The objective of this research is to discover the effectiveness of using songs in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. This research is conducted at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 7 Manado in the academic year of 2020-2021. There are 20 students engaged to be the subject of this study. The researchers select one class to get treatment in order to achieve the objective of this study. The data are obtained through pre-test and post-test. Before giving the treatment to the students, the researchers firstly measure their knowledge by giving a pre-test. Then after doing the treatment, the students are required to do a post-test to find out whether the treatment has a significant effect on students’ vocabulary mastery or not. Memorizing songs can be utilized in English learning to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. Thus, the learning objectives can be reached successfully. Improving vocabulary mastery using songs is not only beneficial but also pleasant for students. They become more interested in studying and not easy to get bored. The relationship between teachers and students also becomes closer because students tend to feel more comfortable asking questions to their teachers about the difficulties or new words they find. It can be seen from the students’ scores in post-test that are higher than the pre-test. The average score of the pre-test is 3,85 and the average score of the post-test is 12,65. Finally, the researchers conclude that songs give a significant impact in improving students’ vocabulary mastery.

This study aims to determine whether the E-learning method can be effective in optimizing students' reading comprehension of descriptive text with WhatsApp Application. This research was conducted in class X MIA 1 SMA Negeri 1 Buko in the academic year of 2020/2021. This study used one group-pretest-postest design of research with the data analysis were the frequency distribution of scores, mean and standard deviation. The questions from the pretest and posttest used the type of multiple choice questions with questions about the descriptive text. From this result, it was found that the mean of posttest Y = 7.8 with standard deviation Sy = 0.79 was higher than mean score at pretest X = 5.33 with standard deviation Sx = 0.89. It means that students' reading comprehension in descriptive text was higher after treatment at posttest than pretest. So the researcher concluded that the application of the E-learning method through WhatsApp application was effective in optimizing students' reading comprehension of descriptive text. This study is aimed at analysing purposeful language that students prefer in English classroom. It is to analyze the occurrence of code changes in language while communicating. The technique used in collecting data is questionnaires. The questionnaires are modified from Debreli and Oyman (2015). Data are analyzed using percentage formula by Riduwan (2014:28). Since the study is conducted at English Education Department, it is found that the material given by the lecturers are quickly understood if the language is used by the lecturers is mixed (English and Indonesian). The students of sixth semester (academic year 2020-2021) class A and B consist of 30 students who fill the questionnaires. The questionnaires consist of 10 questions with the intention of asking the students language preference in English classroom. For the number of those who respond to the question given is from number 1 to 10 that answer English 90 or 30 %, which answer English and Indonesian on the number 1 to 10 is 197 or 65,67 %, and which answers Indonesian on the question 1 to 10 is 12 or 4 %. Of the 10 questions that are shared with students and have been answered by students who prefer to use English and Indonesian in the process of learning to teach in the classroom between lecturers and students in order to be understood.

This research aimed at finding out the improvement of students’ vocabulary by using Last Man Standing Game at Seventh grade of SMP Kristen Malak. This research used pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. The population of this research was the SMP Kristen Malak. The sample of this research was the seventh grade students which consisted of 11 students. The researcher used format multiple choice and fill in the blank test as the instrument of this research. Based on the research findings, it showed that using Last Man Standing Game was effective to increase students’ vocabulary. It is proved by mean score of post-test. The mean score before and after treatment (35,63 became 65,09) with the t-test value was greater than t-table 13,97 > 1.812. The researcher concluded that using Last Man Standing Game could increase students’ vocabulary and could be one good technique in teaching vocabulary.

