Abstract

AbstrakPenelitian ini dilakukan untuk melihat kemampuan mahasiswa bahasa Inggris merespon informasi dalam mendengarkan berita bahasa Inggris. Peserta penelitian adalah mahasiswa bahasa Inggris angkatan 2011 yang telah lulus mata kuliah Listening 1 dan Listening 2. Penelitian ini berbentuk mix-method research yang melibatkan dua teknik pengumpulan data, yaitu secara kuantitatif melalui tes mendengar dan kualitatif melalui wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa bahasa Inggris memiliki kemampuan yang cukup baik dalam merespon informasi dalam mendengarkan berita bahasa Inggris, yaitu dengan nilai rata-rata 68.4. Dari hasil wawancara dapat disimpulkan bahwa kemampuan mahasiswa dipengaruhi oleh metode pengajaran yang diterapkan dosen dan banyaknya latihan.Key words: students’ability, english news.

Abstract

AbstrakKeterampilan mendengarkan adalah salah satu keterampilan yang paling mendasar bagi semua siswa di tingkat Sekolah Menengah Atas. Namun ada beberapa permasalahan yang sering kali muncul di dalam pengajaran keterampilan mendengarkan, terutama dalam mendengarkan teks News Item text, seperti terbatasnya kemampuan siswa dalam mengetahui kosakata bahasa Inggris, kurangnya pemahaman mereka dalam menggunakan tata bahasa yang baik, serta faktor ketidaknyamanan kelas yang muncul akibat perlunya pembaharuan dan kreatifitas guru dalam mengelola proses pembelajaran di dalam kelas. Agar siswa dapat memahami pesan pada keterampilan mendengarkan news item, penulis memilih giving WH Question. Teknik ini nantinya akan diterapkan di tahap whilst-teaching dengan pemakaian media news video sebagai bagian untuk mendapatkan ide dan arti pada teks news item bagi siswa tingkat Sekolah Menengah Atas. Diharapkan dengan menggunakan giving news video and WH question, guru dapat memaksimalkan kemampuan mendengarkan teks news item siswa agar tercapai tujuan pembelajaran. Penulis juga berharap agar teknik ini dapat memberikan kontribusi positif bagi guru dalam mengajarkan kemampuan mendengarkan teks news item serta bisa meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam mendengarkan teks news item.Key words: keterampilan mendengar, teks news item, WH Question, video

Abstract

AbstractListening is a skill that has to be mastered by language students because it is the basis for communication. If the students do not understand what the interlocutors are saying, the communication will not happen even though they are good in speaking. However, when learning English, most students have difficulties in listening. Based on the previous research, it is because the teacher often skips to teach listening so the students are not used to listen, strategy used by the teacher is monotonous, and the speed of the speakers, and also the students are lack of vocabulary. To solve the problem, the writer wants to apply and explain a media called Web Based Learning Resources. Web Based Learning Resources is an interactive web-based tools that support learning by enhancing, amplifying, and guiding the cognitive processes of students. It requires students to do different exercises with authentic materials, and it will give feedback soon after the students finish the exercises. The finding shows WBLR can improve students learning skill since they are used to listen to the native speakers. Key words: Listening, Teaching Listening, Web Based Learning Resources

Abstract

This paper is aimed to introduce and describe how online learning by using the website www.talkenglish.com improves student’s speaking skills. Speaking is difficult to be taught because of some factors (Jaelani and Zabidi,2020) : lack of student’s interest, lack of vocabulary, hard to focus, lack of confidence, anxiety, and fear. Considering these problems, teachers need to apply a technique in the teaching and learning process. Talk English is a website that helps people to improve their English easily. This website provides theories and practice for students in English. It relates to the availability of computers and Internet connections, using websites as online learning is possible to be done. There are 3 stages in teaching: pre-teaching activity, whilst-teaching activity, and post-teaching activity. Talk English is used in whilst-teaching activities to help students with their pronunciation. In addition, this website helps students to get the correct pronunciation of English.

Abstract

AbstractThis paper deals with the use of Cocktail Party Technique in teaching recount text for senior high school students. Cocktail Party Technique can be used by teachers in teaching recount text in order to help students improving their speaking for mastering the spoken form of recounttext. This technique is used as the solution for teachers to solve students’ problems in learning recount text. This technique encourages the students to speak in the classroom in order to improve their mastery in speaking of recount text. Cocktail Party Technique can be applied for senior high school students in Indonesia. In applying this technique, teacher needs approximately 70 minutes to take time required. It is appropriate to the grade X in senior high school which has 90 minutes for learning English language based on Indonesia Curriculum of 2013.Key words: Teaching speaking, recount text, Cocktail Party Technique.

