Abstract

Reading is regarded as an essential activity in language learning, providing a valuable source of information, an exciting activity, a tool of communication, and a way to enhance one's knowledge. Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) is implemented in reading classes to enhance students' reading comprehension. The present study aimed to find out the correlation between students’ perceptions of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) projects and their reading achievement. The participants of the study were 165 students of the second semester batch 2022/2023 taking a Reading Course in one of public universities in East Java Indonesia. The current study employed correlational design and the data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of four dimensions with 20 items adapted from Fan (2010). The dimensions were students’ general perceptions of CSR instruction, perceptions of implementation procedures of CSR, and views on their learning attitudes in CSR. The data on the students’ reading achievement were obtained through their TOEIC reading test, CSR project, midterm test, and final test scores. The data taken from students' perceptions of CSR and reading achievement were analyzed through Pearson Correlation coefficient. The result shows that the correlation between students’ perceptions of CSR and their reading achievement are highly significant. CSR encourages students to get involved actively in reading activities and increase their critical thinking to comprehend texts. Such experiences are beneficial for them which affect their perceptions of CSR towards their reading achievement.

Abstract

The use of technology in learning is not only a necessity but also a requirement for creating more creative, critical, innovative, and communicative learning. The integration of AI in learning changes the paradigm of teachers from being instructors to facilitators, collaborators, mentors, coaches, guides, and learning companions who can train students to become independent and responsible learners. However, this is hindered by the imbalance in teachers' knowledge regarding the use of technology in developing teaching materials. This Community Service Activity aims to provide guidance on the use of technology in developing English language teaching materials for English teachers at vocational high schools in Banyuwangi Regency, East Java. Teachers will participate in a three-month program for the development of English teaching materials, which includes the stages of needs analysis, training, guidance, and evaluation of activities.

Abstract

This research has the objective of describing the learning perceptions and experiences of students of the Agro Eco Technology Study Program while attending the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course that is organized with the mode of hybrid learning. The students who became the subject of this research were those who study at the Kediri campus of Universitas Brawijaya. They are freshmen who had previously for two years experienced full online learning while studying in senior high school. This research used a mixed method, meaning applying both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data are in the form of survey results and of interview results with several related parties, observations, and other relevant documents. Research results indicated that student perceptions regarding ESP learning were that it is able to improve the English language competence of students. Students found that the learning environment of ESP with hybrid learning was interesting, encouraging, enjoyable, accommodating of active participation, and not at all awkward. In addition, the opportunity given by the lecturer to students to show their work orally by uploading videos to a YouTube channel with the ‘everybody is a YouTuber’ program became a point that is perceived as able to encourage the students. They have positive responses about statements on the issues of attitude, of ease, of aspects of benefits, and of English language skills. The Internet connection that is sometimes unstable only became a minor hindrance. HIGHLIGHTS: In hybrid learning, the group of students who learned in the synchronous online class were all actively participating in learning by always turning on their cameras. They were proud when the lecturer compared them to the students of the main campus of Universitas Brawijaya at City of Malang. Students had the opinion that hybrid learning for ESP was conducted in a quite relaxed and not awkward manner. This was even perceived to be easygoing at times. The lecturer initiated the ‘everybody is a YouTuber’ program for the students to take advantage of YouTube to show their oral work for the course in the form of a video recording, for which the link was posted on Google Classroom.

Abstract

AbstractHaving a big number of students in content subject of a language class is a challenge for teacher since it is quite difficult to accommodate students’ critical thinking and active participation at the same time. Therefore, Hedwig strategy is aimed to give room for students to explore themselves and get involved in the materials delivered in the class. Furthermore, by having group and regroup to deliver message in Hedwig strategy, students are forced to be active participated in classroom activities. The idea of Hedwig strategy is inspired by Jigsaw and Think-Pair-Share which have existed before. To know whether Hedwig strategy is effectively applied in content subject in large language class, it is proposed to do quasi experimental study with one class as an experimental group and one class as a control group. The experimental group is treated by using Hedwig strategy. Prior to the experimental study, it is performed research and development to develop the test for pre-test and post-test. For that reason, the research problem is what test is valid and reliable for an experimental study on the effectiveness of Hedwig strategy for the 4th semester students in Language Teaching Methodology class in English Education Department Universitas Brawijaya. This research reports half of the whole plan where the researchers developed test for pre-test and posttest to measure students’ improvement in understanding Language Teaching Methodology. In short, the test developed in this study will be used to carry out experimental study as pre-test and post-test

Abstract

Vocabulary is essential for English learners to understand the material. To increase students' interest in learning new words, medias can be used. This study aims to evaluate the practicability of TikTok as an EFL educational platform based on students' perceptions and assist educators in this regard. This study employs a qualitative method using a questionnaire and interviews to determine the number of TikTok users and to gather information from interviewees to provide a comprehensive description and elucidate the perceptions of students. Purposive sampling was used to select 27 students majoring in Agricultural Product Processing Agribusiness from SMKN 02 BATU, of which 5 were chosen for interviews. The interview session identified five themes related to students' perception of TikTok educational videos and their impact on vocabulary development: 1) content type, 2) benefits, 3) advantages, 4) weaknesses, and 5) impacts. The results revealed that students mostly learn new vocabulary effectively through TikTok since it provides a practical way to understand the meaning through real-life examples from TikTok. The study found that using media to teach English to vocational students is more effective than using textbooks, despite some students finding it distracting. This suggests that implementing TikTok educational videos in the future could be more effective than previous methods.
