Abstract

A short story is a story that is written shorter than a novel and longer than a fable. Short stories focus on larger or smaller issues and focus on building strong feelings from the readers. A short story tells about one aspect of a character's life. This aspect of life can be an event, a picture of a feeling, or a simple action in the life of a character. Short stories can also influence or even inspire readers. Because it is no longer a taboo if short stories are widely used in the English learning process. One of the important aspects in learning English is Vocabulary. Teaching this aspect is neither easy nor difficult. There are many things that teachers can use to improve vocabulary, because vocabulary in the learning process needs to use appropriate techniques/methods, one of which can use short stories. Therefore, this study wanted to find out how the effect of short stories on increasing students' vocabulary. In the process, this research uses a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design. In this design, the model is one group pre-test and post-test. 20 students of class VIII A were taken as samples in this study, to calculate the results of the student test, the researcher used the mean score formula to analyze the data. As the results, the short story in the form of a storyline has a lot of vocabulary, so that the students' vocabulary is increasing, this is proven by the significant difference between the students' pre-test and post-test.A short story is a story that is written shorter than a novel and longer than a fable. Abstract

The purpose of this research was to know the correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension in descriptive text of students at SMA Negeri 3 Tondano. The test method was used in this quantitative research, which was a type of correlation research. Students in class XI IPA 1 were the focus of this research consisted of 26 students. The data collection technique used multiple-choice objective tests with a total of 50 questions, each for a vocabulary mastery test of 25 numbers and a student's reading comprehension test of 25 numbers. From the calculation of hypothesis testing through the use of the Pearson product moment correlation test seen from the significance value of 0.001 < 0.005 then it was correlated and the Pearson correlation value is 0.0679 based on the norm, the degree of correlation lies in the Pearson correlation value of 0.60 to 0.80, meaning the correlation between vocabulary mastery and students' reading comprehension was included in the category of strong correlation. Because the Pearson correlation value is 0.679, it can be concluded that the students' vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the students' descriptive text at SMA N 3 Tondano have a positive correlation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to address the following research topic: Does the use of Collaborative Strategy Reading (CSR) affect how well class XI IPA 1 student understand recount texts? This essay aims to demonstrate how group reading strategies impact students' comprehension of recount texts. Data from a reading test comprising 40 numerous questions and 10 question types were gathered for the purposes of this quantitative study. This pre-experimental study used a one-group pretest-posttest design. For such 2022–2023 academic year, 32 students from Tondano's XI IPA 1 SMA Negeri 1 class took part in this activity. The information was gathered using descriptive statistics, which were then analyzed using statistical analysis. Data analysis produced the following conclusions: In these other words, the kid performed better on the reading portion of the test after treatment than before. (1) In the pre-test, 80 was the highest score and 50 was the lowest; in the post-test, 100, or a perfect score, was the highest score and 70 was the lowest. (2) The post-average test was 81.41, which was greater than the pre-average test of 62.96. This is because it can be demonstrated the students' reading performance on the pre-test or post-test before treatment is more diverse than on the test after treatment using Collaboration Strategy Reading (CSR) calculations and the standard deviation

Abstract

This study looked into whether or not using a spelling bee game may help pupils enhance their vocabulary mastery. The goal of this study is to see if students' vocabulary improved after playing the Spelling Bee Game. The quantitative method is used to conduct this study. This study uses a pre-experimental design with a single group pre test and post test. The subject of this research is first grade of SMP Anugrah Tondano consists of 10 students. The tests are in the forms of arrange random words, multiple choice and connecting pairs. The results of this study reveal that the mean post-test scores are higher (75) than the pre-test scores (46). Based on the findings, it can be stated that using the Spelling Bee Game to boost students' vocabulary is helpful since it stimulates students' learning and spelling of nouns.

Abstract

"Using Board Race Game to promote the students' vocabulary mastery at VIII grade kids of SMP Anugrah Tondano" was the topic of this study. This study sought to determine if the Board Race game improved pupils' vocabularies. This study was carried out using a quantitative approach. This study used an experimental pre-test and post-test design in one class. This study focused on the first grade at SMP Anugrah Tondano, which included 20 pupils. Each test consisted of 20 numbers, which were delivered to the pupils. According to the study's findings, the post-test's mean score (68) was higher than the pre-test's (38.25). Based on the findings, it was possible to draw the conclusion that utilizing a board race game to teach kids vocabulary was beneficial since it might motivate them to study and help them retain more words.

