Abstract

Writing is the important skill that must be master by the students. However, the students had the several problems that caused the Minimum Competence Criterion (MCC) couldn’t achieve by the students they are: the students aren’t able to master the language features, generic structure, and social function of descriptive text; the topic is unfamiliar; the students don’t find interesting and appropriate writing technique; and the students are difficult to generate their ideas. The research aims to improve students’ writing skill in descriptive text by using Mind Mapping Technique at the Tenth Grade of SMK Swasta Kristen BNKP Luzamanu in 2022/2023. The research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR) and it was applied in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of two meetings and each meeting consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Cycle I showed that there were 3 (10,71%) students in excellent category, 3 (10,71%) students in good category, 8 (28,57%) students in average category, 9 (32,14%) students in poor category, and 5 (17,85%) students who classify in very poor category. The result show that most of the students couldn’t pass the MCC. In the Cycle II, it showed that there were 13 students (46,42) who could be classified excellent category and there 15 (53,57) students who could be classified good category. There was no student classified in poor and very poor category”. The average of students’ value was 81. It can be concluded that Mind Mapping Technique improved the students’ writing skill especially in writing descriptive text.

Abstract

In learning process that occurred at the tenth grade of SMK Negeri 1 Tuhemberua, the students need to master vocabulary in English learning. Therefore, the objectives of this research were to describe how the teacher applies flash card to teach vocabulary to the students and to find out the students’ problem in learning vocabulary through flash card at tenth grade of SMK Negeri 1 Tuhemberua in 2022/2023. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. Data were obtained from observation sheet and field notes which were then analyzed using after the lecturer used flash card by the English teacher and from interviews for tenth grade students and English teacher. The results showed that students’ problem was the type of interaction carried out during the English learning process and the students still do not have connotation and collocation as good as possible in daily life. Therefore they need good method to encourage them to study effectively. Furthermore, the influencing factors are the students still dislike learning vocabulary; they responded that they just study vocabulary when the time of English course takes place in the class.

Abstract

One of the components of speaking is pronunciation. The ability to speak is a key that someone could use the language successfully. Pronunciation is also one of the subjects in the English curriculum, especially in the English Education Study Programme Universitas Nias. However, the students still found pronouns inaccurately. The students are unable to pronounce words that have the same form in writing and do not care about how to pronounce the words accurately. They also do not know how important the accuracy of pronunciation in English is. To conduct the research, the researcher used a descriptive quantitative method by collected by giving the test to the students the using statistical method. In collecting the data researcher prepared some tongue-twister phrases to pronounce. The researcher asks the students to pronounce the phrases one by one and then record them with the recorder. the researcher concluded that most of the students in the second semester of the English Education Study Programme academic year 2023/2024 Universitas Nias are unable to pronounce tongue-twister phrases accurately. They didn’t care about pronunciation, tended to speak in a hurry, and hesitated to speak as if they were scared to make mistakes.
