Abstract

This paper discusses a training model suitable for senior high school debaters in Indonesian context. This model is designed to address the difficulties which I have encountered in my years of training senior high school debaters and teachers in West Sumatera Province, Indonesia. One major problem which I have almost always confronted is students’ reluctance to speak despite their interest in debating. These students were afflicted with severe level of speaking anxiety which is hampering their willingness to debate. There are two reasons which prompt this high level of speaking anxiety: lack of background knowledge and language competence. Therefore, scaffolding is needed to deal with those problems. This model comprises of several steps, which are: Background Knowledge Building; Constructing Arguments For and Against a Motion; and Delivering the Arguments.MODEL PELATIHAN DEBAT BAGI PEDEBAT DI TINGKAT SMA DI DI INDONESIAAbstrakMakalah ini adalah pemaparan mengenai sebuah model pelatihan debat bahasa Inggris bagi pedebat tingkat SMA di Indonesia. Model pelatihan ini terdiri dari tiga tahapan, yaitu: Background Knowledge Building; Constructing Arguments For and Against a Motion; dan Delivering the Arguments.

Abstract

This paper discusses the importance of infusing literature classes' syllabus with creative industry-oriented competence. In general, the objective of this measure is to keep literature relevant and matter to today's generation. who grow up immersed by gadgets and technology. It is a part of an ongoing research on developing teaching material for literature classes (poetry, prose and drama) which is compatible with creative industry, a recent trend in the global economic development. It is also an effort to respond to a preliminary research finding by Delvi Wahyuni (2014). in which students believed that studying drama (a genre in literary works) is important but it is not relevant in preparing them to enter the work force once they leave college. This paper consists of three main parts. First, it examines some classical advantages associated with literature as well as the practical benefit which students can get from studying literature and how they help them in getting a niche in the job market. Second, it discusses what literature class syllabus must contain to be deemed creative-industry-oriented. Third, this paper will provide a brief review on a working example ofa success story on creative industry and literature. All in all, the strengthened syllabus is expected to result in students seeing some congruity between what they leam and what is needed in to be able to compete in the ever increasingly competitive labor force, which most of the time not the case in the traditional literature syllabus. Finally, creative industry-oriented syllabus is effective in conforming the long held notion about literature and why it must be taught that it is dulce et utile (Sweet and useful).

Abstract

Charlemagne, King of the Franks once remarked that to have another language is like to have a second soul. This remark strongly emphasizes that having a command of several languages is beneficial. For this reason, aside from the learning of the national language, foreign languages are also included in school curriculum in Indonesia. Among all of foreign languages taught at schools, it is English which attains privileged position due to its states as one of the subjects which students must pass in the national examination system known as UN along with Math, Science and Bahasa Indonesia. Its privileged position also transpires to other fields such as the job market, academic achievement, and career development. As a result, there is a growing demand for the mastery of English for it has been associated with success and higher social stand. However, aside from the benefits it boasts, this frenzy over English proficiency has a potential to be damaging to the national language and culture. It is the objective of this paper to explain the treat the English language has to offer, and the threat in store for an uncritical learning of this language. Thus, in order to maximize our exploit of English for our national interest and  to ward off the danger it poses, I propose critical language awareness as an approach in our pedagogic practice.
