Abstract

This article, entitled “The Interpreting Method,” aims to highlight the role of oral interpreting as a pedagogical approach in teaching Arabic as a foreign language within Islamic educational institutions, rather than viewing it merely as a tool for transferring messages between two languages. The study departs from the observation that Arabic curricula are still largely grammar and text oriented, with insufficient attention given to oral communicative skills, particularly interpreting. It seeks to identify the main principles of the interpreting method (fidelity of meaning, speed with accuracy, and contextual–communicative orientation), to outline its key techniques (simultaneous, consecutive, whispered interpreting, and keyword-based interpreting), to analyse the concept of equivalence in its semantic, functional, cultural, and pragmatic dimensions, and to show how these elements can be mobilized to develop learners’ communicative competence. A qualitative descriptive design was adopted, combining classroom observations in selected Islamic institutions, a systematic review of relevant literature, and semi-structured interviews with teachers of Arabic as a foreign language, followed by thematic analysis of the data. The findings indicate that structured training in interpreting enhances listening and speaking skills, rapid cognitive processing, and intercultural sensitivity, and functions as a bridge between receptive and productive abilities while supporting task-based learning in the classroom. The study contributes by conceptualizing interpreting as an integrated teaching method in Arabic curricula at Islamic institutions and by proposing practical avenues for its inclusion in course design and teacher-training programmes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and synthesize classical and modern phonological thought in the study of Arabic sounds through a comparative study between Al-Khalīl ibn Aḥmad and Noam Chomsky's generative phonological theory. The classical Arabic phonological tradition pioneered by Al-Khalīl through Kitāb al-‘Ayn provides a strong descriptive-empirical basis for the Arabic sound system, especially through the concepts of makhārij al-ḥurūf, ṣifāt al-ḥurūf, and i‘tilāf al-ḥurūf. Meanwhile, the generative phonological theory developed by Chomsky and Morris Halle offers a cognitive-theoretical approach by emphasizing abstract representation, transformation rules, and distinctive features in sound processing. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature study design, through content analysis and a comparative approach to primary and secondary literature. The results of this study indicate that both approaches share common ground in viewing language as an ordered system, but differ in their epistemological orientation: classical phonology starts from articulatory observations, while generative phonology emphasizes the speaker's mental system. The synthesis of the two produces an integrative phonological model capable of explaining Arabic sound phenomena from both physiological and cognitive perspectives. This study is expected to enrich the development of contemporary Arabic phonological theory and open up opportunities for more comprehensive further research.

Abstract

Childfree in marriage is a contemporary social phenomenon that raises normative debates in the family law system both in the perspective of Islamic law and Indonesian civil law, the decision not to have children is often understood as part of individual freedom and reproductive rights, in other contexts marriage as a legal institution has goals, social functions, and public dimensions that are not fully subject to the private will of the parties. This study aims to analyze and compare the legal status of childfree in marriage, through the formulation of problems regarding: what is the legal status of childfree decisions in marriage jurisprudence according to maqāṣīd al-Syarī’ah, how is the regulation of childfree agreements in family law and what are the meeting points and differences in principles between marriage jurisprudence and civil law related to childfree using normative theological and normative juridical approaches in comparative legal research, analyzed through deductive reasoning and legal syllogism based on maqāṣid shari’ah, prenuptial agreements, and human rights restrictions. The results of this study indicate that, from an Islamic legal perspective, temporary childfree is tolerated as long as it does not negate the right to freedom, while permanent childfree contradicts the purpose of marriage. In Indonesian civil law, prenuptial agreements are not absolute, as they are limited by public order, morality, and the institutional purpose of marriage. The point of agreement between the two lies in the recognition that freedom in marriage is not absolute, but rather limited by social values and institutional goals. The difference is that marital fiqh places offspring as a normative goal that is darūrī, while civil law emphasizes the autonomy of the parties, which is limited by positive law. Thus, reproductive rights in marriage are relational and have normative limits. This research is expected to provide a conceptual contribution in the development of maqāṣid al-Syarī'ah that remains oriented towards the darūrī objectives of sharia. This research is expected to strengthen the integration of Islamic, civil, and human rights law analysis in contemporary marital law studies.

Abstract

Although digital technology has brought major changes to global education, studies that specifically address comparisons of the effectiveness and integration strategies of traditional and digital visual media across geographic contexts with limited infrastructure remain very limited. This study aimed to provide an in-depth analysis of the comparison between traditional and digital visual media, covering their advantages, inherent limitations, and implications for use in both general education and Islamic education settings. The study employed a descriptive-comparative qualitative approach with a literature review design, conducting a systematic analysis of diverse primary and secondary literature published over the past ten years. Data were collected through rigorous literature identification and document classification and were analyzed using a descriptive-comparative method to comprehensively synthesize findings from prior studies. The results showed that traditional visual media remain highly relevant for supporting direct interaction, value internalization, and character formation, whereas digital visual media are superior in enhancing learning motivation and the effectiveness of content delivery through dynamic visualization and high interactivity. In addition, the study identified the risks of technological dependence and declining interest in reading physical books as critical anomalies associated with the use of digital media. These findings contributed substantially to the development of instructional media theory through the formulation of a Hybrid-Visual integration model grounded in Dual Coding Theory. The study concludes that synergy between traditional and digital visual media is essential for holistic learning and suggests that educators develop digital literacy without abandoning a personal and humanistic approach. The implications include recommendations for educational institutions to continue facilitating conventional media use to support affective depth while expanding digital infrastructure that is adaptive to the needs of the digital generation.
