Abstract

ABSTRAKIntroduction: The aesthetic component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN-AC) assesses the need for orthodontic treatment as well as its psychosocial impact. One common psychosocial impact is dental anxiety, which can hinder individuals from undergoing orthodontic treatment. This study aimed to analyze the level of orthodontic treatment need using IOTN-AC and dental anxiety, as well as to analyze the correlation between both variables among dental students. Methods: This correlational analytic study with an observational approach employed a purposive sampling technique involving dental students of Universitas Padjadjaran. Data were collected online through a Google Form containing a dental anxiety questionnaire and IOTN-AC assessment. The subjects consisted of 46 active undergraduate dental students from the 2021 and 2022 batches who had never received fixed or removable orthodontic treatment. Data were analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation test. Results: A total of 60.9% of respondents did not require orthodontic treatment, 28.3% had a mild need, and 10.8% had a moderate need. Among those with no treatment need, 6.5% reported no anxiety, 26.1% low anxiety, 24% moderate anxiety, and 4.3% high anxiety. Among those with mild to moderate treatment need, 2.2% reported no anxiety, 15.2% low, 17.4% moderate, and 4.3% high anxiety. Spearman’s test showed a negative correlation between treatment need and dental anxiety (p=0.032; r=-0.506). Conclusions: The higher the level of orthodontic treatment need, the lower the level of dental anxiety among dental studentsKEY WORDS: Index of orthodontic treatment need, dental anxiety, malocclusion, undergraduate studentsKorelasi antara tingkat kebutuhan perawatan ortodonti dengan dental anxiety mahasiswa program studi sarjana kedokteran gigi: Studi observasionalABSTRACTPendahuluan:  Komponen estetika Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN-AC) menilai kebutuhan perawatan ortodonti serta dampak psikososialnya. Dampak psikososial yang umum terjadi adalah dental anxiety yang dapat menghambat individu menjalani perawatan ortodonti. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis tingkat kebutuhan perawatan ortodonti menggunakan IOTN-AC dan dental anxiety serta korelasi antara keduanya pada mahasiswa kedokteran gigi. Metode: Penelitian analitik korelasional dengan pendekatan observasional dan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling pada mahasiswa Kedokteran Gigi Universitas Padjadjaran, Pengumpulan data secara daring melalui google form yang berisi kuesioner dental anxiety dan penilaian IOTN-AC. Subjek penelitian adalah 46 mahasiswa aktif Kedokteran Gigi Universitas Padjadjaran angkatan 2021, 2022 dan belum pernah mendapatkan perawatan ortodonti cekat maupun lepasan. Analisis data menggunakan uji korelasi rank spearman; Hasil: 60,9% responden tidak membutuhkan perawatan ortodonti, 28,3 kebutuhan ringan, dan 10,8% kebutuhan sedang. Responden yang tidak membutuhkan perawatan menunjukan 6,5% tidak cemas, 26,1% kecemasan rendah, 24% kecemasan sedang, 4,3% kecemasan tinggi. Kebutuhan perawatan ringan dan sedang menunjukkan 2,2% tidak cemas, 15,2% kecemasan rendah, 17,4% kecemasan sedang dan 4,3% kecemasan tinggi. Uji spearman menunjukan korelasi negatif antara tingkat kebutuhan perawatan ringan dan sedang dengan tingkat dental anxiety (p-value=0,032; r= -0,506). Simpulan: Semakin tinggi tingkat kebutuhan perawatan ortodonti, maka tingkat dental anxiety cenderung semakin rendah pada mahasiswa sarjana kedokteran gigi.KATA KUNCI: Indeks kebutuhan perawatan ortodonti, dental anxiety, maloklusi, mahasiswa

