Abstract

Society services activity on cattle waste management system have been implemented in Sido Mulyo Livestock Farmers Group at Pulosari, Jumoyo, Salam, Magelang. Animal byproducts that consist of feces and urine of cattle wastewas processed into organic fertilizer compost and liquid fertilizer. Sido Mulyo Livestock Farmer Group has one unit of 20 m3 biodigester to accommodate the feces from approximately 30 cattle owned by the group member. Biogas has been used as a fuel source for family group members located around the cage. Slurry resulted from anaerobic digestion of biodigester disposed to pastures located on the right side of the cage. Ownership system in the groupis every group member hasa responsibility for taking care of their own cattle. The number of livestock owned by each member of the SidoMulyoLivestock Farmers Group ranged between 1 to 4 cattle. Society services methods that have been implemented was in the form of mentoring for a member of the Sido Mulyogroup. The other activities that have been implemented was the training and development of cattle industry, especially the handling of livestock waste in the form of feces, urine, and the feed residue. The activities was continued by the manufacture of compost packaging design, followed by the last series of activities such as monitoring and program development. The enthusiasm of the group members in joining to the extension activities is very good. The timing of the extension are determined in the afternoon after members of the group have finished searching feed for their cattle. The sustainability forwaste processing into organic fertilizer compost and liquid organic fertilizer becomes a major concern, because it is highly dependent on consumer demand.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of nipple dip with mengkudu extact (Morinda citrifolia) on CMT test result. Mengkudu contains anti-bacterial substances, consisting of acubin, L. asperuloside, alizarin and some antraquinon substances that have been shown to show strength against pathogenic bacteria. This study used four Friesian Holstein (FH) cows which are known for sub-clinical mastitis and nipple dyeing solution from mature noni fruit. Nipple FH dipped using 30% concentration of noni fruit extract. After dyed, a Californian mastitis test (CMT) was performed. Based on the stastistic analysis of T-Test used, extract of noni fruit significantly (p <0,01) can inhibit bacteria cause mastitis. Noni fruit extract is able to inhibit the spread of bacteria that cause mastitis, thus lowering the risk of mastitis.

Abstract

The study was conducted in 60 respondents of dairy farmers in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta from August 2020 to February 2021. The study aims to make comparison between recording in the REKS-EL version 1.0 and those in dairy farms recording, in order to improve REKS-EL features. Data of the farmer characteristics and recording components were collected by interviewed. Identification of components the dairy farmers recording was carried out using a list of questions in a table. The list contains 43 components, which were arranged based on the recording guidelines as written in the Indonesian Minister of Agriculture No. 100, 2014. The result of comparison between dairy farmers recording and REKS-EL version 1.0 feature showed differences on recording content. Software REKS-EL has more recording components than dairy farmers recording, as much as 23 vs. 13 (46% vs. 23% of total components). The REKS-EL feature showed advantages on data of pedigree, and reproduction but needs to be improved with the additional components derived from farmer records, namely daily and weekly milk production. In the REKS-EL feature also needs to be added feed data, body condition score and calf after birth.

Abstract

This study examined the correlation between the concentration of blood metabolites (triglyceride, albumin, phosphorous) on the reproductive performances (S/C and PPM) of lactating Holstein Friesian crossbred (HFC) cows. Blood samples were collected through the caudal vein 8 hours after feeding and the plasma was analyzed at the Integrated Research and Testing Laboratory of Universitas Gadjah Mada (LPPT UGM). Samples were stored at 5° C. Triglyceride, albumin, and phosphorous were measured using glucose oxidase-phenol 4-aminoantipyrine (GOD-PAP) method, photometric bromocresol green method, and cypress diagnostic, respectively. Blood metabolites data were analyzed using Pearson correlation model. The results showed that the correlation coefficients of triglycerides, albumin, and phosphorus levels on PPM and S/C were -0.521 and -0.650; -0.447 and -0.612; -0.513 and -0.700, respectively. In conclusion, there are significant negative correlation between triglyceride, albumin and phosphorus levels on the PPM, and very significant negative correlation between triglyceride, albumin and phosphorus levels on the S/C of lactating HFC cows.

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate fertility grade of Friesian Holstein cows based on milk urea levels. A number of eight cows which fulfill the criteria of not pregnant and in second to sixth lactation, produced milk of 2.5 liters/day, and body weight ranging from 400-450 kg were used in this research. The cows were given fodder that consisted of 30 kg of forage and 10 kg of a mixture of concentrate (pollard, pulp out, and molasses), in the morning and afternoon. Milk and blood samples were taken once a week for five weeks in the morning before fed. Milk urea levels were measured using the urea FS (DiaSys) and blood samples were tested using enzyme linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA) with the progesterone hormone kit (DRG, Germany). The variables measured were pregnancy rate, service per conception (S/C), days open, and progesterone levels. Reproduction and milk urea levels data were analyzed by linear regression to determine the relationship between two variables. Progesterone data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the average calving interval, days open, and S/C were 607.5±170.27 days; 341.25±187.65 days; and 2.41±2.32 days, respectively. The average of milk urea levels was 14.16±2.55 mg/dL. Regression analysis showed a significant effect (P0.05) and negative correlation between milk urea level and S/C. The average of non-pregnant progesterone hormone level was 12.04±7.13 ng/mL. In conclusion, the fertility grade of Friesian Holstein cows decreased when the milk urea level at 14.16 mg/dL and non-pregnant progesterone at 12.04±7.13 ng/mL.

Abstract

Cheese coagulants from plant origin have emerged as promising alternatives to animal rennet in cheese production. Among them, latex from Ficus carica L. has shown potential as a natural milk-clotting agent for goat cheese production. This study aims to determine the optimal incubation time and fig tree latex extract concentration on the quality of goat cheese. The optimization of the production process of the goat cheese was carried out using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with Central Composite Design (CCD). The independent variables were the concentration of the Ficus carica L. latex extract (0.2-0.5 mL/100 mL of milk) and the time of incubation (60-120 min). The goal was to achieve maximum protein content (%), ash content (%), and calcium content (%). The results of this study showed that the Ficus carica L. latex extract used in the study could coagulate milk with a strength of 354.69 MCU and a dominant protein molecular weight of about 20 kDa. The optimization results using RSM method with CCD design showed that the goat cheese was produced optimally in 0.5 mL/100 mL of milk for the concentration of Ficus carica L. latex extract, with 120 min incubation time. These optimal conditions resulted in a cheese with protein content of 18.56%, ash content of 2.32%, calcium content of 803.93 mg/100g, and desirability level of 0.93.
