Abstract

The immersion of the flipped classroom teaching model in blended and online language learning is indispensable. The purpose of this study was to propose improvement in critical thinking in reading through the flipped classroom teaching model of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners in higher education. A quasi-experimental design was used to improve reading skills based on the framework of critical thinking for critical reading with a paired t-test of pre-test and post-test. The participants were 37 second-semester students in the English for Academic Purposes class. The results show that the flipped classroom teaching model enhanced students’ critical thinking for critical reading in the aspects of accuracy, clarity, precision, depth, relevance, and logic from the mean score of the pre-tests (12.4865) to the post-tests (18.3243). Students had a positive perception of the implementation of this model in terms of self-directed learning. This study implies that critical thinking for critical reading skills needs supportive teaching and learning environment that can allow students to have self-study prior to the class so that online learning can be effective to synergize the application of flipped classrooms with critical thinking skills in reading.

Abstract

The study aimed to examine the learners’ perception of the use of local-based digital storytelling on learning resilience and learning autonomy. Perceived ideas were purposively taken from 30 learners who experienced a local-based digital storytelling-making process in an English for Communication in Academic Settings class. The findings of the study revealed that learners perceived digital storytelling as highly motivating and useful for learning resilience and learning autonomy. They indicated a need for more local-based digital storytelling in their language learning, recognizing its value in understanding the necessity of resilience in overcoming adversities. Learners believe that digital storytelling practice improves their creativity, critical thinking, and information retention, hence strengthening the connections between real-life experiences and academic knowledge. The collaborative and participatory aspect of digital storytelling enhances students' self-learning and ownership of learning autonomy. Examining learners’ perceptions can be useful to articulate their ideas about the language learning process related to learning strategies, strengths and weaknesses to improve. It can also assist language educators to promote inclusivity in the classroom by providing insight into the individual qualities of learners.

Abstract

In recent years, higher education institutions have faced challenges in the field of education. The impact of digital technology such as augmented reality increases the possibility of self -regulated learning. Therefore this study analyze the relationship between self-efficacy, attitude and self-regulated learning across cognition, motivation, behaviour, and context through augmented reality in reading for English as foreign language (EFL) learners. Data were collected from 213 undergraduate students in English for Specific Class (ESP) in an academic university in Indonesia. This study was used a non-experimental, analytic survey research design with SmartPLS. The study assessed the measurement model of the factor loadings, composite reliability, and convergent validity, and employed bootstrapping for p-values of the path coefficient. The findings of the study reported that self-efficacy has a statistically significant relationship with cognition, motivation, behaviour and context while attitude has a statistically positive relationship with motivation and context but not with cognition and behavior.

Abstract

Inclusive education is the right of every individual, including deaf students, to have equal access to English language learning. This research aims to develop a prototype of a web-based sign language learning model, using American Sign Language (WEBSL), for deaf students in learning English. This research uses a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the ADDIE development model. The subject of the study involved 25 deaf students from one of the Special Schools (SLB) in Pontianak City. Data was collected through analysis of the content of English textbooks tailored to deaf students, as well as thematic interviews with experienced teachers, to identify students' learning needs that included inclusivity, accessibility, language clarity, and visual learning preferences. The results of the analysis show the need for an interactive web-based learning model to facilitate deaf students' access to customized English language materials. The prototype developed in this study is designed to suit needs, be interactive, easily accessible, and take into account cultural sensitivities. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the importance of developing adaptive and interactive learning resources, as well as their implications for improving the English skills of deaf students.
