Abstract

This study aims to evaluate vocabulary learning in improving the language proficiency of Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) learners. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observations, interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that systematic and varied vocabulary learning evaluations, including written tests, oral tests, and task-based assessments, effectively improve learners’ vocabulary mastery. In addition, continuous feedback helps learners correct language errors and enhance both receptive and productive language skills. Therefore, vocabulary learning evaluation plays an important role in supporting the improvement of BIPA learners’ language proficiency. This study recommends that BIPA instructors develop more varied, contextual, and continuous vocabulary evaluation models to support optimal learning outcomes

Abstract

Globalization has increased international interest in learning Indonesian through BIPA (Indonesian for Foreign Speakers), which emphasizes not only linguistic aspects but also social and cultural contexts. This article aims to examine the concept of sociolinguistics, its application in BIPA learning based on local culture, and its impacts and challenges. The method used is a literature review. The findings show that a sociolinguistic approach enhances learners’ communicative competence through understanding social context, language variation, and politeness norms. The integration of local culture provides authentic contexts that strengthen pragmatic and intercultural competence. However, its implementation still faces challenges such as limited teaching materials and teachers’ competencies. Therefore, the development of local culture-based teaching materials and the improvement of teachers’ competencies are needed to make learning more effective and contextual.
