Abstract

Selective reuse of heritage buildings should be based on consideration of strategic issues of sustainable development. Research that discusses the reuse of cultural heritage buildings in the field of architecture still does not implement the concept of sustainable architecture. The purpose of the study is to obtain a strategy formulation that can be used as a parameter for adaptive implementation of reuse in cultural heritage buildings in line with sustainable development. The research took a case study of De Tjolomadoe building in Surakarta City, Indonesia. The building is a former sugar factory building currently converted as a meeting place, tourist destination, and educational communal space. The benefits of the research provide recommendations for adaptive reused strategies for cultural heritage buildings with the concept of sustainable architecture to support sustainable development. The study used in-depth observation with interview techniques and secondary data from the literature as the determination of the most important factor of the concept of sustainable architecture in optimizing the management of cultural heritage buildings. The results show that there are four architectural aspects that need to be considered so that adaptive reused cultural heritage buildings can provide sustainable benefits, i.e., the need for integration and synergy between building history, culture, environment.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of urban development in tropical regions has substantially increased local microclimate temperatures, primarily as a consequence of the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon. Landscape design is widely acknowledged as an effective passive strategy for mitigating these adverse thermal conditions. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of landscape layout and design at the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Surakarta in reducing both surface and ambient air temperatures within the surrounding neighborhood. The research adopts a quantitative methodological approach that integrates systematic temperature measurements, direct field observations, and an in-depth review of relevant literature. The investigation was carried out through the combined use of satellite imagery, in situ surface temperature measurements, and spatial analysis focusing on the distribution of vegetation, water ponds, and shading elements. The findings demonstrate that the strategic placement of vegetation and water features is capable of reducing surface temperatures by up to 5°C during daylight hours. These results underscore the critical role of landscape design as a climate-adaptive component in public building environments, particularly within tropical contexts. Moreover, the research provides a meaningful contribution to the development of tropical climate-responsive landscape design strategies aimed at enhancing building thermal comfort and supporting the realization of sustainable development in religious public spaces.

Abstract

This article describes a community service activity delivered as an educational outreach session on comprehensive sexuality education for teachers, staff, and supporting school personnel at SMP Pesantren Tahfidz Azzayadiy Sukoharjo. The activity was conducted on 15 July 2026 and attended by 32 participants. The program was designed to strengthen a respectful, pesantren-sensitive educational language for discussing body boundaries, privacy, healthy relationships, forms of sexual violence, digital violence, power relations, and safe initial responses in line with SDGs No. 4 (Quality Education) and SDGs No. 17 (Partnerships to Achieve Goals). The method included partner coordination, two material sessions, case-based discussion, question-and-answer sessions, educational media, and pre-test/post-test evaluation. Based on 20 complete questionnaires that could be compared, the mean knowledge score increased from 17.00 to 17.50 out of 19, while readiness increased from 19.35 to 20.15 out of 25. The improvement was mainly observed in understanding victim blaming, avoiding coercive questioning, avoiding unsafe confrontation between victims and alleged perpetrators, and clarifying that age-appropriate education on puberty, privacy, and body boundaries does not promote risky sexual behavior. These findings indicate short-term improvement in knowledge and readiness, not long-term behavioral change or case reduction.