This research aims to analyze the types of maxims that are flouted in Game of Thrones Season 1. The descriptive qualitative method is employed in this research. The data of this research are in the form of utterances from the characters in Game of Thrones that contain maxim flouting. The source of the data is the Game of ThronesTV series and its script. The data are collected through watching the TV series, reading the script, and taking notes of utterances where the maxims are flouted. The results show that all the four types of maxims are flouted by the characters of the TV series with the occurrence of 19 times. The type of maxim that is flouted the most by the characters is the maxim of relation. The characters flout the maxim of relation on nine different occasions. Then, the maxim of quality is ranked second with the frequency of six times. After that, the following maxim of quality is maxim of quantity with three cases. The purpose of the study is to describe whether using picture can improve students’ reading comprehension. This research involved the Eight-grade students of SMP N 1 Siau Timur Selatan were 22 students as the research subject. The design of this research is the pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test and the instrument used in collecting the data was a test. The data were analyzed by using the mean score. The finding shows that this research came out with finding that using picture is effective can improve students reading comprehension. The difference in student scores on T1 & T2 where the mean score of T1 was 64.54 and the mean score of T2 was 78.18. These results indicate that the use of picture in teaching reading comprehension is effective to improve students reading comprehension. This also shows that the use of picture in learning activities at SMP N 1 Siau Timur Selatan was effective to improve students reading comprehension. This study analyzed code mixing used by Marion Jola in a YouTube video. The writer used the theory proposed by Muysken to identify the different types of code mixing found in the utterance of Marion Jola and to figure out her reasons of using code mixing. Since the data were taken in the form of spoken words rather than numerical data, the author then applied descriptive qualitative method to answer the research questions. 44 data of code mixing were found as a result of the analysis. There were 13 data classified as insertion type, 14 classified as alternation type and 17 identified as congruent lexicalization type. Furthermore, this study discovered nine reasons of code mixing used by Marion Jola based on Hoffmann theory. 1) talking about a particular topic 13 times, 2) quoting somebody else 3 times, 3) being emphatic about something once, 4) interjection 2 times, 5) repetition used for clarification 2 times, 6) intention for clarifying the speech content for interlocutor 4 times, 7) expressing group identity 5 times, 8) to soften or strengthen request or command 2 times, 9) because of lexical need 15 times and there is no data found concerning the reason to exclude other people when a comment is intended for only limited audience. To find out students' perceptions of online English learning during the COVID-19 pandemic at SMAN 1 Kakas, is the purpose of this study. The research used is descriptive research with a quantitative approach. By using the survey method. Questionnaire is a tool to collect data. Thirty students of class XI semester 2 were randomly selected from class XI IPA, XI IPS, XI Language at SMAN 1 Kakas in the academic year 2021/2022 to be used as samples in this study. Research conducted by researchers found that students' perceptions of online English learning are students have positive perceptions, this is based on data analysis that has been carried out. At SMAN 1 Kakas the applications used to support the online learning process are the Google Class room, Zoom, Google Meet applications, but the most frequently used is the WhatsApp application. Students' perception of online English learning is that students have positive perceptions, this is based on data analysis that has been done. The percentages of some aspects show this. Perceptions with aspects of teaching materials 52%, perceptions with aspects of the atmosphere or learning environment 52%, and perceptions with aspects of student interaction 53.9%. On the category scale, 52% and 53.9% are included in the positive category. The background of this research was based on students’ difficulties in differentiating meaning and spelling of the words with homophone pair, which means their understanding of homophone were less. This research is intend to see whether Crossword Puzzle Game is effective or not in improving the students’ ability of understanding homophone. In other words, this research was to find out how much the improvement of students’ understanding after being taught using Crossword Puzzle Game. For that reason a strategy must be given to make them learn easily. In this research, Crossword Puzzle Game was used to help students understand homophone words. This study was focused on writing skill, especially on spelling, at the 7th grade of SMP Negeri 5 Manado, specifically class 7.7, in the academic year of 2021/2022. This research discuss about the use of Crossword Puzzle Game to improve students’ understanding of homophone. The implementation of Crossword Puzzle Game in teaching homophone was conducted with pre-test and post-test. The participant of the pre-test was 22 students where the average of students’ score was 63.77, while the participant of post-test was 21 students where the average of students’ score was 81.52. By those results, the increase percentage was calculated and the result showed that the students’ of 7.7 in SMP Negeri 5 Manado, in the academic year of 2021/2022 made an improvement score about 30.70%. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there is a significant difference in vocabulary skills between grade 11 students taught using popular songs and those taught without popular songs. . In this study, 15 students from XI AKP participated as an experimental class and 16 students from XI TKJ participated as a control class. Data were collected using a vocabulary test. Through trial and error, I found that her 20 items on the test were valid with a confidence level of 0.88. These items were administered to her two groups as pre- and post-tests. The results of the study show that there is a significant difference in students' vocabulary proficiency between the experimental and control classes. The mean posttest score for the experimental class is 66, and the mean score for the control class is 41.25. The t-test results show that the t-observation (5.053) is higher than the t-table (2.045). In summary, using popular songs can improve students' vocabulary. Encourage teachers to use popular songs as a medium for teaching vocabulary to students.
