Abstract

Laughter is an easily reachable way that can be used to erase barriers of communication for educational purposes. The purpose of this paper is to seek out students’ perception of humor added in teaching English and how that humor influenced students’ engagement in English classroom activity. This study employs research instrument of questionnaire and observation concepts through qualitative design. There are 78 students of multi-background: gender, level of intelligence and social background as research participants. These backgroundsareintended to obtain objective perception of the students. The findings revealed that the majority of students believed the teacher’s humor could prevent them from feeling stress of learning English, develop a better relationship between teacher and students, help them remember and understand the lesson, encourage them to be more active in the classroom and ease them in learning English. However there are some obstacles to overcome during humor application that apparently the English teachers need to build a good relationship and mutual trust with students and understand students’ interests, likes and dislikes prior to applying humor, so that the humor would be more likely to be welcomed and it would not cause emotional and psychological impact such as bullying and etc for the students.

Abstract

There are still a number of less skilled readers in higher degree education where academic texts are staple needs (Hellekjaer, 2009). This study investigated a technique to help students increase their reading ability in TOEFL reading section. A technique named Notetaking technique was implemented during two cycles of classroom action research. There were 3 meetings for each cycle. The participants were 17 Economics students who are taking TOEFL Preparation course at Universitas Syiah Kuala, Aceh, Indonesia. The result from cycle one showed no increase since the average only incline to 38.58. Then in cycle 2, there was a significant increase reaching 45.11 (which is the minimum TOEFL standard for the university). It can be deduced that this technique might not be appropriate for large classes as it demands individual assistance. Besides, a good skill of organizing information is fundamental in this strategy to maximize the students’ effort in answering the TOEFL questions during the test.

Abstract

Ruangguru, one of Indonesia's prepaid applications, has facilitated autonomous learning for students. Ruangguru (henceforth RG) is a mobile application enhances online learning organizations by aligning it with Indonesia's curriculum. RG offered students a platform with distinctive characteristics to support online study in several subjects. The present study examines students' viewpoints on using Ruangguru, one of Indonesia's online learning prepaid platforms, and ascertains its advantages and disadvantages. The current study employed a qualitative methodology, utilizing interviews to collect data. The participants comprised senior high school students from several cities in Indonesia who were enrolled in regular classes, subscribed to RG, and willingly provided their consent by signing a consent form. The findings revealed that RG possesses several benefits, including the ability to set one's own pace, user-friendliness, independent learning, and a flexible platform. It allowed pupils to learn without any limitations on time or location. However, the RG was unable to substitute regular classes with the presence of teachers, the decrease of social interactions in learning, the significant disparity between the wealthy and the impoverished, and the diminishing role of teachers. Ruangguru's primary focus is students' academic achievement. Yet, it is crucial to resolve other notable aspects, such as inadequate feedback, teacher guidance, and lack of peer interaction. As a further recommendation, to evaluate the effectiveness of the RG, it is also recommended that students' achievement and the impact of using RG in the EFL classroom be analyzed and cross-referenced.
