Abstract

Rabies is an infectious disease, zoonotic, caused by virus from the genus Lyssa virus and generally transmitted by the bite of rabid animal, especially rabies infected dog. Rabies is preventable but is always fatal to humans if the central nervous system (CNS) is infected. Vaccination has been used as one of rabies prevention programmed. A total of 83 samples were tested using an Indirect ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay) to identify post-vaccination rabies antibody titer. Antibody titres correlated with absorbance values and standard solutions concentrations. Absorbance value can be determined using ELISA reader and mobile phone camera. Absorbance were read at 450 nm and 620 nm as reference using ELISA reader and image from mobile phone camera using image processing software (ImageJ). The aim of this study is to compared between ELISA reader as gold standard and mobile phone camera through validity testing such sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. There is no significant difference between gold standard and alternative test equipment. The mobile phone camera has sensitivity 98,6%, specificity 88.8 % and accuracy 97,5%. The image processing method using ELISA reader is relatively expensive and difficult to hold in laboratory with minimum funds. Image processing method using a mobile phone camera with ImageJ application is expected to be an alternative tool to read the result of ELISA.

Abstract

Boyolali District is the center area of dairy farm in Central Java Province. However, the quality of fresh milk of small scale dairy farm was still low due to a low quality of farming practice on hygiene and sanitation. The purpose of this activity was to improve the quality of fresh milk of small scale dairy farm through an extension and guidance of the farmers in using good hygiene and sanitation practices. For this purpose, 10 selecting farmers at Sruni Sub-district and 12 selecting farmers at Lanjaran Sub-district were subjected to intervention of three stages activities. First, collection of preliminary data of the level of hygiene and sanitation on milking process using Blood Agar Swab Test of milking equipment. Second, implementation of extension and advisory intervention. Third, evaluation of the microbiological milk quality based on Total Plate Count (TPC). The results showed that the hygiene and sanitation level of the first condition was considered as a bad category which 60.4% samples of fresh milk were on sixth standard (38.000 microorganism/ml of milk). After implementing extension and advisory intervention, 95.5% samples of fresh milk had a total microbiological number below SNI maximum standard (1.0 x 106 cfu/ml). Only one sample (4.5%) had TPC of 4.4 x 106 cfu/ml. Based on this result, the extension and advisory intervention could be used as a basis approach to increase the quality of fresh milk of small scale dairy farms.

Abstract

Milk products consumption has become a new trend of healthy lifestyle among students in order to meet appropriate daily nutrients. This study was aimed to measure the total number of microbes found in milk drinks sold around the IPB Dramaga and Cilibende and to determine factors that influence it. Samples were collected from 13 milk vendors within radius of 2 kilometers from outermost point of campus and taken with 3 repetitions. Calculation of the total number of microbes was done by using the plate count method in accordance with SNI 2897-2008 about testing method of microbial contamination in meat, eggs, and milk, as well as processed products and SNI 01-6366-2000 about the maximum limit of microbial contamination in food. Risk factors’ data was taken by interviewing milk drinks seller using structured questionnaire. Factors that influenced microbial contamination were analyzed using Chi-Square test. The results showed that 74.4% of milk drinks samples had a high total number of microbes. The average total number of microbes in Dramaga and Cilibende samples was 1.0 x 105 ± 1.4 x 105 cfu / ml and 1.1 x 107 ± 1.2 x 107 cfu/ml. The total number of microbes are significantly influenced (p<0.05) by equipments used, the cleanliness of the equipment, the cleanliness of the table, washing hands practice, and the distance from the crowd. The high number of microbial contamination in milk drinks could damage the quality of milk and shorten the shelf life.

Abstract

Hookworms infection remains as an important parasitic infections affecting animal and human health worldwide. However, information on the prevalence and the risk factors of hookworm infection on dogs in Indonesia is very limited. A cross sectional study to estimate the prevalence and to identify risk factors of hookworms infection on dogs was conducted in rural area with different topography, Sukabumi Regency, Indonesia. A Total of 204 dog stool specimens were examined for hookworm eggs using simple flotation methods. The data of related risk factors namely type of topography area (high and low land), purpose of having dog, dog demography, dog reared management and deworming were collected through dog owners interview’s with completed a questionnaire. Those data were analyzed using the chi-square test (χ2) and logistic regression. The prevalence of hookworm on dogs in Sukabumi was 24.5 % (95% Confidence Interval [CI]=19.1-30.8). This prevalence was associated with topography of the area, the age of dog, and type of dog keeping methods. The prevalence of hookworms was higher in the high land area than low land area (OR=5.935, 95% CI=2.764-12.744 ). Logistic regression identified pupies as a high risk group to hookworms infection (OR= 2.041, 95%CI=1.035-4.055). The dog which kept in the cage/tied had higher risk than free roaming dog (OR=3.66, 95%CI=1.479-9.091).Key words: Dog, hookworms, prevalence, risk factors, Sukabumi.

Abstract

Dairy products are innovative to improve the economic value of milk. Poor attention to the importance of good hygiene and milk handling of milk can lead to microbial contamination of milk, such as coliform and Staphylococcus aureus. This study aimed were to define the safety of ready-to-drink milk which sold around Dramaga and Cilibende IPB University campuses based on the total coliform and S. aureus and to determine the factors that affected it. Data were obtained by questionnaire from 12 sellers, furthermore milk samples were taken from 13 ready-to-drink milk's sellers with 3 replication The data were presented descriptively and analyzed using chi-square test to determine the relationship between the practice of the sellers with total contamination of coliform and S. aureus. The data results were compared with SNI 01-7388-2009 concerning the Maximum Limits of Microbial Contamination in Food. The average of coliform contamination in Dramaga and Cilibende 5,92í—103 ± 9,28í—103 CFU/ml and 7,60í—104 ± 1,25í—105 CFU/ml, respectively. The average of S. aureus contamination in Dramaga and Cilibende 3,84í—102 CFU/ml ± 5,36í—102 and 8,44í—104 ± 1,96í—105 CFU/ml, respectively. Furthermore, several practices of ready-to-drink milk sellers had a significant relationship with coliform contamination (p<0.05), which were the table cleanliness (p=0.020), distance to the crowd (p=0.001), and hand washing (p=0.001). The practice of ready-to-drink milk sellers had a significant relationship with S. aureus contamination (p<0.05) which were the table cleanliness (p=0.020), and distance of the crowd (p=0.020). The high contamination by coliform and S. aureus is caused by the poor sanitation and personal hygiene of the milk seller during the serving and processing of the milk.