Abstract

This research focus on the use of Read, Cover, Remember, Retell (RCRR) in improving students' reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 1 Tondano. The research sample consisted of 31 students at class XI IPA 6. A quantitative research method was used, employing a Pre-Experimental Design form of one group pre-test and post-test design. The instrument used in this research was a multiple-choice test consisting of 25 items. Data were analyzed using mean score formula to see significant differences between the pre-test and post-test scores. The results showed that there was a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores. The result of students’ pre-test was 41,48 and the post-test was 71,61. The different score between pre-test and post-test was 30,13. The result of this research is indicate that mean score of post-test was higher 30,13% more than pre-test. This shows that the use of the RCRR method is effective in improving students' reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 1 Tondano. In addition, students report that the RCRR helps them to focus more and understand the text better. In conclusion, this research recommends that the RCRR method be used as an alternative learning in teaching reading especially reading comprehension in schools.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to improve the students’ vocabulary through the use of Glossing technique. The design of this research is quantitative research through pre-experimental design with pre-test and post-test design This study was conducted at SMP Anugrah Tondano. The subject of the research was the second grade students in academic year of 2019/2020. The writer used reading text of Narrative text .The result of the data analysis showed that there was an increase between the pre-test and post-test. It can be seen from 10 students showed that the mean score of pre-test was 53 and post-test was 74 score. Based on this finding from this study, it can be concluded that having more vocabulary significantly affects the comprehension of the students reading activity. Moreover by having many vocabulary the students can easily get the information and can enrich their knowledge by reading a lot of book. Finally, this research proved that the Glossing technique effective to improve student’s vocabulary in reading comprehension.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the students' anxiety when speaking English in the eleventh grade at SMK Kristen 2 Tomohon. The goal of this study is to determine the extent of students' anxiety and the causes when speaking English. The qualitative method was employed in this study data gathered by observation and interview. According to the study's findings, 2 students (10%) are relaxed, 7 students (35%) reported mild anxiety, and 11 students (55%) are experiencing moderate anxiety. The factors cause anxiety are, they felt intimidated by the teacher, they did not understand or the material was difficult, they felt there was no preparation, or because the teacher did not explain clearly. It can be concluded that the majority of students have nervousness when speaking in English. It is crucial for English teachers to be paying attention. The teacher must provide encouragement to the students and speak confidently

Abstract

This study aims to prove whether the Word Game Application which is Wordscapes can help students to improve their vocabulary or not. In this study, the researcher employed the quantitative research method. The subject of this study is class X J at SMA N 1 Kotamobagu which consists of 30 students (13 are boys and 17 are girls with an average age of 15-17 years old). Data were collected using pre-test and post-test design in the form of matching tests. The result of this study proves that the mean scores of the post-test are higher than the mean scores of the pre-test. The mean scores of the pre-test is 63.16 and the mean scores of post-test is 85.83. Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that the Word Game Application which is Wordscapes can help students to improve their vocabulary mastery and make students more enthusiastic in learning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the maxims of politeness used by the main characters in the film Me Before You. The research method used is qualitative method. In analyzing the data, the writer used the theory of politeness maxims from Geofrrey Leech (1983). There are 6 kinds of politeness maxims proposed by Leech, namely: Tact Maxim, Generosity Maxim, Modesty Maxim, Approbation Maxim, Agreement Maxim and Sympathy Maxim. The data in this study were taken by the main characters utterances in Me Before You movie, Louisa and William. The result of this research is that there are 27 politeness maxims used by the main characters in this movie. All kinds of politeness maxims are used by the main characters, 3 Tact Maxim, 6 Generosity Maxim, 3 Modesty Maxim, 8 Approbation Maxim, 5 Agreement Maxim, and 2 Sympathy Maxim. The most dominant kinds of maxim used in the movie is Approbation Maxim. The most dominant maxim used by Louisa is Generosity Maxim and the most dominant maxim used by William is Approbation Maxim.
