Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Complete denture serves to replace natural teeth, improve aesthetics, mastication, speech function and protect periodontal tissue. Over time of its using, denture becomes loose, so it is not comfort to use. The loose of dentures can be caused by resorption of residual ridges, systemic diseases and heavy occlusion loads result in lose of retention and stability. Management of loose dentures can be performed by relining or even rebasing the dentures. Purpose: to discuss the indication and contraindication of relining and rebasing to restore the retention and stability of loose dentures. Conclusion: Clinician must understand the indications, contraindications and materials used for the relining and rebasing procedure.

Abstract

A 50-year-old female came to Hasanuddin University Dental Hospital Makassar with chief complaint of masticatory problems due to a denture that had been used for 9 years was loose, causing pain when eating. Intra-oral examina-tion showed that the patient is completely edentulous. The mandibular alveolar ridge had resorbed. The patient was treated with an implant-supported overdenture with magnetic retention in the mandible. The maxilla is treated with conventional denture as there was still part of the maxilla that could be used for retention. After obtaining the pati-tient's consent and confirming that the patient had no parafunction, two implants were placed on the body of the mandible using single stage implants. Right and left implants were 12.0 mm long and 4.0 mm diameter. Both the magnet and the attachment shield were coated with titanium nitride (TiN). It is concluded that magnetically implant-supported overdenture can restore masticatory function and the quality of life.

Abstract

A 42-year-old woman was referred to the Department of Prosthodontics, Hasanuddin University Dental Hospital with speech, swallowing and chewing difficulties caused by a fractured and non-reusable acrylic obturator. The patient had been using the obturator since maxillary tumor resection in 2012, which resulted in a significant and deep defect in the right maxillary region. Intraoral examination revealed a defect in the midline of the palate that extended to the left alveolar bone, and 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 16 were edentulous. The maxillary defect did not appear inflamed or infected, and the surrounding area appeared normal. The treatment plan was fabrication of a maxillofacial skeletal partial denture to rehabilitate the maxillary defect. Primary impressions were made with irreversible hydrocolloid ma-terial with a stock tray to obtain a study model. Custom tray was made for individual impressions with polyvinyl si-loxane material to obtain working models. A survey was conducted, and framework and bite rim were made. Maxil-lary denture was designed with Akers clasps at 35, 37, RPI at 45, full palatal palate as main connector. The denture framework was tried on, followed by determination of vertical dimensions. Denture alignment was done in the articu-lator using A3 color. The was prostheses were tried in and evaluated of retention, articulation, phonetics, and aes-thetics; then sent to dental laboratory for processing and the obturator was then inserted into the patient's mouth. Pati-ent follow-up was scheduled 24 hours and 1 week after insertion. It is concluded that the maxillofacial partial den-ture is a rehabilitation device that can result in decent retention and stabilization, especially in cases of acquired de-fects. The prosthesis can improve patient adaptation and ability with speech, mastication and swallowing functions.

Abstract

The problem often found in patients wearing a complete denture with a flat ridge condition is the lack of retention and stabili-ty, which interferes with masticatory function. These conditions can be overcome not only in the moulding process, but also in determining the occlusion concept during tooth preparation. To overcome this problem, the concept of lingualised occlusion is a solution and is expected to improve retention, stability and better support in flat ridge cases. This article reports the concept of lingualised occlusion in denture preparation in the case of a patient with mandibular posterior flat ridge. A 62-year-old woman came to the Department of Prosthodontics of RSGM Unhas with complaints of difficulty chewing food due to the loss of all her teeth. The patient had used a denture but now felt loose and wanted to make a new denture so she could chew well. It was concluded that the concept of occlusion in patients with flat ridge uses the concept of lingualised occlusion which can im-prove retention, denture stability, and patient mastication efficiency.

Abstract

Since the outbreak of Covid-19, with every mutation, it has posed various challenges to human life and in health sciences. Patients on corticosteroids or with comorbidities like diabetes mellitus are at increased risk of post Covid-19 infections like mucormycosis. Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic infection, often associated with immunocom-promised states. Fungal invasion of the hard palate, paranasal sinuses, orbits and brain is the commonest form of rhinocerebral mucormycosis. Among the medical professionals involved in managing patients with mucormycosis, maxillofacial prosthodontists are responsible for prosthetic treatment of lost oral and maxillofacial structures, help-ing patients to socialize and have an acceptable quality of life after surgical treatment. This literature review is aimed to describe maxillofacial prosthodontist challenge in rehabilitation of mucormycosis post Covid-19 infection. It is concluded that prosthodontist face many challenges in mucormycosis rehabilitation. Prosthodontist should be ca-pable to early detection and diagnosis, carefull in planning and designing the prosthesis, wise in using of softliner material, and should always maintain long-term follow-up if any sign of lesion recurrence.

Abstract

A problem in complete denture (CD) treatment is the patient's ability to use and adapt to the denture. If not resolved properly, the denture is considered unsatisfactory by the patient and has an impact on oral health and quality of life. This study provides a des-cription of the quality of life of CD users with flabby ridge on the level of patient satisfaction with speech function, chewing, appear-ance, and comfort using a denture. Analytical observational research with a cross-sectional design was conducted using the me-thod of direct examination and interview using a questionnaire. Based on age group, there is a significant relationship (p<0.05) between the age group of 51-60 years and the age group of 61-70 years with patient satisfaction in the mastication dimension and the overall OHIP-14 dimension obtained a mean value of 16.82 with SD 0.75. It was concluded that the quality of life of CD users with flabby ridge was good; overall the study subjects were satisfied with their dentures
