Abstract

Silica gel is a compound that has two active sides, namely silanol (Si-OH) and siloxane (Si-O-Si) which have not been effective as adsorbents so modifications are made. Silica gel is modified using monosodium salt 4-Amino-5-hydroxy-2,7-naphthalenedisulfonic acid which is reacted first with GPTMS (glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane) as a connecting bridge to produce sulfonate-modified silica gel-GPTMS adsorbent. The purpose of this modification is that sulfonate-modified silica gel-GPTMS are made to adsorb Ni2+ metal ions under optimum conditions at pH, contact time and concentration. The adsorption process is carried out using the batch method by seeing how much adsorbent adsorption capacity is made against the absorption of metal ions. The characterization used is an FTIR (Fourier Transform-Infrared) spectrophotometer in the analysis of the adsorbent manufacturing process and SSA (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry) to see the results of metal ion absorption. The results obtained according to research that has been conducted show the adsorption of sulfonate-modified silica gel-GPTMS against the absorption of Ni2+ metal ions at optimum conditions is at pH 3 and contact time for 45 with absorption capacities of 1.5265 mg/g and 1.5826 mg/g respectively.

Abstract

The textile industry sector in Indonesia is progressing. This progress is not followed by good and effective waste management. Methyl green dye waste is one example. Methyl green is organic waste that is difficult to decompose and is toxic. Therefore, an effective method is needed to decompose organic waste into environmentally friendly compounds using the photolysis method. This study aims to obtain the optimum time and the optimum concentration of TiO2 doping on the degradation of Methyl green by photolysis. The percentage of degradation of Methyl green was obtained from the measurement of the absorbance value using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at the maximum wavelength of Methyl green (λmax) and the maximum wavelength was obtained at 640 nm. The results are the optimum time of degradation of Methyl green dye at radiation time of 150 minutes with a degradation percentage of 97.5%. In the variation of TiO2 dopant concentration, the optimum concentration of TiO2 dopant was found at 10% ZnO-TiO2 with 95% degradation.

Abstract

Cu2+ ion is a dangerous metal ion produced from various industrial wastes that need to be addressed. Excess and high concentrasions of absorbed Cu2+ ions can disrupt health and ecosystems because they are difficult to degrade and easily accumulate in the body. This study aims to determine the optimum conditions for the absorption of Cu2+ ions using langsat fruit peel on the effect of particle size and flow rate by column method. Adsorption of Cu metal ions with langsat fruit peel biosorbent obtained optimum conditions at adsorbent particle size of 150 micrometers with adsorption capacity of 13,963 mg/g and flow rate of 1 mL/minute with adsorption capacity of 13,442 mg/g. This shows that langsat fruit peel is one of the best biosorbents in absorbing metals with large absorption capacity data.

Abstract

Used cooking oil (minyak jelantah) is a household and industrial waste product that poses environmental risks and undergoes significant quality degradation due to the breakdown of chemical compounds during repeated use. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a combination of activated carbon derived from cocoa pod husk waste and bleaching earth in improving the quality of used cooking oil. The research was conducted experimentally in the laboratory of Universitas Negeri Padang using used cooking oil obtained from local vendors. Activated carbon was prepared by calcining cocoa pod husks at 350°C for varying durations of 30, 45, 60, and 75 minutes, followed by activation with 1M NaOH solution. The purification process was carried out in stages through the addition of activated carbon and bleaching earth under controlled heating conditions. Parameters analyzed included acid number, moisture content, density, saponification value, and functional group characterization using infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results indicate that the most effective adsorbent combination was achieved with activated carbon calcined for 60 minutes, which reduced the acid number from 14.92 to 5.09 mg KOH/g, decreased moisture content to 0.11%, and increased the saponification value to 75.30 mg KOH/g. The FTIR spectrum showed reduced intensity in functional groups associated with degradation, indicating effective purification. In conclusion, the combination of activated carbon from cocoa pod husk waste and bleaching earth is proven effective in improving the physicochemical quality of used cooking oil, while also demonstrating the potential for sustainable and environmentally friendly use of agricultural waste as raw material for adsorbents.
