Abstract

This study aims to determine the techniques used by students in paraphrasing, the level of paraphrasing ability and also the problems faced by students in paraphrasing in the academic writing class of the English Department of UNP. This research uses descriptive qualitative. The people who took part in this research activity were 126 students of the acamic writing class of the English Department of UNP for the 2019 academic year. The instruments used in this study were tests and questionnaires. In this study found The researcher can be concluded 86 students used the synonym technique, 12 students used make abstract ideas concreate, 20 students used divide long sentences and 8 students used omit any unnecessary. The score of paraphrasing test was range about 38-95. 9 students qualified in average level, 39 students qualified in good level, 67 students qualified in excellent level, and 5 students qualified in unsatisfactory

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate senior high school students’ reading habits and their reading comprehension of short story in English. There are several categories were asked to the students in order to find out their reading habits category, the amount of reading practice, the length of time having reading habits, the types of the text read, the number of books read, the number of publish writing, the respondent of their English reading habits, the EFL students’ purpose of reading English text, the motivation of the EFL students to read English and the last the belief of EFL students about reading English. Moreover, the categories tested in reading comprehension test are main idea, finding detail information, inference, reference, and vocabulary. The participants of this research were 66 of second grade students of SMAN 1 Gunung Tuleh who took English as elective course. This study employed descriptive research. The instrumentations of this research were questionnaire and reading test. The result of this research showed that students’ reading habit is strongly influences their reading ability to comprehend short story I English. Reading habit has positive impact towards the students reading comprehension. Nevertheless, it have negative impact toward students’ reading comprehension. Abstract

This study aimed to analyse the use of grammatical cohesive devices in an analytical exposition text written by eleventh grade students of MAN 2 Padang based on Halliday and Hasan’s theory (1976). Grammatical cohesive devices was used in order to write a cohesive text for helping both writer and reader. The participants of this research were 65 eleventh grade students in MAN 2 Padang. This study was descriptive qualitative research used in analysing the grammatical cohesive devices in an analytical exposition text. The instrumentations of this research were There were some instrumentations used in this research such as: writing test, table analysis and formulation. The findings of the research showed that all of the grammatical cohesive devices; reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction; used by the students in writing a text. There were 1.225 grammatical cohesive used by the students in writing an analytical exposition text. However, ellipsis and substitution were rarely used in that text.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate senior high school students’ ability in analyzing the poetic elements of poem in English and the difficulties faced by the students in analyzing the poetic elements of poem in English. The participants of this research were 19 eleventh grade students in SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP Padang who take the English subject as their elective subject. This study is descriptive research with quantitative approach. The instrumentation of this research is test. The result showed that the level mastery of the students in analyzing the poetic element of poem in English is poor. Based on the data taken, the hardest poetic element for students is onomatopoeia and the easiest is simile. And it can be concluded that students' ability in analyzing the poetic elements of poem in English is and students have difficulty in analyzing poetic elements.Key words: ability, difficulties, poetic elements

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the development of speech disfluency of Zayn Malik, ex-One Direction member, regarding his anxiety disorder issue since 2015 – 2017. The types of this research was descriptive qualitative through longitudinal analysis. Data for this research were 281 utterances from trancriptions of Zayn Malik’s speech based on ten videos taken from Youtube since 2015 until 2017. The result showed that there were 1369 types of speech disfluency. Silent pause and filled pause gave huge contribution to disrupt Zayn Malik’s speech. The most common types and the highest types of speech disfluency produced by Zayn Malik was filled pause that was 627 types or 72%. Surprisingly, Zayn Malik developed more silent pause than filled pause since the last of 2016 until the middle of 2017, and he no longer produced types of stuttering like prolongation or block since the middle of 2016. It proved that Zayn Malik is indeed a non-stuttered speaker. In relation to anxiety and speech disfluency, Zayn Malik were more anxious to speak in front of many audiences or with men interviewers because his speech disfluency increased; while it decreased when he talked to woman interviewer or a machine by seeing the result that he produced more silent pause during the interview. Hence, the best way to overcome stuttering for anxiety sufferer is by producing more silent pause during speech in order to create a good speaking performance.

