Abstract

Biodiesel is an alternative fuel to a diesel engine that can replace or reduce the use of petroleum diesel. PFAD (Palm Fatty Acid Distillate) is a by-product of physical refining of crude palm oil products and is contained of free fatty acid (FFA) more than 85 wt.%. Esterification is a chemical reaction used to produce biodiesel from feedstocks with high FFA. Hydroxyapatite derived from waste fish bones has been effectively utilized as a support for preparation of the heterogeneous copper acid catalyst. The Copper- Hydroxyapatite catalyst has been prepared through wet-impregnation.This study intends to produce biodiesel with Cu- Hydroxyapatite catalyst derived from fishbone waste in esterification of PFAD and methanol. Esterification reaction parameters were varied to obtain the maximum yield of biodiesel. Optimization of esterification reaction parameters such as methanol to PFAD ratio, catalyst loading, and reaction temperature was carried out by Response Surface Methodology-Central Composite Design (RSM-CCD). The optimum yield obtained using regression models were found to be reaction temperature 62oC, catalyst to PFAD weight 1,82 wt.%, and PFAD to methanol molar ratio 1:8,28. The reaction under the optimum condition predicted at 92,52% of biodiesel yield.

Abstract

Dyes substances from the textile industry wastewater are internationally classified as poisonous substances, and they cause a severe threat to humans being and other living things, even at low concentrations. Therefore, this waste has to be treated before discharge to the environment. One of the most effective processes for degrading dyes is photocatalytic oxidation. Two different pretreatments of Spent bleaching earth (SBE) from palm oil refinery plant were applied to produce catalyst supports. The SBEe support was prepared by extraction using n-hexane, SBEc by calcination at 500 oC, and then used as a support for CeFeO3/SBEe and CeFeO3/SBEc perovskite catalyst. Both catalysts were tested for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) using photocatalytic oxidation. The properties of catalysts were characterized using some characterization methods, such as thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with Dispersive Energy X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), specific surface area (BET) and pore size analysis. CeFeO3/SBEe catalyst was found more efficient in photocatalytic oxidation for MB compared with the CeFeO3/SBEc catalyst. CeFeO3/SBEe catalyst could degrade 99.5% of MB during 120 min, at the condition of 25 mg/L MB, 1.0 g/L catalyst, and pH 7. The effect of pH on the performance of the catalyst followed the order of pH 7 > pH 9 > pH 5. Moreover, the CeFeO3/SBEe catalyst demonstrated excellent activity in the degradation of MB, displaying that CeFeO3/SBEe is a favorable catalyst for water purification.

Abstract

The LaMnO3 perovskite catalyst was successfully synthesized using a simple solid-state reaction method. This catalyst is used to activate PMS in the organic content's degradation process in the secondary effluent palm oil mill (POMSE). The organic content in POMSE is equivalent to the COD value; thus the COD value is used as a parameter for the process's success. The catalyst performance test shows that the catalyst effectively reduces COD, and the waste meets the maximum threshold allowed by government regulations. The variables that affect the catalyst's effectiveness were the calcination temperature of the catalyst, catalyst loading, PMS concentration, and temperature. The temperature of calcination affects the perovskite crystal formation; the higher the temperature, the more active catalyst obtained. The catalyst loading and PMS concentration variables affect the degradation process of organic levels in POMSE; at low levels, the higher the catalyst loading and PMS concentrations will increase the effectiveness of the degradation process, but at certain levels, the addition of catalysts and PMS reduces the effectiveness of the process. LaMnO3-800oC catalyst presents the highest activity of 92.7% and met the allowable threshold of COD < 300 mg/L. The sequence for removal of COD among the three catalysts with an order of LaMnO3-800oC > LaMnO3-700oC > LaMnO3-600 oC. The pseudo-second-order kinetics equation fits the experimental data. The effect of temperature on the kinetics constant follows the Arrhenius equation. Furthermore, the catalyst obtained was stable, with no significant decrease in catalysts activity up to three runs.

Abstract

Various types of waste are found in TPA Muara Fajar Timur, Rumbai District, Pekanbaru. One of the waste that does not decompose is styrofoam. If styrofoam is not handled seriously, it will have an impact on the environment and endanger the surrounding community. Styrofoam waste contains polystyrene foam which contains hazardous materials for health and the environment. For this reason, efforts should be made to handle the styrofoam waste, namely by recycling styrofoam into useful and economical products. One of the uses of Styrofoam waste is making latex glue. Latex glue is a product that is widely used by the community so that if it is produced it will be able to meet the needs both for themselves and for the needs of the community. Latex glue is made from styrofoam by adding toluene and surfactants (sodium lauryl sulfate / SLS) or by adding gasoline to Styrofoam. The results obtained were that the community could understand and be able to make latex glue. The results of the success questionnaire show the high interest and benefits of this activity. This shows that this activity has been successfully implemented in Muara Fajar Timur Village, Rumbai District, Pekanbaru.

Abstract

Surfactant (surface active agent) is a chemical compound used to reduce the surface tension of the liquid. Surfactants are divided into four groups: anionic, nonionic, cationic and amphoteric. The most widely used surfactant is an anionic surfactant which is synthesized from Linier Alkylbenzene Sulphonate (LABS) a petroleum base surfactant. LABS is not ecofriendly, low resistant to high salinity levels, hard to degradable, expensive and still imported. Methyl Ester Sulfonate (MES) is an anionic surfactant which is currently being developed. These surfactants can be produced from POME. MES produced by sulfonation reaction with addition of sulfonation agents. In this research sodium bisulfite used as sulfonation agent. The aims of this research was to synthesized MES from POME and Sodium Bisulfite (NaHSO3) and Calcium Oxide as the catalyst, to characterize the product, and to study the effects of mole ratio and stirring speed of surface tension and emulsion stability MES. Abstract

The decline in fossil fuel sources has prompted research into finding renewable fuels. One of environmentally friendly energy sources with high efficiency is by producing liquid oil from palm oil empty fruit bunch (EFB) and coal. Pre-treatment of empty fruit bunches using NaOH and various concentrations of H2O2, various ratios of EFB/coal, the ratio of CaO catalyst, chemical and physical characteristics were studied to produce the better liquid oil yield. The H2O2 concentrations are 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3%. The ratios of EFB/coal (R) are 0/100, 25/75, 50/50, and 75/25. The ratios of catalyst CaO/raw material are 0%, 3%, 6%, and 9%. It ran at 400 °C with 100 mL/min nitrogen gas flowing during one hour. The results showed that adding sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide in the EFB pre-treatment increased the liquid oil yield. With an increase in the EFB/coal ratio, the liquid oil yield increased. Co-pyrolysis treated EFB and Coal with a ratio of 75:25 produced 32% liquid oil yield, but the liquid oil yield decreased to 19% with the addition of 9% CaO catalyst. However, the addition of CaO catalyst reduces the acidity and increases the calorific value of the liquid oil.
