Abstract

Abstrak: Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PKM ) ini bertujuan untuk memberikan sosialisasi simulasi pembelajaran ESP yang berpusat pada siswa dan pendekatan Outcome Based Learning. Kegiatan PKM ini dilaksanakan di SMK Pasundan 3 Bandung pada bulan Juli tahun 2022 yang melibatkan enam orang dosen Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris STKIP Pasundan Cimahi dan siswa siswi kelas dua dan tiga SMK Pasundan 3 Bandung. Kegiatan PKM ini berlandaskan pendekatan GBA (Genre Based Approach) dimana siswa siswi SMK terlibat dalam simulasi percakapan di dunia perhotelan melalui authentic materials dalam kegiatan role-play. Hasil dari simulasi ini menunjukkan respon positif dari para siswa yang terlibat. Diantaranya mereka dapat meningkatkan kemampuan interaksi menggunakan Bahasa Inggris yang menyenangkan, memahami materi otentik tentang perhotelan yang dapat membantu mereka terjundi dunia pekerjaan serta para siswa dapat meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris mereka untuk menghasilkan outcome yang sesuai dengan penutur aslinya

Abstract

Literacy is crucial for the height of a nation’s civilization. However, Indonesia’s literacy rate is still regarded as poor. To address the problem, Kemdikbud creates Kamjar (Kampus Mengajar), a program for college students to help relieve literacy issues in rural areas. Given that many students in remote areas are still illiterate despite having reached school age, the study created reading clinics to encourage students to learn to read by embracing personalized learning principles. Its purpose is to find out how one-on-one reading clinics can assist students who struggle with reading. Four students of an elementary school in Lembang West Jave were selected to participate in the study. Each one has a different age, personality, and different literacy skills. The instructions for those four students were created in such a way as to satisfy their needs. Employing a case study as the design of the research, the study utilized observation and interviews as data collection. The result of the study showed that one-on-one reading clinic can act as a good strategy for helping inconsistent struggling readers. However, collaboration with other peers is still needed to help the beginning readers assess their achievements, agency, and ownership over their learning.

Abstract

A Song is a good medium for children to learn about culture. Through songs, songwriters can convey their native culture, which they regard as valuable for future generations to inherit. There are several songs for children in Indonesia written by talented songwriters that portray the distinctive qualities of Indonesia’s culture. For the listeners to recognize the Indonesian virtues implied in the songs while simultaneously enjoying the songs, the songwriters demonstrated some strategies that allowed them to convey the intended culture. This study attempted to determine how songwriters managed to pass culture through songs and what culture they tried to convey. A semiotic analysis, including textual analysis, thematic progression, and sign analysis, was conducted on five popular songs for children from four well-known songwriters in Indonesia. The results showed that the songwriters utilized the material process to help the children visualize the content of the songs and used existential phrases and a variety of marked themes, including conditions, adjuncts, and dependent themes, to convey many key points in a single sentence. In addition, the songwriters also employed a combination of multiple thematic progressions to develop the subject, zigzag thematic development to maintain the text's logical relation, and reiterative thematic progression to emphasize the theme of the text. The findings are valuable as references, especially for those who wish to write music for young listeners

Abstract

Google Translate (GT) is a tool commonly used by those who learn translation in higher education. While the research on GT mostly evaluated GT through experimental design, very few studies have focused on student perceptions of GT. Hence, this research intends to investigate their students’ attitudes of GT performance. 24 students of higher education in Cimahi participated in the study. The data about students’ attitude include behavior, cognitive, and affective attitude. They were gathered through questionnaire and interview. The result revealed that in behavioral attitude, the students’ often use GT to check the meaning of unknown word and translating a sentence. Meanwhile, the cognitive attitude indicated that few students assume that GT is ethically acceptable regardless of how it is used because it is helpful in the language learning process. In the affective attitude, GT is positive because they felt like using GT in translation. Even, some of them felt helped by GT’s assistance and the other reason was GT was easy to use. In short, student’s regard GT as a useful tool in translation depending on the way how one uses the tool.

Abstract

The research described here investigates the experience of the students in online learning during COVID-19 Pandemic. Methods of the investigation was qualitative case study approach involving two students from different Senior High Schools in Cimahi. This research specifically focused on the struggle of students in online EFL learning. The analysis of the students’ observation, interview and documentation revealed some strategies they used to overcome their problems. Results discovered that the Pandemic had made the students experienced uncertain learning journey. The online learning provided special challenges for the students and some strategies showed the important role of student agency in making them stay motivated.

Abstract

This research aimed at revealing teachers’ challenges in teaching reading and their strategies used to overcome those challenges. To fulfil those aims, the researcher used descriptive qualitive as this research method, and collect the data by spreading questionnaire and conduct semi-structured interview. Ten English teachers were involved as research sample. They were not only given questionnaire deal with the challenges in teaching reading, but also interviewed regarding to the strategies their used to overcome those challenges. From the data gathered, it revealed that the challenges mostly originated from students’ lack of vocabulary mastery and their motivation to actively involved in classroom participation. Regarding to those problems, the teacher then used some strategies including brainstorming and pair works. In fact, however, those strategies could help the teacher in engaging the students in teaching reading.
