Abstract

The Indonesian Minister of Education and Culture has instructed schools to carry out online learning since March 17, 2020 along with widespread COVID-19. Among all online learning media, YouTube has become increasingly popular for learning tools, especially with young adults. Thus, this research tried to investigate the students’ perception of using YouTube in the study of English skills class. The qualitative approach with case study design was implemented to six undergraduate students of the 3rd semester who voluntarily participated in this research. The instruments used in this research are questionnaires and interviews. The data was analyzed descriptively to answer the research question. The finding reported that YouTube videos make students happy to learn English; it helps them understand the material. However, youtube makes communication with lecturers and classmates difficult without Whatsapp. In terms of strengths and weaknesses, Youtube can keep the students from feeling bored; they can study anytime and anywhere, they can also re-watch the video at will. However, YouTube videos can be a poor learning media if the videos are too long. Youtube is considered expensive without Wi-Fi access. Then the last is the possibility of signal interference.

Abstract

Abstract This research aims to report the teachers’ perspectives in using WhatsApp application in English language Teaching. This qualitative research employed case study by distributing the questionnaire and interview to five participants who used the WhatsApp Application in online English teaching and learning. This study reported that the comfortable, the reasonable cost of internet data, and the ease of communicating with the students were the importance of use of WhatsApp. The strengths of this application covered on the easy and practical application to share the information (schedule and time flexibility), the practical medium to explain the material and set the instruction before, during and post activity of teaching and learning English. The limitation of the WhatsApp covered in term of incomplete features in the WhatsApp application that the students have in their phone, some language skills that are not maximally practiced by the students, the rules that cannot be covered by the teachers and students in learning assessment and incautious checking of the students when the rules is missing. Thus, this study implied the cautious attention from the teachers on the planning, implementing and evaluation for the online teaching and learning of English. Abstract

Albeit many works provide insight into EFL's extensive reading programs, relatively few studies investigate adopting literature circles in the extensive program. To fill this void, this phenomenological case study reports on the adoption of literature circle as the instructional procedure in an extensive program in Indonesian teacher education. Thirty-one undergraduate students in the cohort, four students, were recruited as participants voluntarily. Data are derived from classroom observation, focus group discussion, and interviews. Findings revealed that the literature circle enables students to engage in online discussion actively. Pedagogically, this study implied that the literature circle could be adopted as instructional scaffolding in an extensive reading program situated in an EFL classroom. This study implies the teacher educator to provide fruitful feedback to motivate students after discussing it. Practically, undergraduate students are encouraged to practice navigating skills in exploring a wide range of texts for extensive practice in EFL text.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze undergraduate students’ formal essay writing performance using Systemic Functional Linguistics theory. This study employed a qualitative research design, embracing the characteristics of a case study. The data were obtained from the collection of samples of students’ formal essay writing. The finding revealed that there were 192 clauses found in six undergraduate students’ formal essay writing and those clauses were analyzed in the three sections. They were transitivity process, mood, and theme. there was six transitivity process found in undergraduate students’ formal essay text. There were material prprocessesmental processes, relational processes, behavioral processes, verbal processes, and existential processes. The material process was used dominant by the students. There were three mood types found in the undergraduate students’ formal essay texts. The first was indicative declarative, the second was interrogative, and the last one was imperative. Drawing from the findings of mood, the declarative mood was the most dominant among the other two moods.

Abstract

Discussing the misleading of information in interaction in Podcast is rare in language research. Considering the concept of cooperative principle and the failure of observing maxims in an interaction by Grice (1989[1967]), this research investigated the flouting and violating of maxims appears within the podcast. The data source of study is a podcast of Deddy Corbuzier with Siti Fadilah Supari, the Former of Indonesian Health Minister which entitled Siti Fadilah, Sebuah Konspirasi – Saya dikorbankan. This study discovers the participant’s failing to observe the maxims, in form of flouting and violating. There are 57 exchanges flouted as the most common participant’s failure in observing the maxims, which consists of 29 quantity maxims (50%), 14 manner maxims (25%), 9 quality maxims (16%), and 5 relation maxims (9%). Then it is followed by the violation in 7 exchanges, which occurs in 3 quality maxims (43%), 2 quantity maxims (29%), 1 relation maxim (14%) and 1 manner maxim (14%). The study finds the podcast provides the various information, since the participant provides the more contribution rather than is required as the domination of flouting in quantity maxim. This study implies the need of reconfirming of the utterance that is presumable to lead failure of information understanding.