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Community empowerment is essential in Indonesia due to the limited number of health professionals, their uneven distribution, and the low level of oral health literacy in the population. Empowerment efforts should reach all population groups and align with the Healthy Indonesia 2030 agenda, which emphasizes preventive and promotive services within a continuum of care framework. The aim of this study is to evaluate the improvement of oral health literacy through various empowerment strategies among adolescents, and to conduct early detection of oral health conditions in toddlers as baseline data for empowerment initiatives. Methods: This study used an experimental pretest and posttest design with four community empowerment approaches, including oral health literacy improvement through crossword puzzles and HELD-14 based playing cards, education on cariogenic foods for adolescents and toddlers, early detection of oral health conditions in toddlers, and a 21 day good oral health habit counseling program combined with dental screening for toddlers. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. Inclusion criteria were willingness to participate, ability to read and write, and absence of hearing or speech impairments. Exclusion criteria included absence during the intervention activities and incomplete questionnaire responses or dental examinations. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro Wilk and Kolmogorov Smirnov tests for normality, followed by independent t tests and Mann Whitney tests. Results: Empowerment interventions among adolescent communities using crossword puzzles, HELD-14 based playing cards, education on cariogenic foods, and the 21 day good habit counseling program demonstrated a significant improvement in oral health literacy. Early detection results showed a significant difference in oral health status among toddlers between males and females. Conclusion: Significant differences were observed between pretest and posttest results across the four community empowerment approaches.KEY WORDS:  empowerment, literacy, education, oral health status, continuum of carePeningkatan literasi kesehatan gigi melalui berbagai metode pemberdayaan pada komunitas remaja, balita dan deteksi dini kesehatan gigi anak balita sebagai data dasar pemberdayaan: Studi cross-sectionalABSTRAKPendahuluan: Upaya pemberdayaan masyarakat sangat perlu dilakukan, karena masih terbatasnya tenaga kesehatan di Indonesia dan persebarannya tidak merata serta literasi kesehatan gigi dan mulut di masyarakat masih kurang. Upaya pemberdayaan harus menjangkau segala lapisan masyarakat dan bergerak ke arah Indonesia sehat tahun 2030 yang lebih mengupayakan preventif promotif dalam melakukan pelayanan berbasis continuum of care. Tujuan penelitian menganalisis peningkatan literasi kesehatan gigi melalui berbagai metode pemberdayaan pada komunitas remaja, balita dan deteksi dini kesehatan gigi anak balita sebagai data dasar pemberdayaan. Metode: Pendekatan eksperimen jenis pretest posttest design dengan 4 metode pemberdayaan  peningkatan literasi teka-teki silang dan kartu bermain berbasis held 14 dan peningkatan literasi mengenai makanan kariogenik pada remaja dan anak balita dan dan deteksi dini kesehatan gigi pada anak balita, penyuluhan kebiasaan baik 21 hari dan deteksi dini kesehatan gigi anak balita. Jumlah sasaran diperoleh melalui purposive sampling dengan penentuan kriteria inklusi yaitu responden yang mengikuti pemberdayaan, dapat membaca dan menulis serta tidak ada gangguan pendengaran atau bicara. Kriteria ekslusi adalah responden yang tidak hadir pada saat kegiatan, tidak melakukan pengisian kuisioner/pemeriksaan dengan lengkap. Analisis data dilakukan dengan uji normalitas shapiro Wilk dan Kolmogorov Smirnov serta uji beda t-test dan Mann-Whitney.  Hasil:  Pemberdayaan pada komunitas remaja dengan literasi teka-teki silang dan kartu bermain berbasis held 14, peningkatan literasi mengenai makanan kariogenik dan penyuluhan kebiasaan baik 21 hari menunjukkan peningkatan literasi yang signifikan. Hasil deteksi dini menunjukkan terdapat perbedaan signifikan kesehatan gigi anak balita antara laki laki dan perempuan. Simpulan: Terdapat perbedaan antara hasil pretest dan postest pada ketiga metode pemberdayaan yaitu literasi remaja dan anak balita dan terdapat perbedaan status kesehatan gigi antara laki-laki dan perempuan.KATA KUNCI: pemberdayaan, literasi, edukasi, status Kesehatan gigi, continuum of care

Abstract

Introduction: Adolescents are a high-risk group for dental caries, influenced by changes in dietary patterns and inadequate oral hygiene practices. Most interventions focus solely on improving knowledge; empirical evidence linking knowledge about cariogenic foods to actual behaviors related to caries experiences in adolescents is still limited in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the correlation between knowledge of cariogenic foods, dietary behavior, and caries prevention behavior and dental caries experience in adolescents. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional analytical method with a correlational approach, involving 149 students aged 15-18 years from Senior High School of Jatinangor, Sumedang, West Java, Indonesia. The sample was selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using a newly developed questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. The questionnaire consisted of 11 items each on knowledge of cariogenic foods and dietary behavior, and 13 items on caries prevention behavior (oral hygiene behavior index). Dental caries experience was measured using the DMF-T index. Data were analyzed using the Spearman Correlation test. Results: Regarding knowledge of cariogenic foods, the majority of adolescents, 73 (48.99%), were categorized as having good knowledge. For dietary behavior, 103 (69.13%) adolescents were in the moderate category, and for caries prevention behavior, 99 (66.44%) adolescents were also in the moderate category. The average DMF-T index score was 8.11. The analysis showed no significant relationship between knowledge of cariogenic foods and dental caries experience (p = 0.264, r = 0.179). However, there was a significant relationship between dietary behavior (p = 0.000, r = 0.696) and caries prevention behavior (p = 0.000, r = 0.582) with dental caries experience. Conclusion: Dietary and caries prevention behaviors correlate with caries experience. However, knowledge about cariogenic foods does not correlate with caries experience.
