Abstract

Need analysis is conducted to get the data about the Balinese local culture that could be accommodated in the development of supplementary instructional devices for teaching English in Class VII in the form of material (textbooks), electronic media, and assessment instrument. The data is collected through documents study, questionnaires, and interviews by involving English teachers and seventh grade students from nine secondary schools in the District of Buleleng shows that supplementary instructional devices which contain of Balinese local cultural need to be developed. The panel analysis which involved the expert of Balinese local culture shows the findings that there are some local culture such as brahman, jemet, brahmacari, maître, lascarya,  segilik seguluk,  menyama braya, selulung sebayantaka, pasidikaran, jengah, tri kaya parisudha, jemet, swadharma (catur asrama), tat twam asi, rwa bhineda, menyama braya, tri hita karana, de koh ngomong, tri hita karana, lascarya, satya laksana,  kesenian bali, pramana, jele melah wenang sambat, madue idep, maitri, karuna, dan bani meli bani ngadep could be accommodated to develop the products and they are expected to be able to support the development of national character building, such as religious, discipline, curiousity, nationalism, hard work, responsibility, social care, self confident, logical thought, critical thinking, creative, innovative, love reading, and independent. Key words: assessment, local culture, instructional material, electronic media, nation character build-       ing, instructional devices ABSTRAK  Dalam rangka pengembangan suplemen perangkat pembelajaran mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris Kelas VII dalam bentuk materi (buku teks), media elektronik, dan perangkat asesmen yang meng-akomodasi budaya lokal Bali untuk menunjang pengembangan karakter bangsa dilaksanakan analisis kebutuhan dengan melakukan analisis dokumen, wawancara, pengisian angket dan panel analisis. Data dikumpulkan dengan melibatkan guru Bahasa Inggris dan siswa kelas VII dari 9 SMP di Kecamatan Buleleng serta pakar di bidang budaya lokal Bali. Berdasarkan panel analisis ditemukan budaya lokal seperti brahman, jemet, brahmacari, maître, lascarya,  segilik seguluk,  menyama braya, selulung sebayantaka, pasidikaran, jengah, tri kaya parisudha, jemet, swadharma (catur asrama), tat twam asi, rwa bhineda, menyama braya, tri hita karana, de koh ngomong, tri hita karana, lascarya, satya laksana,  kesenian bali, pramana, jele melah wenang sambat, madue idep, maitri, karuna, dan bani meli bani ngadep dapat diakomodasikan dalam pengembangan perangkat pembelajaran. Pengakomodasian tersebut diharapkan akan dapat mengembangkan karakter siswa seperti religius, disiplin, rasa ingin tahu, semangat kebangsaan, kerja keras, tanggung jawab, cinta damai, jujur, toleransi, kerja sama, bersahabat/komunikatif, peduli lingkungan, peduli sosial, percaya diri, berpikir logis, kritis, kreatif, dan inovatif, gemar membaca, mandiri, kerja keras, menghargai prestasi, dan patriotik. Kata kunci: asesmen, budaya lokal, materi ajar,  media elektronik, pengembangan karakter bangsa,         perangkat pembelajaran

Abstract

This study analyzed the quality of multiple-choice test used as middle test made by the English teachers in one school in Singaraja. This study was essential to be conducted since the items of the multiple-choice test must have good quality to be used to assess the students’ achievement levels. This study used content analysis method in analyzing100 items from 3 different instruments. In collecting the data, the checklist analysis form was used to compare the items of teacher-made multiple-choice test with the norms as one of the standards in making a good multiple-choice test, then clarified through interview. From the data that have been obtained, there are 72% of students who got bad scores in the middle test. There is 1% of the items has sufficient quality, 8% of items have good quality, and the rest of the items have very good quality. The most common mistake found is in the punctuation and capitalization. It is supported by the results of the interview, which show that the teachers did not know precisely the norm of punctuation and capitalization. It can be concluded that the teachers already follow the norms of making a multiple-choice test, and it is indicated that the quality of the multiple-choice test is not the only factor that affects students’ achievement levels.Keywords: instrument quality, norms, teacher-made multiple-choice test

Abstract

The changes of curriculum influences the assessment procedure implemented in elementary and high schools in Indonesia education system. Traditional test is no longer becomes the primary assessment instrument since the focus of the assessment is on the students’ competence. Therefore, alternatives in assessment need to be put into consideration. The implementation of the alternatives assessment, such as portfolio, journal, and self and peer- assessment will bring their own challenges, and to face the challenges teachers need to broaden their insight on the opportunities that embedded on each alternative assessment techniques.