Abstract

This thesis is a psychoanalysis reading of a novel which is written by Bill Clegg entitled Did You Ever Have a Family (2015). It explores the issue of grief journey which is experienced by main character before she is managed to heal from her grief. The analysis of grief journey is used the concept of Elisabeth Kubler Ross (1969) of five stages of grief. It is also intended to find out the contribution of multiple narrators in revealing the issue of grief journey. The result of this analysis shows the depiction of main character’s grief journey from multiple characters’ perspective.

Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of a novel written by Celeste Ng entitled Little Fires Everywhere (2017). This analysis looks at the commodification and alienation that is experienced by women who involved in surrogacy and adoption. This analysis employes Marxist literary theory to explain the phenomena in the novel. The analysis focuses on two issues of commodification and alienation that are proposed by Karl Marx as seen through two female protagonists which are Mia Warren and Bebe Chow. This analysis also depends a lot on the narrator to determine which parts of the novel are used as the data. The result of the study shows that Mia Warren experienced commodification of the human body and four kinds of alienation such as alienation from the product of labor, alienation from the act of production, alienation from the species being, and alienation from other people bacause she becomes a surrogate mother. The other protagonist, Bebe Chow, also experienced four kinds of alienation because her child is adopted.

Abstract

AbstractWijaya, Eko. 2020. Ecological Apocalypse in the Three Poems: We Think We Are Less Foolish, Crossing A City Highway, and Epithalamia. Thesis. English Department. Faculty of Languages and Arts. Universitas Negeri Padang.            This thesis is the analysis of the three poems: We Think We Are Less Foolish, Crossing A City Highway, and Epithalamia. It explores the issue of ecological apocalypse which is done by people toward the nature. It is also intended to know the contribution of poetic elements: imagery, irony, and speaker in revealing the issue of ecological apocalypse. This analysis is related to the concept of eco-criticism by Garrard, McKusic, Barry, and Buell that is supported by the text-based and context-based interpretation. The result of this analysis shows about ecological apocalypse is a result of human intervention. They exploit and pollute the nature continuously just for their own advantages without concern about the sustainability of nature.Key words: apocalypse, human, nature, anthropocentrism, exploitation, pollution.

Abstract

The word address term is the word person use to call or greet others. Batak Toba language has various forms of greeting words used in communicating with someone. This study aims to find out the forms of the word greetings based on kinship or family system used by Batak Toba people who live in Padang Pasir Parupuk Tabing as nomads. This study will also explain and describe the communicative function the use of greeting. The method used in this research is descriptive method that describes and process data based on facts that exist in the field. This research is focused on the forms and functions of the address terms word in Batak Toba language. Data were collected through interview with some informants and made notes. In this study, the informants are Batak Toba People who has blood relations and marriage. Data were analyzed based on the forms of address terms based on kinship system of Batak Toba. The results of research indicate that there are various address terms used by Batak Toba ethnic especially in kinship relationship based on lineage and marriage that used by Batak Toba people. Interestingly, there are several forms of greeting words that are similar to each other.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan jumlah dan mengelompokan jumlah kata pertama yang diproduksi, aturan ponologi, dan kelas kata yang paling banyak yang muncul dalam ujaran pertama bayi dalam percakapan sehari hari selama dua bulan penelitian. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kuantitatif. Metode ini digunakan untuk menghitung, mengelompokan dan menganalisis data yang didapat berdasarkan keadaan yang sebenarnya. Sumber dari penelitian ini adalah kata-kata yang memiliki arti yang muncul dalam ujaran-ujaran yang diproduksi bayi dalam percakapan sehari-hari secara natural. Data diperoleh dengan cara merekam 120 percakapan pada saat bayi berinteraksi dengan yang lain. Data tersebut kemudian dianalisis dengan teori pemerolehan bahasa pertama. Untuk menemukan kata yang diproduksi, pola ponologi, dan kelas kata yang paling banyak diproduksi.Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa selama dua bulan penelitian bayi memproduksi 87 kata dengan 37 makna sebenarnya. Didalam kata yang di produksi ini terdapat proses penghapusan, penambahan, pengulangan dan penyederhanaan kata. Penelitian ini juga menunjukan bahwa kata yang diproduksi bayi terbagi atas tiga kategori, yaitu satu kata dengan satu pola, satu kata dengan dua pola dan satu kata dengan tiga pola. Terakhir, penelitian ini juga menunjukan bahwa kelas kata yang paling banyak diproduksi bayi yaitu noun.
