Abstract

It is crucial that learning media be developed alongside the development of a more modern era. This concerns not just classroom learning but unorthodox forms of education, as is practiced in the Al-Qur'an Learning Center (TPA). Currently, TPA is just a place to learn to read the Qur'an with simple teaching and learning techniques and religion-related media. The existing game cards revolve around Islam, among others. On the other hand, thematic learning media products related to health and environmental issues that align with Islamic values were initiated. A 4D model (Define, Design, Development, and Dissemination) of Research and Development (RnD) was used to create D-Qalami: Guess the Meaning and Action Card, an Islamic educational media for the health and environmental aspects of the Santri TPA (abbreviated as D-Qalami). It comes as unique, practical, and informative folding cards that make remembering easy. This product presents aspects of personal health in a manner that is in line with Islamic values. D-Qalami is equipped with interesting supporting books and can be studied by various groups and ages, especially children.

Abstract

The ways students learn nowadays have changed significantly since the Covid 19 pandemic in 2019. Students today need different ways of teaching as they also have different learning styles. This study is intended to investigate how much the Indonesian primary and secondary English teachers are technologically literate, identify the challenges they face in teaching using technology and describe their hopes and expectation in their professional work as English teachers. Questionnaires in the form of google form were used to collect the data from all the participants, while interview was used to collect the data from the selected participants. The findings showed that most of the participants possessed high level of digital literacy, suggesting that they had the skills needed to help them teach online classes using the available online teaching platforms. They seemed to enjoy teaching online classes as they were capable of exploiting the online resources as the teaching materials, developing the available resources and even creating the digital teaching materials and using it in their online classes. The most serious problem they had was lack of IT knowledge in regard with the new online teaching platforms and internet connection. If they had to use the new online teaching platform, they had to learn it on their own, usually through YouTube and teach how to use it to their students. The classic problem, the internet connection, still occurred among the teachers and it caused problems in delivering the teaching materials and assessing the students’ work. This implies that the policy makers need to design professional development program which would help the Indonesia English teachers cope with their technological issues.

Abstract

Courses in TEYL (Teaching English to Young Learners) at the tertiary education level have been conducted in different universities including at the English Department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. One of the courses is TEYL Program Development (TEYL PD). It is to develop materials and/or program in TEYL. Since there’s not yet specific and detailed information regarding its assessment in the class of TEYL PD implementing project-based learning, this research aims to design instruments to measure the learning achievement in TEYL PD course. This research utilizes Research and Development (R&D) with ADDIE model. The development process encompasses five steps i.e. analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate. There are two rubrics resulted for the course to assess the students in doing the project on TEYL PD. The first is the rubric to assess group’s performance and the second is the one to measure individual performance related to the group project. The instrument for the group performance contains 7 aspects (stages of the project, data collection, target accomplishment, reporting, knowledge, attitudes, and skills). Individual performance was based on peer ranking on the aspects on the students’ contribution, collaboration, discipline and communication.  At this preliminary study, implementing the instruments was conducted by the test of readability and content validity by an expert in English language teaching. Further, the evaluation was realized based on their feedback. Further research is in demand to investigate the use of the instruments in the classroom setting on TEYL PD course.

Abstract

Islamic lectures are potent media for people to influence others, specific groups, and society. Based on this case, this research aims to identify and analyze the types of persuasive strategies used by Zakir Naik in his Islamic Lecture under the theme “Islam and the 21st Century,” which took place at the Oxford Union. This descriptive and qualitative research used the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach proposed by Teun A. Van Dijk. Furthermore, Aristotle’s Rhetorical Theory of Persuasion was employed to support the analysis of how persuasive strategies were applied in the Islamic lecture. The data of this research were the sentences of the speech text transcription, which contained persuasive strategies spoken by Zakir Naik in his “Islam and the 21st Century” Oxford Union Islamic Lecture uploaded on his YouTube Channel. The results show three categories of “socio-cognitive” CDA by Teun A. Van Dijk, namely, text, cognition, and social context, which are used to analyze the speech text and its relation to social and power. Concerning this, the persuasive strategies analysis shows that Zakir Naik uses three types of rhetorical proofs from a total of 121 data, which include ethical proof (ethos), logical proof (logos), and emotional proof (pathos). Ethos is the most common rhetorical proof in his Islamic lecture, making up 63.5% of the speech. It is followed by pathos (33.58% of the speech) and logos (27.22% of the speech).

Abstract

The present study analyzed the use of conversation analysis (CA) in online interaction. The aim of the study is to describe the patterns of turn taking, repair, and the adjacency pairs in the online conversation. Employing a qualitative research methodology, data were taken from an online conversation about how to learn English, taking place in YouTube between a professor of English language teaching and the host who is a professor of education. The conversation was mainly in Bahasa Indonesia. The data were first transcribed in Bahasa Indonesia and translated into English. The study found some structures of exchange in the communication and the patterns of turn taking, repairs and adjacency pairs evident from the analysis of conversation. There are some patterns of turn-taking and adjacency pairs along the online conversation. The turn constructional units vary in syntactical forms. In addition, both self-initiated and other initiated-self repairs occurred. The study drew the implication of CA to language teaching. CA contributes to language teaching in terms of offering not only the authentic real-life communication, but also the authentic spoken interaction which will encourage learners to be able to produce authentic utterances.
