Abstract

Shark is a cartilaginous fish that is widely hunted because it has high economic value. The waters of Aceh are directly adjacent to the Indian Ocean and the Malacca Strait making it a preferred habitat for pelagic fish, especially sharks. Information on shark species landed in the waters west and east of Aceh is very limited due to difficulties in identification and commonly used local names. This study aimed to determine the types of sharks landed in Banda Aceh, Meulaboh, Langsa, Southwest Aceh and Simeulu and to find out specifically what species of sharks are most often landed in Aceh waters. Primary data gathering consisted of four stages, namely sample collection, identification using identification books, molecular identification cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and phylogenetic analysis. The results of the molecular analysis of 46 tissue samples from five locations identified 13 species of sharks, namely Carcharhinhus sorrah, Carcharhinhus amboinensis, Triaenodon obesus, Isurus oxyrinchus, Sphyrna zygaena, Sphyrna lewini, Loxodon macrorhinus, Hemipristis elongaria, Stagostoma fasciatum, Nebrius ferrugineus, Chilloscyllium punctatum, Isurus oxyrinchus, Alopias pelagicus, Alopias supercillosus and 1 species of rays, namely Rhynchobatus australiae. Phylogenetic tree reconstruction using the Neighbor Joining method of 610 basepairs consisting of two large clades separates the species Alopias pelagicus and Isurus oxyrichus with Carcharhinus sorrah, Sphyrna lewini, Loxodon macrorhinus and Rhyncobatus australiae with boostrap values of 87% and 64%. The haplotype diversity shown ranged from 0.667-0.889 while the nucleotide diversity ranged from 0.001-0.097. These values indicates high diversity because of the variance in the number of species found. Keywords:BarcodeCOISharks catchAlopias supercillosusSphyrna lewini

Abstract

Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) is one of the commercial fish in Indonesia. The phenomenon of climate change due to global warming has affected the life of aquatic biota, including fish. The objectives of the present study were to determine a critical thermal maximum (CTMax) and the behavior of Barramundi (L. calcarifer) due to the increase in water temperature. The research was conducted at the Fishing Technology Laboratory, Faculty of Marine and Fisheries, Universitas Syiah Kuala in February 2021. The experiment was conducted in 10 aquariums equipped with heaters. The initial temperature of the treatment was 28oC and increased gradually every one minute by 0.2oC. The results showed that the abnormal behavior of Barramundi fingerling was started to appear at 37oC where the fish began to swim fast, then swim sideways at 38oC-39oC, hit the container wall at 39oC-40oC, jumped and weakened then dead at 40oC and 41oC. The average critical temperature of Barramundi fingerling was recorded at a temperature of 41oC within 65 minutes. Therefore, it is concluded that the Barramundi (L. calcarifer) display an abnormal behavior above the temperature of 35oC, however, they can survive up to 42oC exposure for 70 minutes. Keywords:Critical thermal maximumTemperature riseGlobal warming

Abstract

Abstract. Fuel is one of important components in fishing activity. The objectives of this research were to analyze the need and the receiver of fuel subsidy in Aceh Besar t as well as to analyze the problems that faced by fisherman in Aceh Besar district. The survey was done on June-August 2012 in five sub-district in Aceh Besar namely: (1) Baitussalam, (2) Mesjid Raya, (3) Leupung (4) Lhoknga dan (5) Mesjid Raya. The result shown that the average cost of one trip of fishing activities in Aceh Besar were Rp700.000. The lowest operational cost was found in Seulimum (Rp96.200 per trip) and the highest was found in Baitussalam sub-district (Rp1, 793,710 per trip). Fuel was the biggest cost for fishing activity; it was ranged 40%-73% with average 57.9%. The lowest proportion of fuel consumption was found in Baitussalam sub-district and the highest was found in Lhoknga sub-district. In average, the fisherman’s fuel consumption was 1,237L. per month; with total subsidy was Rp 5,824,737 per fisherman per month. The profit will be decreased up to 89.5% if there was no fuel subsidy. In addition, the result also shown that the fisherman in Aceh Besar did not have any skill to generate their alternative income. As the consequence, in the future there is a need to develop programs to generate the alternative livelihood for Aceh Besar fisherman as well as their family.Keywords. Abstract

Abstract. The objective of the present study was to analyze the budgetary trends and the effectiveness of fisheries subsidies in Aceh Besar district. The literature and survey methods were utilized in this study. The secondary data of Aceh Besar’s budget documents in the period of 2010-2012 and key person interviews with fishermen leaders were conducted to analysis the subsidy trend and fishermen perception. The data was collected in May through July 2012. The results showed the budget allocation to the fisheries sector were increased from year to year, in 2010 the total budget for the fisheries sector was Rp1, 9 billions (equivalent to 0.34% of total buget or 1.40% of the development budget allocation/indirect consumption), in it was increased to Rp2, 9 billion in 2011 (or 0.42% of total budget or 1.47% of the development budget allocation), then increased sharply in 2012 to Rp9, 2 billion (an increase of over 630%) from the previous year, equivalent to 1.11% of the total budget. In 2010, the proportion of subsidies were given mostly for aquaculture sub-sector, which reached 84% of the total budget that was managed by the Department of Marine and Fisheries of Aceh Besar, whereas in 2011 the proportion of subsidies occurred balance between aquaculture and capture fishery sub sectors. However, in 2012 most of the budget DKP Aceh Besar (63%) was allocated to the capture fishery sub-sector. The results of the study showed that fisheries subsidies by the Government of Aceh Besar district especially in the last two years have not yet met the criteria of sustainable fisheries subsidies.
