Abstract

The appropriate use of instructional media can help teachers deliver learning materials effectively to children aged 4–6 years. One highly effective medium for presenting learning content is picture media. This study aimed to describe and explain how picture media are used to support letter recognition, imitation/pronunciation, and reading letter combinations into syllables in early reading instruction for children aged 4–6 years. The research employed a descriptive qualitative design. The main research instrument was the researcher, supported by interview and observation guides, stationery, and an audio recorder. The data source comprised children aged 4–6 years. Seven children participated: four boys aged 6 years, two girls aged 5 years, and one girl aged 6 years. The data focused on recognizing letter forms and sounds, imitating/pronouncing vowels and consonants, and reading letter combinations into syllables using picture media at TK/PAUD Al-Ikhlas Sawah Lawe, Koto Parik Gadang Diateh Subdistrict, South Solok Regency. Data were collected through observation, interviews, note-taking, and audio recording. The findings indicate that in introducing alphabet letters, children made pronunciation errors with letters such as /m/, /n/, /r/, and /q/. In imitation/pronunciation activities, children still required assistance in pronouncing several vowels and consonants. In reading letter combinations into syllables, children also needed support to read syllables in words such as sepeda (s-e-p-e-d-a), mobil (m-o-b-i-l), buku (b-u-k-u), ember (e-m-b-e-r), and sepatu (s-e-p-a-t-u).

Abstract

This study aims to describe (1) the accuracy of students’ procedural text structure and (2) inaccuracies in structure, writing, and meaning in procedural texts produced by eleventh-grade students at SMK Negeri 6 Padang. The study employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. The data consisted of 25 student procedural texts collected through document analysis. The researcher served as the primary instrument. Data analysis followed qualitative procedures: data reduction, data display, and verification. The results show that students’ texts contained the three essential components of procedural text structure: goal, steps (instructions), and reaffirmation (closing). In addition, accuracy was found to be more dominant than inaccuracy in both writing and meaning, although writing errors were still identified in some texts. Recommendation: instruction on procedural texts should emphasize editing practice (spelling, word choice, and sentence clarity) and strengthening the semantic alignment of each step so that structurally complete texts are consistently accompanied by linguistic accuracy and clear meaning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze seventh-grade students’ difficulties in writing poetry and their implications for Indonesian language instruction at SMP Negeri 1 Siberut Utara, Kepulauan Mentawai Regency. The research employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. The participants were seventh-grade students. Data were collected through a poetry-writing test. Data trustworthiness was strengthened through triangulation. Poetry analysis used a modified rubric adapted from Nurgiyantoro (2016), covering four assessment aspects: diction, imagination, figurative language, and theme. The findings indicate that students experienced difficulties across all four aspects. In terms of diction, difficulties were reflected in inaccurate word relationships and less engaging word choices. Regarding imagination, students were not yet able to develop imagery and poetic visualization adequately. For figurative language, students faced obstacles in using figures of speech as a distinctive feature of poetry. With respect to theme, students had difficulty determining a clear and consistent theme. The study recommends more structured poetry-writing instruction focusing on diction selection, imagery development, figurative language use, and theme determination, supported by the use of model poems, concrete examples, and specific feedback for each assessment aspect.

Abstract

This study was motivated by students’ still low ability in writing exposition texts, particularly in developing a thesis statement, constructing arguments supported by evidence, and presenting a logical reiteration. The study aimed to describe the ability to write exposition texts through the implementation of the Discovery Learning model among Phase X students of SMA Negeri 8 Padang. This research employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive method. The subjects were 36 students of Phase X.E4 selected through purposive sampling from a population of 350 Phase X students. The data were collected through a performance test in writing exposition texts and documentation. The data were analyzed by selecting students’ written work, scoring it based on an assessment rubric covering the opening (thesis), body (arguments and evidence), and closing (reiteration), converting the scores into grades, calculating the mean scores, and then describing the results according to the assessment classification. The findings showed that the students’ ability in writing exposition texts was classified as very good, with an overall mean score of 86.72. In detail, the thesis aspect obtained a mean score of 84.26, which was categorized as good; the arguments and evidence aspect obtained 88.89, which was categorized as very good; and the reiteration aspect obtained 88.03, which was also categorized as very good. The implication of this study is that the Discovery Learning model can be used as an effective alternative in improving students’ ability to write exposition texts in a more logical, systematic, and well-directed manner.
