Abstract

Formal music education in college, especially for piano majors, has emphasized classical repertoire and profound solo playing techniques. However, previous graduate evaluations show that many have difficulty adjusting to the demands of the popular music industry, which demands more flexibility in piano accompaniment, improvisation, and harmony. This research aims to practice the piano accompaniment learning model in grade 3 of the current major. Action research is the methodology used, and a descriptive qualitative approach is needed using document analysis, observation, and interviews. The findings of this study are expected to help music education institutions better understand their students’ business demands and professional requirements after graduation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of social media as a means of regenerating Minangkabau traditional music among the younger generation through the role of traditional music content creators. The background of this research stems from the declining interest of young people in traditional music due to the dominance of popular culture and modernization. However, the emergence of content creators who utilize digital platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram has opened new opportunities for the preservation of traditional music. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation of several Minangkabau music content creators. The results show that social media plays a crucial role in the regeneration process of traditional music through three main functions: information (promotion), interaction, and motivation. By presenting engaging visuals, combining traditional music with modern elements, and encouraging interactive audience participation, social media effectively attracts young people to learn and appreciate traditional music. In addition, regeneration is the process of inheriting cultural values through efforts to maintain the sustainability of performing arts by adapting the presentation methods and performance spaces to suit the times, so that traditional arts remain acceptable to modern society.

Abstract

Traditional performing arts play a vital role in transmitting cultural values across generations. In Siulak Mukai, Kerinci Regency, the Balahak performance serves not only as a festive tradition but also as a medium of cultural and character education. This study explores how Balahak functions as an ethnopedagogical tool within community-based art education. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through participatory observation of Balahak performances, in-depth interviews with local artists, community leaders, and participants, and analysis of related documentation. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, with triangulation techniques employed to ensure validity. Findings show that Balahak performances consist of three stages—preparation, core, and reflection—which facilitate cultural value transmission and skill regeneration. Elements such as music, poetry, symbolic roles, and inclusive participation enable informal learning rooted in local traditions. Community members of all ages engage actively, creating a dynamic space for intergenerational education.Balahak reflects key principles of ethnopedagogy by embedding cultural knowledge, social norms, and character values within an experiential and communal art form. Its structure supports cultural preservation and strengthens identity, making it a viable model for integrating indigenous knowledge into formal and non-formal art education.

Abstract

Vocal learning within the MGMP Seni Budaya SMA Kota Padang Learning Community faces significant challenges, particularly due to the limited availability of a harmonious musical instrument (keyboard) to accompany vocal exercises. Based on the data, only three keyboard units are available for all students in the vocal class, which is highly inadequate. Additionally, most students and teachers have not yet utilized digital music technology in the learning process. This community service activity aims to address these issues by providing intensive training on using the Musicca digital music platform as a flexible and independent alternative for vocal accompaniment. The methods used include socialization, practical training, technology implementation through Musicca-based vocal projects, as well as mentoring and evaluation. The expected outcomes are a measurable improvement in students' vocal skills through a digital project (targeting 80% of students showing better abilities) and the mastery of relevant digital music technology (targeting 85% of students mastering Musicca independently). The implementation of this digital platform also contributes to supporting the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program and Main Performance Indicators (IKU) through technology-based learning experiences outside of the campus. Keywords:  Vocal Learning, Digital Music Platform, Learning Community, Arts and Culture