Abstract

This paper discuss about the use of Podcast in teaching spoken narrative. Podcast can be used by the teacher to improve the student’s motivation in learning narrative especially spoken narrative text.  This media can be a solution for the teacher to solve the problem of teaching spoken narrative text. As known that the student in senior high school find some difficulties in learning narrative especially when they need to understand a too long material which is consist of some difficult words. Podcast consist of several material that can be a media for the teacher to teach spoken narrative easily. This media provide a various material including narrative to help the teacher to teach listening. Podcast can easily increase the student motivation because they can find a various material about narrative that can easily understood.

Abstract

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat tipe strategi belajar yang paling banyak digunakan oleh siswa. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana kemampuan bahasa Inggris siswa melalui strategi belajar yang mereka terapkan dalam belajar. Metode penelitian deskriptif digunakan dalam penelitian ini yang melibatkan 50 siswa kelas 8 SMP Negeri 3 Padang Panjang sebagai sumber data penelitian. Angket digunakan dalam penelitian ini untuk mengumpulkan informasi mengenai strategi belajar siswa. Data dari angket dianalisa untuk mengetahui strategi yang paling banyak digunakan siswa. Kemudian data tersebut dibandingkan dengan nilai siswa untuk melihat kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris melalui strategi yang digunakan. Hasil penelitian ini memperlihatkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa memilih metacognitive strategi sebagai strategi yang mereka gunakan dalam belajar. Selain itu, dari analisa nilai siswa, sebagian besar siswa yang mendapatkan nilai tertinggi dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris menggunakan metacognitive strategi dalam belajar. Melalui metacognitive strategi, siswa dimudahkan untuk mengevaluasi kemampuan mereka sehingga mereka dapat mengetahui apa yang harus mereka tingkatkan dan bagaimana mereka meningkatkan belajar mereka.Key Words: learning strategies, learning strategies for speaking, learning achievement

Abstract

This research was aimed at analyzing the errors made by the second year English department students in using passive voice in the Academic Writing Subject. Specifically, it was aimed at finding the types of errors and the causes of errors made by the students in their academic writings. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The sample of this research was the K3 students consisting of 19 students. The sample was taken based on the cluster sampling technique. Then, the students’ academic writings were used as the source of the data. The data collection was taken by using the theory of Surface Structure Taxonomy proposed by Dulay et al. (1982). Related to the causes of errors, the theory proposed by James and Brown was used to study the causes of errors made by the students. The findings show that there were 367 errors made by the students. The highest type of errors made by the students was 216 omission errors (59%) and followed by 104 misformation errors (28%), 34 addition errors (9%), and 13 misordering errors (4%). It was found that the major causes of errors were interlingual and intralingual factors. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the students did the four types of errors.

Abstract

Teaching process in speaking English is really difficult for some teacher in Senior High School, especially in Asking and Giving Opinion. Unparticipation from students during teaching speaking become major problem to solve. Also, the monotonous teaching speaking which focuses through theory and books make students and teacher having less interction. According to these problems, writer will use the strategy to deal with those problems. So that, students could activate their speaking ability in speakingclass, especially in Asking and Giving opinion. Strategy that writer will use is Quality Questioning Strategy. Quality Questioning Strategy is the questions selected by the teacher to stimulate students thinking outcomes in activate students’ speaking ability. The questions should be an easy questions contains several familiar vocabularies by the students. Thus, there are some rules in using this strategy as follow: Ask Question, Wait Time, No Hands- Up, dan Response. In applying Quality Questioning, teacher needs to follow those rules beacuse the process of those rules will stimulate students thinking outcomes in speaking class, especially in asking and Giving Opinion. Writer hopes that this strategy will activate students speaking ability, especially in Asking and Giving Opinion.

Abstract

This paper is aimed to discuss about the use of children English song to teach pronunciation to first year of junior high school students. It is known, Junior high school students just learn English; they may have some difficulties in the process of learning. Feeling difficult to pronounce word in English can be one of those problems. In order to solve this problem, teacher should have good solution to help their students. One of the solutions that can use by the teacher is using Children English song as the media to teach pronunciation. Teaching pronunciation through children English song help the students to be familiar with the  English pronunciation, they can also imitate how the singer’s pronounce word in English. So that, the students can makes their pronunciation better. Learning pronunciation by using song also make the students motivated to learn because it is fun and enjoyable.Key Words: Song, Pronunciation, Children English Song