Abstract

In this global era, it is possible to do communication with native speaker of English. Thus, the need to master communicative competence of English communication is needed. Beside face to face communication, people are also need to be able to communicate in different way, such as chat via mobile phone. It is used to call as Short Message Service or SMS. This study is aimed to know the kinds of conversation that happened in their short text message for a month. The classification of conversation is according to the Grice (1975) the formulation of Cooperative Principle in which it is classified into Generalized Conversation Implicature and Particularized Conversational Implicature. The method used in this study is Descriptive Qualitative. It is used to interpret the data according to the conversational classification. The result of this study shows that 81. 25 % the conversations are classified into Generalized Conversational Implicature, and 18. 75% conversations are classified into Particularized Conversational Implicature.

Abstract

This study described and explained the pedagogical competence of Pre service English teachers in Indonesia in implementing Project Based Learning in teaching writing narrative text during apprenticeship program. It described the implementation of Project Based Learning (PJBL) done by pre-service teachers. The steps in project based learning were getting the idea, design the project, tune the project, do the project and exhibit the project. This study used qualitative approach by describing the implementation of the PJBL. The subjects were four teacher candidates of VI semester English Department in Wiralodra University. The findings showed that the concept of PJBL not completely actualized in the classroom. This condition lead to problematic situation for the pre-service teachers. Comprehensive understanding should be taken by pre-service teacher in implementing PJBL in teaching writing narrative text. It is needed to achieve the target of English learning. Thus a deeper understanding of PJBL is needed not only the technical implementation but also cognitive implementation.

Abstract

Competency is a set of knowledge, skill and experience necessary for the future, which manifest in their activity (White, 1959). Teaching competency reflects how teacher’s ability in teaching and learning activity. Regarding to English teaching and learning to foreign learners, young learners are also exposed to have this language mastery. But Indonesian Government (see 2013 Curriculum of Elementary School) limits the subjects in Elementary School into six subjects and English is excluded. For some elementary schools, English is not give, but some others English is put as Local Content. The decision of local content here is based on the need of society, and it is happened in some elementary school in Indramayu. Thus, an English teacher for young learners in some elementary schools should reflect their competency in teaching English. She/he should be occupied with knowledge, skill and experience that needed to teach English to young learners so the purpose can meet the need. The aim of this research is to find out teaching competence of English teacher in teaching English to young learners. By conducting qualitative descriptive, this research uncovered the competency of teacher in planning the lesson, media and the implementation so it can be a consideration to put back English subject as one of main subjects in Elementary School. From the finding, it can be seen that some English teachers had made their efforts on performing good ability in teaching English such as in lesson planning, teaching media, teaching and learning activity and teaching assessment. While the challenges in teaching English to young learners were from students’ behavior. The students’ unawareness, unwillingness and laziness to study were the challenges of teaching English for young learners.

Abstract

Revolutionary Industry 4.0 demands the advanced of technology supports not only in evolutionary level of information and communication, but also in education. Seeking to promote interest of English in higher level of education, this study aims to find out students’ experiences in utilizing Blog to learn English especially writing activity. some researchers have About 15 of Non-English first-grade undergraduate students focusing on Mathematics Education Department will participate in this study. By conducting qualitative research method, questionnaires to 15 students are given to gain the data. The data from questionnaires then be interpreted for the experiences in utilizing blog in English writing activity. The result reveals that blog gave the students a place to share their ideas, exchange ideas, and improve their English as well as their writing ability. Utilizing blog in writing activity also gave them more knowledge about ICT especially in bloging. The findings also lead to some points for the teacher to consider before they utilize blog in writing activity. First, it is about time allocation and second is about involvement of larger number of students. The finding also suggest the teacher to provide longer time in doing blog project and big class is needed to have more meaningful interaction in the blog itself.

Abstract

In the 21st century, many parents try to introduce foreign language since earlier. The introduction is started since very beginning because some experts believed that the students who learn foreign language especially English on their primary schools or pre-schools, it will contribute the successful of them in learning language in the next level Ferrandino and Tirozzi as cited in MacDonell, C. (2007:1). This research is a case study. It aims to find out the use of potential rewards in kindergarten schools. This study will also investigate some challenges and efforts of five EYL teachers in teaching English. Hence this study will also focus on the benefits of potential rewards in motivating the EYL students in learning English. The result showed that social reinforcers is the most used reward and three activities that usually implemented in the class are giving applause, smiles and teacher’s signature. Then, there are two main challenges in teaching English in kindergarten school. The first is the use of technology and the second is classroom management. While the efforts used in teaching EYL are the use of media, strategy and rewards. So, the students will be more fun and enjoyable in learning English. Then, the last is the benefits. The result showed that by implementing the rewards system in the class. It can encourage the students to achieve the target learning. The students are happy to follow the instructions from the teacher and can complete the task well.
