual vision that transcends Orientalist binaries and patriarchal norms. The paper argues that integrating these texts into ELT pedagogy encourages both aesthetic appreciation and critical intercultural understanding—especially within postcolonial, Muslim-majority contexts like Indonesia. By reinterpreting canonical Western literature through Islamic and gender-inclusive frameworks, this study contributes to both Goethean scholarship and transformative, decolonial approaches to literary pedagogy.

Abstract

This study explores the extent to which artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology contributes to vocabulary retention and student engagement in English language learning at the primary school level in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were gathered from seven primary school English teachers through open-ended questionnaires. Thematic analysis was used to identify key patterns in their responses. Findings indicate that AI-based learning tools, such as gamified applications and educational chatbots, play a pivotal role in enhancing students’ vocabulary memorization by offering visual stimuli, instant feedback, and personalized learning experiences. Additionally, the integration of AI fosters greater student participation and motivation by making learning more interactive and engaging. Despite these benefits, several challenges were reported, including limited access to digital infrastructure, unstable internet connectivity, and insufficient teacher training in technology integration. Teachers also expressed concerns about the potential decline in students’ social interaction due to overreliance on AI. Nevertheless, respondents conveyed optimism regarding AI's long-term potential to support adaptive and differentiated learning for young learners. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on educational technology by presenting empirical evidence from primary classrooms. It also offers recommendations for stakeholders to address infrastructure and training gaps to ensure equitable and effective AI integration in language education. The implications are especially relevant as digital transformation policies in education gain momentum globally.

Abstract

This exploratory cross-sectional, cross-national study examined early childhood teachers' attitudes toward gender-neutral pedagogical practices in Indonesia and Pakistan. Structured interviews were conducted with 80 teachers (40 per country) working with children aged 3–6 years. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling from urban early childhood education centers. Attitudes toward gender-neutral pedagogical practices were operationalized across four dimensions: gender-inclusive language, mixed-gender participation, non-stereotyped learning materials, and balanced behavioral expectations. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-tests, and multiple regression analyses. Indonesian teachers reported higher attitude scores across all dimensions, with moderate to very large effect sizes (Cohen’s d = 0.45–1.10). Educational attainment (β = .28) and participation in professional development (β = .31) were positively associated with teachers’ attitudes. The model explained 42% of the variance in attitudes (R² = .42, adjusted R² = .39). The findings indicate that higher formal qualifications and participation in professional development are associated with more favorable attitudes toward non-stereotyped classroom practices within the sampled early childhood settings.

Abstract

Social class remains a central theme in literature and film, reflecting persistent inequalities in human relations. While most studies on Jane Austen’s Emma (2020) emphasize adaptation, gender, or historical settings, limited research has explored how class hierarchy operates ideologically in Autumn de Wilde’s 2020 film adaptation. Addressing this gap, the present study examines the invisible barriers of class in Emma (2020) through a Marxist framework. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, ten selected scenes were analyzed to reveal how clothing, marriage arrangements, and social interactions construct class distinctions. The findings indicate that Emma Woodhouse, representing the bourgeoisie, exercises ideological and cultural authority over Harriet Smith’s decisions, while Harriet’s compliance exemplifies lower-class subordination. Visual markers such as costumes and rituals like dances further reinforce symbolic hierarchies that sustain inequality. This study contributes a novel perspective by integrating Marxist theory with visual and narrative analysis to uncover how cultural and symbolic capital perpetuate class domination. The results highlight the film’s critical value for cultural and film studies, offering insights into how class ideology continues to shape representations of power and privilege in modern adaptations of classic works.

Abstract

This study examines how official heritage tourism promotion constructs gendered cultural narratives within the Borobudur–Prambanan cultural region. Heritage tourism promotion is not treated merely as destination marketing, but as a representational arena where cultural identity, historical authority, authenticity, and social visibility are selectively produced. Using a qualitative interpretive design and Critical Discourse Analysis, the study analyzes 87 text–image units from state-linked tourism platforms, including Borobudur, Prambanan, Ramayana Ballet, and Central Java tourism materials. The analysis focuses on seven categories: visibility and invisibility, gender roles, narrative voice, descriptive language, symbolic positioning, agency versus passivity, and cultural authority. The findings reveal that women are frequently visible in promotional images as dancers, artisans, performers, and symbolic markers of tradition, yet their visibility rarely translates into narrative authority. Men, by contrast, are more often associated with historical explanation, institutional voice, ritual legitimacy, and interpretive knowledge. Female-coded cultural practices are commonly commodified through aesthetic spectacle, costume, bodily performance, and emotional atmosphere, while male-coded heritage elements retain intellectual, historical, and spiritual prestige. The study concludes that official heritage tourism promotion reproduces a gendered hierarchy of cultural representation by separating visual presence from cultural authority. More equitable promotional practice requires naming female cultural practitioners, recognizing their knowledge, and presenting women not only as cultural symbols but also as interpreters, transmitters, and authoritative subjects of heritage. This finding highlights the need for heritage tourism institutions to develop more inclusive promotional narratives that acknowledge women’s cultural agency, expertise, and authority in sustaining living heritage traditions.
