Abstract

This article is a summary of a qualitative observation to the students of English Education Program, Brawijaya University, Indonesia. It tries to describe the students’ learning experiences, perception, and expectation about issues related to the contents, that is intercultural communication; and learning methodology, particularly blended learning. As foreign language students, the subjects of this observation need to achieve not only language competence but also intercultural communication competence because when they communicate with people coming from different cultural backgrounds they should understand their communication styles as a part of their culture. Meanwhile, the advancement of information technology and communication (ITC) affects the teaching and learning strategy where blended learning has been very popular applied in some universities. This research employs three parallel classes in Cross Cultural Understanding course. Qualitative observation, document analysis, and online interviews were conducted to gain students pedagogical interaction, learning experiences, and expectation about both intercultural communication competences and blended learning strategy. The study reveals that students have new perspectives about the role of culture in communication especially the use of language as a medium of communication. Students also realize that living in a multicultural society needs an intercultural awareness to avoid misunderstanding caused by prejudice and overgeneralization toward people coming from different cultural background. Abouut the blended learning strategy applied in the course, students find it is interesting. The strategy motivates their learning activities because the media used is similar to social media that have been very familiar with their daily life. Keywords: intercultural, communication, competence, blended learning, awareness, misunderstanding

Abstract

Students in vocational high school mostly not acknowledge English language well because they are only focused in learning about the major material. In other words, while vocational high school students are learning English particularly in speaking skill there is an issue followed in acquiring the language which is speaking anxiety. Students feel anxious in speaking for the reason such as motivation and environment which make it difficult to comprehend it. This study aims at finding out the extent between classroom environment and students motivation towards speaking anxiety of vocational high school students using correlation method to discover the relationship. The subjects of this study were 105 students of first grade of beauty, culinary art major and second grade of design maker, design fashion in SMKN 3 Malang. The method of this study was quantitative with partial correlation design. This study used three kinds of questionnaire as the research instruments which are Public Speaking Class Anxiety Scale (PSCAS), Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) and Students Satisfaction of Classroom Environment (SSCE). The collected date would be analysed using Pearson Product Moment in SPSS. This study revealed that the correlation between classroom environment and speaking anxiety is 0.172  and the significance value is 0.0089 < 0,05 that can be interpreted as positive correlation but it is very weak correlation, the correlation between motivation and speaking anxiety is - 0.139 and the significance value is 0.0170 > 0,05 that can interpreted as a negative correlation or no correlation at all.  It is shown that the correlation between classroom environment (X1) and students motivation (X2) towards speaking anxiety (Y) is rejected or there is o correlation among variables. However, the correlataion between classroom environment and motivation os 0.289 with significance value 0.003<0,05 which means weak correlation. It can be assumed that classroom environment and motivation are not really associated with students speaking anxiety.

The reading strategies here are based on the SORS questionnaire which is global reading strategies, problem solving strategies, and support strategies. The research found that students’ usage on reading strategies is high with students’ preference of problem solving strategies. Some suggestions are made by the researchers regarding with the finding and discussion of this study. The suggestions are made for the English teacher which can help them to enhance the student’s learning better, as for the students can make them know about how to apply reading strategies used by them well, and also for the next researcher that have similarities with this study can use this study as the reference or as an introductory research.

Abstract

The composition of English language learning tools for middle schools has often not utilized the instrctional technology approach and only used approaches related to the educational discipline of teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL). English language learning materials in several middle schools in East Java also do not provide audio media-based activities for practice of listening skills. This article is the research results of the Borg & Gall research and development model which aimed to develop, validate, and test textual learning materials aided by audio recordings to develop the English-language competency of middle school students. The results of the development showed that audio media was proven to be e ectively capable as sca olds that play a role as learning aids. Audio media provides sound input that guides students to imitate the audio with accurate pronunciation. In addition, audio media input can also be comprehensible for students in accordance with the Input Hypothesis Theory of Krashen that states that those learning languages at “level i” should obtain comprehensible input at “level i + 1” or slightly higher than the current level, and this theory of Krashen is identical to the zone of proximal development (ZPD) theory of Vygotsky. This development also resulted in a learning design which applied the audio lingual communicative (ALC) strategy which is eclectic in its combination of two language learning strategies, which are the audio lingual method with communicative language teaching (CLT). The application of this method was appropriate with the Indonesian classroom context where the number of students in a classroom is on average 40 pupils or more.

However, limited English materials in this area particularly in Nursing Skill Competency seem to hinder its implementation. The current Community Service Program aimed to provide practical guidance for English subject teachers at vocational high schools-centre of excellence (SMK PK) in developing English materials for nursing. For three months, 16 English teachers in a city in East Java had been involved in this five-stage guidance activities comprising focused group discussion, material development training, material development practice, material compilation, and evaluation. This guidance activity resulted in developed English materials classified into eight nursing-related topics. The developed materials are the product of such integrated elements as the previously developed syllabus, supporting references, teacher teamwork/collaboration, and guidance from each member of the Community Service Team. The program evaluation also revealed positive responses from the participants. The developed English materials are expected to be fruitful and used as an alternative material by all English teachers and students of Nursing Skill Competency at vocational high schools throughout Indonesia.  Keywords: Material Development, English, Vocational School, Nursing
