Abstract

ASEAN has gone a long way in deepening its regional economic cooperation, particularly its trade liberalization. However, ASEAN has comparatively less intraregional trade than the European Union, whose economic integration model they aspire to emulate. As reducing tariffs was no longer an efficient way to increase trade, this study analyzes logistics performance as another factor that may affect trade. Using the gravity model with bilateral trade data from 10 ASEAN member states from 2007 to 2018 with gaps, the results show that the majority of improvements in logistics performance, by both the private sector and government alike, have positive and significant impacts on export value. This finding implies that the collaboration between the private sector and government agencies to improve logistics performance in each ASEAN member state is imperative to foster ASEAN intra-regional trade further.

Abstract

Since the first confirmed case of COVID-19 infection in Indonesia in March 2020, the pandemic has hit the economy hard, especially the Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs). This study aims to analyze the extent of the impact of the pandemic on MSMEs and the effectiveness of the government policy measures. Primary data was collected through a questionnaire administered to 2,535 MSMEs in 17 provinces during July–September 2020. The results show that MSMEs already suffered revenue slump within the second month of the pandemic and encountered both financial and non-financial hardships. The government supports and assistance was perceived as very helpful to mitigate the impact of the pandemic by the recipients. However, the programs’ distribution was hampered by either mis-targeting or lack of socialization regarding applicationrequirements, procedures and registration location. The policy, academic and managerial implications of the findings are provided.

Abstract

Since the first confirmed COVID-19 infection in Indonesia in March 2020, the pandemic has hit the economy hard, especially the Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs). This study aims to analyze MSMEs’ internal coping strategy to mitigate the impact of the pandemic, recovery strategy, and business transformation, as well as the needed government support to enable MSMEs to weather the crisis. Primary data was collected through a questionnaire administered to 2,535 MSMEs in 17 provinces. The results show that MSMEs’ coping strategy differs across firm size, sector, region, and owners’ gender. MSMEs also differ in their recovery path and medium-term business transformation in production, capital, marketing, and lines of business. Further, MSMEs require both financial and non-financial assistance, in addition to enabling the business environment to recover their businesses sustainably. The policy, academic and managerialimplications of the findings are provided.

Abstract

The integration of computing technology and its widespread adoption by society has transformed online games from solitary and individualistic activities into socially embedded environments. This transformation is driven by institutional pressures that shape consumption behavior, while also eliciting varying levels of individual resistance. These patterns of social interaction are significantly influenced by demographic and individual playing characteristics. This study aims to examine how these characteristics affect consumption behavior in online games. Adopting principal component analysis and regression methods based on previous research, the study found that institutional influence is strongly associated with playing duration and the desire to become a professional player. Meanwhile, individual resistance is influenced by age, playing time, and the same desire. Conducted in Jakarta, the findings reveal that structural pressure is primarily shaped by playing characteristics, while resistance is affected by both demographics (specifically age) and individual playing characteristics.

Abstract

Research Originality: This study constructs the first regional Input–Output (RIO) table for Toba Regency in 2023, utilizing the iterative RAS technique to adapt provincial coefficients to local macroeconomic data. Research Objectives: To estimate sectoral interlinkages, multiplier effects, and labor intensity for Toba Regency, and to identify strategic sectors that can drive regional economic growth and inform evidence-based policymaking. Research Methods: The 2016 North Sumatra I–O table was regionalized into a 22-sector Toba Regency table through RAS, with row and column sums adjusted to match Toba Regency GRDP by industry and expenditure. The resulting table was analyzed to calculate backward and forward linkages, output multipliers, and labor intensity. Empirical Results: The local economy is primarily driven by paper manufacturing, agriculture, and construction, while the tourism sector contributes only 6.2 percent of output and exhibits weak forward linkages. This finding suggests limited integration of tourism-related activities into the local supply chain. Electricity, business services, and agriculture emerge as growth drivers, while wage disparities persist in low-productivity service sectors. Implications: The approach can guide other subnational governments in producing localized Input–Output (I–O) tables, thereby enhancing evidence-based policymaking. Abstract

The 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games is the most significant event in Asian Games history regarding contested sports, participating nations, and athletes. This study identifies the long-term benefits of the event to the host country, focusing on the international attendees’ propensity to revisit Indonesia after the event. We administered a survey throughout the two weeks of the event, yielding usable responses from 1,914 international attendees, including athletes, officials, journalists, committees, and spectators. We use the survey results to describe attendees’ evaluation of the event and Indonesia as the host country. Further, this study also estimates a multinomial logistic regression to identify the association between tourist characteristics and their intention to revisit Indonesia beyond the event. The results show that providing information and communication technology, transportation arrangement, culture, and hosting cities positively correlate with the propensity to return. In contrast, the previous visit to Indonesia has the opposite effect. International respondents mainly express their desire to revisit Indonesia on a long-stay plan. Lastly, we also discuss the academic and practical implications of our findings.