Abstract

The aims of this study focused on looking at teachers’ perception and practice of giving feedback and also their challenges of giving feedback during online learning. This study used a descriptive qualitative method and online questionnaire was used to collect the data. The result of this study found that, teacher had a positive perception on the process of giving feedback. About 90% of teachers revealed that feedback was given to communicate about the gaps in performance, teachers’ expectation, affirming the marks and providing chances for self-assessment. Moreover, for correcting errors, there were 80% of teachers corrected the errors and highlighted them and 90% of them used word feedback positively. Time management was the biggest challenge found from the teachers for giving individual feedback. Hence, it needs to be considered to use an effective and efficient technique or tool as an aid for teachers to give the feedback during online learning.

Abstract

Assisting students to have good reading comprehension is essential to be accomplished during learning. Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) comes as the most used strategy to promote students’ literacy and build their reading comprehension based on the pre-observation in junior high schools in Karangasem Regency. This study aimed to investigate students’ perception of using SSR to enhance students’ reading comprehension in SMPN 1 Abang. The design of the study was mixed-method. The setting of this study is SMPN 1 Abang, located in Abang district, Karangasem regency, Bali province. This study used a questionnaire as the instrument of this study. The type of questionnaire used is a mail survey, specifically the questionnaire created in scale items by using Likert-type questions. As the study results, the mean score was categorized as very high because it was 4.50 and the interval was 4.00<M<5.00. In other words, the student's perception of using SSR to enhance students’ reading comprehension in SMPN 1 Abang showed very positive qualifications. Thus, it implies that SSR is helpful to improve students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the transcript of Maudy Ayunda’s speech as a critical discourse analysis taken from a video from Youtube Chanel Liputan 6. Maudy Ayunda is a spokesperson for G20 Presidency in Indonesia. The method used by the researcher was qualitative descriptive with textual content analysis based on Van Dijk’s design. This analysis is divided into four parts: macro-structure, superstructure, superstructure, and microstructure. This study also examines the linguistic aspect. In the macro-structure, the textual content is analyzed thematically. The theme of Maudy Ayunda’s speech was about persuading Indonesian people to participate in making success the G20 Presidency in Indonesia. Then, for the superstructure, the text of Maudy Ayunda’s speech is divided into three main elements, namely: opening, content, and closing. In superstructure analyze the general meaning by providing supporting reasons organized in the opening, content, and closing of the discourse. In micro-structure analyzes semantically, which refers to the social meaning of the text and the persuasive language used in the text. Besides that, Maudy Ayunda used formal language when delivered her speech. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Speech, Van Djik

Abstract

This research is focusing on how the web blogs use in teaching English writing class for EFL students. Learning has led students and teachers to interact at a distance through the involvement of media, platforms, and learning strategies within a complete virtual learning community. This research aims to investigate the use of Web Blog for English writing class for ELF students. This study carried out library research by conducting a literature review, where the data source used previous research on the related topic to achieve the study's objective. Four research articles published in reputable journals are listed in this research. The research aimed to determine the influence of the used web blog on the achievement of writing taken from several research articles conducted by several researcher. This study discovered that writing is one of the greatest important English abilities, and the use of web blog writing class for ELF students positively impacts English learning. The findings were derived from a literature review, where the data source was previous studies on the relevant subject. As a result, using the web blog in writing class for ELF students has a positive influence on learning writing. Keywords: Web Blog, Writing, ELF Students

Abstract

This study was designed to review the literature on the implementation of YouTube as the alternative learning media in English Language Teaching for bilingual young learners, which includes (1) identifying the effectiveness of using YouTube for independent bilingual learner; (2) YouTube in enhancing English language skills; and (3) providing suggestions for choosing the teaching strategy and media applying YouTube for Independent Bilingual Learner. This study employed a systematic review method to critically observe the application of YouTube as a digital learning medium for independent bilingual learners. Data collection was carried out through a systematic review of 45 articles with several predetermined categories related to the use of YouTube. The research findings implied the effectiveness of using YouTube as an alternative medium for young bilingual learners during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was also revealed that from the results of the literature review, the use of YouTube could affect students’ language skills. In addition, the use of YouTube also affected self-motivation and self-regulated learning for bilingual young learners. This study also provided suggestions for teachers to pay attention to several things in using YouTube as an alternative media in ELT during the current pandemic.
